Hi and welcome back to The Secret to. I m Jackie Hernandez, founder of School of Decorating and creator of Define Your Style Lab. I m so glad to be back here with you. Today, we re going to talk about shopping for furniture and home decor. My mission is to help you cut out the buyer s remorse and trips back to the store to make returns. I want to show you how to find the right items the first time. Click here to watch this video. In Video #1, we talked about making better decorating decisions to help you get over the fear and selfdoubt that keep you stuck in your home. I also shared how those decision-making strategies will help you regain confidence in your choices so you can move forward in your home. If you haven t seen that video, go back and watch it now, then come back to this one. In this video, I m going to build on what we ve already learned by talking about how to make better decisions when your buying furniture and home decor. You ll learn my filtering strategy that helps eliminate the wrong options before you even start shopping. This will break you free from choice overload and the risk of choosing the wrong thing. It will help you get back on track towards a home filled only with things you love, that reflect your personality, and it ll put the fun back in shopping for furniture and home decor. We have a lot to cover today so be sure to have your workbook ready and take notes as you follow along. The truth is shopping for home decor and furniture can be pretty frustrating sometimes. It s maddening to find something you think you like at the store only to realize it s all wrong when you get it home. So then you have to run back to the store and return it or suck it up as a loss and add it to the donation pile. Does this sound familiar? You ve gotten so terrified of buying the wrong thing that you either don t buy anything or settle for something cheap so that at least if it s wrong, it wasn t an expensive mistake. The problem is all those cheap mistakes add up and clutter your home with things you don t love. And just think about how much time you waste at the store debating - to buy or not to buy. Maybe you 2017 SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 1

tend to overthink at the store and end up going home without anything because you just don t have a plan. Or how about this...how many times have you gone to the store to find something simple like a vase and thought is this too modern? too rustic? too neutral? Too colorful? Too farmhouse? Ugh! And so you leave with nothing.and you re more confused than ever about what you re looking for. Sometimes you just get something out of desperation and convince yourself it ll work. Only to dispose of it a year later when you finally realize or admit to yourself it wasn t right. If you ve ever experienced any of those scenarios, you re totally normal. Even so you can t let those let downs and frustrations stand in your way of being happy in your home. When you constantly go shopping, browsing aimlessly without a plan, and come out of the store with nothing or settle for the cheapest option you can find, you ll never be satisfied. You prevent yourself from feeling happy and excited when you shop for your home. And you ll never get that finished look that you can be proud of. That s why in this video I want to get super practical and talk about eliminating choice overload and indecision when you re shopping, so you can find the right things for your home. Here s the deal We make shopping more complicated than it needs to be. We all suffer from the I llknow-it-when-i-see-it syndrome. We think the perfect piece is going to jump out at us. So we start the shopping process by browsing. We wander the stores and scroll and scroll online, just hoping to spot the right thing. And right from the get go, we ve made it much harder on ourselves. There are just too many options. Since everyone has different style preferences, retailers have to offer a wide selection to please all buyers. But that puts us browsers at an immediate disadvantage. How do you pick the right thing for your home amongst so many options? It s just too much to consider. You end up wasting a lot of time looking at a bunch of things you don t want. When you can t decide or get overwhelmed by all the choices, it feels like it would be easier to put up with 2017 SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 2

the sofa you hate, than to deal with the pressure of picking out a new one. But it doesn t have to be that way. This shopping filter strategy I m about to share with you is going to change your shopping process by helping you narrow down the options before you even set foot in a store or hop online. This strategy might seem to take more time at first, but in the long run it will save you a ton of time by eliminating a lot of that browsing time so you can find what you want for your home faster. Whether you re shopping online or in store, there s a five step filtering process you should go through for each purchase. It doesn t matter if you re shopping for something minor like a pair of candlesticks or something major like a big piece of furniture. Of course, the amount of time you spend working through these steps might vary depending on what you re shopping for, but you shouldn t skip any of them. These five filters are designed to help you get clear on what you really want, so you can eliminate the overwhelm and find the right pieces for your home. I developed this shopping filter strategy when I was shopping for clients. Remember, I designed over 150 rooms in one year. That means I sourced over 3000 furniture and home decor pieces in that same year all while trying to meet my clients needs and wants. So I learned a thing or two about streamlining the search, eliminating the option overload, and making sure I found the right fit for their style. It was so effective, that I quickly adopted this method for my own home shopping and I want to share it with you today. I want to teach you how to shop like a designer. The five steps in the shopping filter strategy help you get clear on what exactly you re shopping for. The steps help you define your requirements for the ideal piece. Now I know, Requirements is a big scary word. But what you re really doing is describing what you want and making a wish list. Then during the buying process you can use your requirements as a checklist to make sure you ve found the right piece. Each of these steps we re going to go through can be used as filters when you re shopping online. If you re shopping in person, I highly recommend pre-shopping online, if possible, to narrow down your options. Then go to see your final selections in the store. If you re going to a furniture showroom, share your 2017 SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 3

requirements with the salesperson. There s no need to walk around the entire showroom, the salesperson will know their inventory well enough to point out the furniture that fits your description. Alright, Let s dive into the five steps. Each one of these is designed to filter down what you want, so shopping for it later is easier. You re going to work through each of these steps before you even think about going shopping. Step 1. Describe what you re looking for and what it needs to do. The first thing you need to do is be able to describe what you re looking for as specifically as possible. Now, I m not talking about what the item looks like we ll get to that in a minute. In Step 1, you re only concerned with what the item IS and DOES. What purpose will it serve in your home? If you re shopping for a dining table, how many people does it need to sit? And does it need to expand for entertaining? Or maybe it needs to be round to fit in a tight space. If you re looking for a new media cabinet, does it need to hold speakers and AV equipment? Or do you need it to do double duty as toy storage? If you re on the hunt for new chairs for your living room, think through how they will be used. Do you need them to swivel so they can be used for a conversation area but turn around easily for watching TV? Or maybe you want a recliner. The point here is to think through what you need from the item. It doesn t matter how stylish you re furniture or decor is, if it it doesn t meet your needs. Now, not everything in your home has to be functional. I would argue all of your furniture probably should be, but it s a different story for home decor and accessories. Their only purpose might be to be beautiful, which is fine. But you should still define that purpose and how the object you re looking for will fulfill it. For example, if you re looking for artwork to go above your mantel, think about what feeling you want it to create in the room. If you re looking for items to decorate a shelf, think about what story you want the objects to tell SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 4

Step 2. Determine the ideal size, shape, and scale. This is a big one! Many buying mistakes are a result of the item being the wrong size when you get it home. The first thing to remember is furniture looks SMALLER in the store or showroom. When you get it home it will almost always be surprisingly BIG. When we bought our bedroom set, I didn t really consider the size. The dresser looked like a standard 6 drawer dresser and the nightstands seemed like a normal size, if there is such a thing. When they got delivered, I realized how big they really were. What looked normal in the store, felt oversized in our bedroom. We ve since moved and have a larger room where they fit right in. But I definitely learned my lesson about taking a full set of measurements before ordering furniture. Before shopping, you should always measure first to determine the right size for your space. You can also tape off the size of the furniture in your room, stack boxes up to approximate the size, or move in a similarly sized piece of furniture. The other thing you have to decide is shape. Do you want a round, rectangle, or oval dining table? Do you want a sofa or an L-shaped sectional? The ideal shape is going to be based on what the room can accommodate and the purpose of the piece, like we discussed in Step 1. Size and scale are also an important consideration for home decor. BUT the reverse is usually true here. Home decor and accessories seem like a good size at the store, but then look TINY once you get them home. I almost always recommend buying the largest size accessories available. You know when a store has the same vase in three different sizes? Get the biggest one. Unless you re specifically looking for something to fit in a tight space. It s true, the biggest size will cost more, but you ll need fewer big items to fill the same amount of space. Larger decorative items also don t lead to a cluttered look, like when you try to use a gazillion small items to fill up a shelf. So before you go shopping, figure out how BIG you can go for accessories. Knowing the size you re looking for can be really helpful for online shopping where you can filter by size. Usually when searching you can set the dimensions of a rug, length of a sofa, stool height, or choose your bedding size. This will help you focus in on the right options. There s nothing worse than spotting the perfect rug, only to realize the largest size is a 5x7 when you need a 9x12. Do yourself a favor and limit your search to just the rugs that come in a 9x12 size SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 5

Step 3. Choose an ideal color or finish. If you follow my other teachings on color, you ll know that I recommend repeating colors throughout your home to create continuity. Within the same room I recommend repeating key accent colors, wood finishes, and metal tones at least three times each. When choosing a target color or finish, think about the other colors and finishes already present in the room. Which ones do you want to multiply? Maybe there s a color you need to repeat more? Or perhaps there s a new color you want to introduce to the room? Knowing what colors or finishes you re looking for will help you focus in on the right options and avoid settling for the wrong color. In store, you can visually scan the store for items that are your ideal color or finish, and skip right past the pieces that aren t. Online, you can use colors and finishes as filters to narrow down your search. You can do this first, by only shopping sites that you know carry the types of colors and finishes you re looking for. For example, if you want a something in a bold color, you might opt to shop Target or Crate and Barrel instead of Pottery Barn. If you re looking for distressed wood furniture, then Pottery Barn and World Market might be good places to look first. Second, you can use color and finish to narrow down the options on each website. If you have you re heart set on a white dining table, then set the search filters so you only look at white dining tables. If you want a blue rug, then only look at blue rugs. Step 4. Set your budget. It s important to know what you re willing to spend before you go shopping. Then if you re shopping in store, always look at the price tag LAST. We are too conditioned to like something more when it s on sale or the price is attractive. Instead, I want you to decide first if the piece matches all the other requirements you re looking for SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 6

If it doesn t, don t even bother looking at the price. If it does match what you re looking for, then you re clear to check the price tag If it s on or under budget obviously it s a go. Now If it s over budget that doesn t necessarily mean you should walk away. You might want to consider saving up for it or adjusting your budget for other items in the room. Here s why: If you ve found something you love that meets all of your criteria, it s often worth a splurge because you know it will be something you love for many years. Splurging on one item you love, is far better than buying 10 things on sale that you don t really like. Now for online shopping, I have a completely different recommendation. I want you to use price up front as a filter. There are way too many options online and it doesn t serve you to look at a million things out of your budget. Instead, if your budget for a dining table is under a $1000, then use the filters on the websites you re shopping to see only options under $1,000. Ideally, you ll find what you re looking for, but realize with budget limitations you may have to shop more sites to find it at the right price point. If you absolutely can t find something that matches all of your criteria, then you can expand your search. Change the pricing filters by a reasonable amount, so you can see the options that are only slightly over budget. Again, it may be worth a splurge to get exactly what you want vs. settling for something you don t like. And usually you can sign up for the retailers mailing list to get coupons or free shipping offers that might bring the piece back into budget. It s also wise to check if any other retailers carry the exact same piece at a lower price or with free shipping. That happened to me recently when I ordered a new bed for my son. I noticed the manufacturer s name in the product description of the site I was on, so I googled it and found the same exact bed on Amazon Prime for less and with free shipping. And I got it in two days. Step 5. Pick a style. Last, but certainly not least, you have to consider the style of the piece. One of the most powerful filters you can use in this pre-shopping process, is the style filter. It s also the one decision you don t have to re-make every time you re planning to shop. You can figure out your decorating style ahead of time and 2017 SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 7

simplify the shopping process from this point forward. Knowing your style can even help you with some of the other filtering steps, like picking the right furniture type, scale, and color. Here s why your decorating style matters: If you aren t sure what your decorating style is, you re more likely to choose things that don t go well together or look good with the other pieces you already have. Even if you find something that meets all of your other requirements, if you get the style of the piece wrong, it will feel off. Of course, it s not as simple as picking the same style for everything in your home. I actually believe we each prefer our own unique mix of styles, and we have different style preferences for different layers of our homes. One of the things I teach is how to mix and match styles across different layers of a room. So not only do you need to know what styles you like, but you need to know which style is right for the layer of the room you re working on. While you might love a farmhouse table, you might not want farmhouse style decor, and that s okay. It s good to combine different styles together throughout your home, but to do it well you have to know where you want to use each style element. You also have to know which styles to avoid. I call them style no-nos. We all appreciate many styles, but there are only a select few we actually want to live with. It s important to know which styles are right for your home, and which ones are nice, but not for you. Whether you re shopping for a table or a vase, how do you know whether to choose a bright color or a neutral? Something traditional or transitional? Ornate or simple? The answer lies in your personal decorating style. Being able to filter out the bad options, the ones you ll probably regret later, is infinitely easier when you know you re decorating style. It gives you all the answers for what to filter on. Here s the catch though: You ll have to make a series of decisions to define your style But the result will be a guide you can follow to pull your home together. It s like pre-making all the toughest decisions in advance. Then all you have 2017 SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 8

to do is stick to the plan. You ll know what colors, shapes, and styles to use as your filter when you re shopping for your home, or even when you re looking for ideas or asking for decorating advice. It simplifies everything. Style clarity will give you the confidence in every future decorating decision, because you ll have a template to check your options against. A guide that will keep you on track to create a home you love. Now, one way, which I don t recommend, to find your style is through trial and error. Most people eventually start to figure it out, but at what cost? Years of living in a home that doesn t feel like you and thousands of dollars wasted on mistakes, not to mention the extra cost to replace all those items once you do figure out your style. The other way is to take a step back and spend a little time defining your style. Really getting clear on what you like and what you don t like for every aspect of your home before you risk another penny on home decor or furniture. I know that sounds easier said than done. It s true...finding your style is going to take a little upfront work and there s no getting around the decision-making process. But taking the time to figure out your decorating style will eliminate hundreds if not thousands of future decisions, plus it will help you keep your home cohesive. If you re sitting there thinking this is all great Jackie, but HOW do i figure out my style? Have no fear! In the next video I m going to share with you the quickest way to get style clarity so you can finally create a home that reflects you and your family. If you re not sure what your style is or how to combine a bunch of different styles that you like, this is going to be a game-changer for you! And if you re worried about how to combine styles with your significant other, I ve got something to help with that too! I ve got a solution to help you make all those decisions to pinpoint your true style. And once you ve made them, all future decorating decisions will be that much easier. You won t be questioning your style every time you go to the store or try to pick out something new for your home. If you suffer from analysis paralysis, My method is just sneaky enough to help you make all those style decisions without you even knowing it, so you won t get overwhelmed or start second-guessing your choices. More on that in the next video SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 9

Now I know this shopping filter strategy that we covered today might seem like a cumbersome process, especially for small home decor items, but I promise if you follow this filtering strategy for everything you buy for your home, not only will the shopping process go faster, but you re more likely to be satisfied with what you buy. If you can sit down and write out the specific requirements for the ideal piece, the search will be so much easier and you ll know once you ve found the right piece. Okay, so now that you ve learned all about the shopping filter strategy, let s see how this strategy combined with decorating style clarity has helped others. Once I was able to hone in on my likes and dislikes shopping for decor for my house became a lot less guilt-ridden. What I mean by that is in the past I would go out shopping and I would just buy things based on if I liked them, if they were on sale, if they were awesome or not, and then many times they would end up in the garage sale pile. But not anymore! - Lesley Clavijo Now I feel like I have more confidence when I m making choices about furniture or lighting or things like that because I have this template that I can compare everything up against and make sure it really fits into what I ve found that my style is and what will work for our family. I m making a lot less trips to the store to return things, and I love that. And I actually can have confidence and I enjoy the decorating process because I feel like I have more of a structure to it and I know what I m doing. - Abby Lawson Before I knew what my style was, I would decorate with things that didn t go together and I would decorate with things that I didn t really appreciate or that I didn t really love for the house. My home just felt like it wasn t complete. Now that I know my style, decorating is a lot easier because I can go shopping, and I can have ideas, with a filter. It s like I have this new toolkit and I m able to use that when I go out, when I decide what I want to buy and what changes 2017 SCHOOL OF DECORATING ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PAGE 10

I want to make to the house. And that helps me so much, because instead of wasting time buying something that I really don t need or that I don t like, I get stuff that I really can use. - Jackie Biederman Before I knew my style, I would wander around stores and not knowing exactly what I was looking for, not knowing what my style was, I would buy things that I loved but wouldn t necessarily fit with everything else I had or I wouldn t know what to do with it once I got it home. I didn t have a plan. It just wasn t...things I bought weren t cohesive. Now that I know my style, I have a plan. So going into the store I know exactly what I m looking for and it just makes shopping more easy and efficient. I have to do less returns. Having a plan makes everything go much more smoothly. It has simplified my life, and I love simple. - Rebecca Levander They re enjoying the decorating process now and feel like they have a plan. Pretty cool right? Let s do a quick review of what we learned today. Before you start browsing or shopping for furniture or home decor you should put together a wish list for the perfect piece. First, describe what the item is and what you need it to do. Second, determine the ideal size, shape, and scale. Third, choose an ideal color or finish. Fourth, set your budget. Fifth, pick a style for the piece that will work well with your decorating style. If you re not sure what your decorating style is, then make sure you don t miss the next video. We covered a lot today, so be sure to review your notes and try to take action right away. Make sure you use these methods on the next thing you source for your home.
