An EZ Jam Sessions Cheat Sheet Blues Scales Below you will find every scale position you need for the scales used in this jam session series. If and when we introduce a new scale that doesn't follow the cheat sheets provided below, will will provide you with an additional cheat sheet. Points To Remember: This one is a little different, but we wanted to show you the more official look of each blues scale. Keep in mind that all you're really doing is: Adding a b3 to the Pentatonic Major scale OR - Adding a b5 to the Pentatonic Minor scale You'll start noticing something very obvious. The blue notes are always found on a fret-by-fret run. There will always be 3 notes in a row on the same string, and these 3 notes will have no space between them. Scale Pattern Template (Red and Blue Dots) These are the only scale patterns you need for what we're calling the minor Blues scales.
Again, the above scale pattern diagram is based on the Pentatonic Minor scale with an added b5. This will work for every minor Blues scale you see. If you need a scale pattern template for the Major Blues scale patterns, you'll want to use the Pentatonic Major scale and add a b3 to it, like this: A(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in A(m) Blues: A, C, D, D#, E, G Added Note from A Pent. Minor = D# (b5)
A Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in A Blues: A, B, C, C#, E, F# Added Note from A Pent. Major = C (b3) A#(m)/Bbm Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in A#(m)/Bbm Blues: A#, C#, D#, E, F, G# Added Note from A#(m)/Bb(m) Pent. Minor = E (b5) A#/Bb Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in A#/Bb Blues: A#, C, C#, D, F, G Added Note from A#/Bb Pent. Major = C# (b3)
B(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in B(m) Blues: B, D, E, F, F#, A Added Note from B Pent. Minor = F (b5) B Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in B Blues: B, C#, D, D#, F#, G# Added Note from B Pent. Major = D (b3) C(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in C(m) Blues: C, D#, F, F#, G, A# Added Note from C Pent. Minor = F# (b5)
C Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in C Blues: C, D, D#, E, G, A Added Note from C Pent. Major = D# (b3) C#(m)/Dbm Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in C#(m)/Dbm Blues: C#, E, F#, G, G#, B Added Note from C#/Db Pent. Minor = G (b5) C#/Db Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in C#/Db Blues: C#, D#, E, F, G#, A# Added Note from C#/Db Pent. Major = E (b3)
D(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in D(m) Blues: D, F, G, G#, A, C Added Note from D Pent. Minor = G# (b5) D Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in D Blues: D, E, F, F#, A, B Added Note from D Pent. Major = F (b3) D#(m)/Ebm Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in D#(m)/Ebm Blues: D#, F#, G#, A, A#, C# Added Note from C Pent. Minor = A (b5)
D#/Eb Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in D#/Eb Blues: D#, F, F#, G, A#, C Added Note from D#/Eb Pent. Major = F# (b3) E(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in E(m) Blues: E, G, A, A#, B, D Added Note from E Pent. Minor = A# (b5) E Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in E Blues: E, F#, G, G#, B, C# Added Note from E Pent. Major = G (b3)
F(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in F(m) Blues: F, G#, A#, B, C, D# Added Note from F Pent. Minor = B (b5) F Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in F Blues: F, G, G#, A, C, D Added Note from F Pent. Major = G# (b3) F#(m)/Gbm Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in F#(m)/Gbm Blues: F#, A, B, C, C#, E Added Note from F#/Gb Pent. Minor = C (b5)
F#/Gb Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in F#/Gb Blues: F#, G#, A, A#, C#, D# Added Note from F#/Gb Pent. Major = A (b3) G(m) Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in G(m) Blues: G, A#, C, C#, D, F Added Note from G Pent. Minor = C# (b5) G Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in G Blues: G, A, A#, B, D, E Added Note from G Pent. Major = A# (b3)
G#(m)/Abm Blues (Pent. Minor + b5) Notes in G#(m)/Abm Blues: G#, B, C#, D, D#, F# Added Note from G#/Ab Pent. Minor = D (b5) G#/Ab Blues (Pent. Major + b3) Notes in G#/Ab Blues: G#, A#, B, C, D#, F Added Note from G#/Ab Pent. Major = B (b3) In Summary: The red dot pattern provided (and the blue note) will allow you to search specifically for the root note under each scale section. This is mainly intended for beginners or guitarists that need to think of scales as chords. The next section will outline the same pattern template, but this time there's no red dot.
Scale Pattern Template (Black Dots) These are the only scale patterns you need for EITHER the minor Blues scale or the Major Blues scale. There are no red dots/root notes here, so once you get the hang of the root locations, you can just use this sheet all on its own. Bam! You have both the Major and Minor Blues scales using just these 5 patterns. Again, the tell-tale of where a blue note is located will be 3 notes in a row, on the same string, without any space between them. Pattern 1 above will have a blue note on the D string. Pattern 2 above will have a blue note on the B string. Pattern 3 above will have a blue note on the A string. Pattern 4 above will have a blue note on the G string. Pattern 5 above will have a blue note on the E string. Now that's all you need to wonder about the blues!
