3 Recording Audio into Logic Pro 1. Launch Logic Pro X. Select New Empty Project from the menu. If you have an existing project, click the + New Tracks button at the top left of the arrange window to add a track. Select Audio as the track type and enter the number of tracks that you want to create at the bottom. If you plan to plug your mic into an input other than Input 1 on the interface, change the input setting accordingly. Click Create. 2. Before you proceed be sure to name and save your project. If you have a fast (USB3, Firewire, or Thunderbolt) external hard drive you should attach it and save your project there. If not, save to the desktop and copy the project folder to your external drive or cloud storage after you are inished working. 3. Make sure the PreSonus interface is set as the Audio Input and Output device. From the menu bar, Logic Pro X > Preferences > Audio > Output Device: PreSonus FireStudio Input Device: PreSonus FireStudio 4. Leave the monitor speakers off. The power switch is on the back left of each speaker 5. Set up the microphone securely on a stand. Connect the microphone with an XLR cable to Input 1 on the front of the PreSonus interface. 6. If the microphone requires 48V Phantom Power press the 48V button located above the input gain knob for that input. The AKG C214 & C4000, and Shure SM81 require Phantom Power. The Shure SM7B and other dynamic mics do not.
4 7. In Logic Pro ind the audio track that you created and click the R button to arm the track for recording. It s also a good idea to give your track a more descriptive name before recording. Double clicking on the name in the track header to rename it : 8. If it isn t already open, open the Mixer by clicking the mixer icon on Logic s main window: 9. Make sure your headphones are connected to the PreSonus interface headphone output and set the headphone volume about half way up. Slowly turn up the Input Gain on the PreSonus interface and audition your performance into the microphone. You should see the meters on the track s channel strip react. Set the gain so that the meter jumps to near the 9dB position at the loudest part of your performance but never hits the red at 0dB. You should hear the input audio through your headphones 10. When you are satis ied with your levels, press the Record button, or the R key to start recording audio. The playhead may do a pre roll, then Press the spacebar to stop. You should see waveforms of the audio you recorded on the track: 11. To add an overdub create a new audio track using the + button on the top left of the Arrange Window, then follow the same steps to record a new audio track.
5 Using the Axiom Keyboard to Control Software Instruments in Logic Pro: 1. Logic Pro should automatically detect the Axiom keyboard. A message may pop up saying that the MIDI keyboard has been detected. 2. Create a software instrument track: the New Tracks window will automatically pop up when you create a new project, or click the + button at the top left of the arrange window. Select Software Instrument as the track type and enter the number of tracks you want to create. Leave the Output to Output 1 2 and Open Library checked. Click Create. 3. The Software Instrument Library should open on the left hand side of the Logic Pro window. Select an instrument and trying playing a few notes on the Axiom Keyboard. You should hear audio of the instrument as you hit the keys.
6 4. Be sure to save and name your project before recording. To record with this instrument as a MIDI track, make sure the track is armed for recording by clicking the red R button next to the track name. 5. Click the Record button or R key to begin recording. Press the spacebar to stop. You should see the notes you played recorded as MIDI data on the track. Bouncing a mix: 1. On the main timing LED bar make sure that your project end time is set properly to match the last measure of your project. You can double click and type in a measure, or ind the project end marker and drag it to match the end of your song. 2. Make sure the Toolbar is open, and click the bounce icon. You can use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+B or go to File > Bounce > Project or Section 3. In the Bounce menu, select the format(s) you want to export. Select WAVE or AIFF at 24 bits to create a full quality uncompressed ile. Select MP3 to create a smaller compressed ile for sharing via or the web. Leaving Normalize on will make your mix as loud as possible in your bounced ile without clipping this is best for playing back a inal output mix. Click OK and save your ile with a descriptive name.
