The Jig is Up 2:47 (trad) These two untitled dance tunes from Placentia Bay are among the many things that Frank learned from his mother, Mrs. Bridget Maher, who learned them from the famous accordion player, ~rs. Betsy Hawco. 2. Clyde Wells' Dream & The Meech Lake Breakdown 4:16 (E. Benoit) Two reels by the great Newfoundland fiddler, Emile Benoit ( ). A musical comment, perhaps, on Canada's failure to agree on a constitution. 3. How Swede it Is 3:50 (trad) Two Swedish polskas (not to be confused with polkas), which were captured and brought to Newfoundland by Kelly during a 1981 tour of Sweden. 4. ~I Carite 2:46 (trad) A. happy waltz tune from Venezuela, learned from an album called "Flute Music of the Andes" (Olympic Records ), musicians unknown. "El Carite" is Spanish for "little darling". 5. Skipper Sydney's Pussycat 3:44 (trad) The first two tunes in this medley, "Sydney Pi.ttman's Tune" and "Skipper lost his Guernsey", were learned from another great Newfoundland fiddler, Rufus Guinchard ( ). The third, "Pussycat Up in the Plum Tree', is well known wherever plum. trees grow. 6. Father's Jig 3:50 (trad) Appropriately named by Rufus Guinchard, who learned this rather unique tune from his father. But, where did his father get it? It's played here both as a slow air and as a jig. 7. Waiting for Supper 6:40 (Morgan/Walsh/Russell) Three original tunes: The first, by George, is called "Fire" and was inspired by The Great Harvey Road Fire of 1892 (Nero and his fiddle spring to mind). It's followed by "Waiting for Supper" by Don (inspired by his hunger) and "A Brew of Tea" by Kelly (inspired by his thirst).. 8. Bridget & The Breton 3:00 ( 0 'CaTolanltrad) "Bridget Cruise" was composed by the Irish harper, Turlough O'Carolan. The Breton tune arrived here with Gilles Valentin, a visiting musician from Brittany, France, who said it was a drinking song. Cheers!

3 9. Velvet in the Wind 4:47 (E. Benoitltrad) Voici une autre composition du Franco-Terreneuvien, Emile Benoit, "Le Velours dans le Vent". The international flavour continues with another Swedish polska, title unknown. 10. Free Payne 3:06 (trad). Two more jigs from Rufus Guinchard who, in tum, learned them from Freeman Payne, a fiddler from Daniel's Harbour, Newfoundland. They are known as Free Payne's and Free Payne's Two (or was that Too). 11. The Ships are Sailing 3:15 (trad) The jig is up. Our ships sail to the fishing grounds no more.
