EU-India collaboration in the SME sector Turning environmental challenges into opportunities 22 July 2010, New Delhi
Agenda 1. small companies, Big Impact: EU SMEs ever increasing role in innovation & tackling climate change 2. Joining hands to reap the opportunities that climate change presents building partnerships between Indian & EU SMEs 3. European Business and Technology Centre: Supporting Indian & EU SMEs to boost EU India trade in climate-friendly technologies
1. small companies, Big Impact: EU SMEs ever increasing role in innovation & tackling climate change
small companies, Big Impact Europe s SMEs Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises are the backbone of EU s economy 99% of all European businesses are SMEs EU s 23 million SMEs contribute to about half of EU s GDP and provide jobs for almost 90 million Europeans (two thirds of private sector jobs)
small companies, Big Impact SMEs expected to drive the next wave of globalization The economic crisis is barely over: EU s SMEs are picking themselves up, dusting themselves down and getting set for a new phase of expansion outside the EU EU s SMEs have been traditionally slow at responding to globalization, yet the turbulence of recent years has made them more agile to succeed in foreign markets Ample opportunities for SMEs to develop into global organizations which cater to the needs of the MNCs across all locations
small companies, Big Impact SMEs: the seed bed of innovation SMEs are the driving force behind a large number of technological innovations SMEs are generally more flexible, more agile and are better positioned to develop and implement new ideas Their ability to exploit new technologies, and to respond quickly to changing market needs, give SMEs a pivotal role in the success of the European economy Product innovations enable SME to sail through the competitive environment not only in the European, but also in international markets
small companies, Big Impact Go Green - Go Profitable A strategic mantra for growth SMEs can play a key role in tackling climate change: through developing sustainable products and services & deploying low carbon and energyefficient technologies Especially in climate-change related sectors, EU SMEs are the creators and key suppliers of innovative products, processes and technologies Business and R&D: Using environmental challenges as a platform to drive innovation Würth Solar, a small German manufacturer of photovoltaic cells, is working on thin-film PV cells, achieving record efficiency for thin-film solar cells of 20.1%. Nanotechnology researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems have invented a new kind of cell that has a much lower efficiency rate but on the other hand, is simply a layer of dye which - in combination with some nano particles printed on the circuit produces electricity.
2. Joining hands to reap the opportunities that climate change presents - building partnerships between Indian & EU SMEs
EU India collaboration: Reaping the opportunities that climate change presents Huge untapped potential for expanding trade & investment between Indian and EU SMEs, especially in four key sectors: Energy, Environment, Biotech and Transport. India is blessed with resources to exploit developments in clean energy; India has the scientists, engineers and the capacity to deliver. Opportunities for Indian SMEs: Joint ventures to commercialize EU green technology solutions in the Indian market Joint project development Manufacturing/ licensing agreements Joint product development/ technical cooperation
EU India collaboration: In the SME sector by no means a no brainer Entering a large, diverse and exotic market such as India can be particularly daunting for SMEs less resources and time to recognize possible ways to start new successful collaborations and surpass possible obstacles Similarly for Indian companies: sourcing technologies from the EU and finding the right commercial- or project partner can be a challenging and time-consuming task Active support is needed to promote partnerships between EU and Indian SMEs
3. European Business and Technology Centre: Supporting Indian & EU SMEs to boost EU India trade in climatefriendly technologies
EBTC A catalyst for EU-India trade EU- India trade needs a boost! In 2009, Exports from the EU 27 to India fell by 16 % to 24.5 billion.
