1 EYFS Welcome Booklet Scoill yn Jubilee

2 Dear This booklet is for you and your family. It tells you all about the different things that happen at Scoill yn Jubilee. We hope that you enjoy looking through it and look forward to seeing you soon when you start school. Mrs Wright Ms Watson Mrs Matthews Mrs Leonetti SESO Class Teacher SESO Class Teacher EYFS Co-ordinator You are Special You will take it in turns with your friends to be Special Helper for the day. You might do jobs like taking the dinner list to the office or sitting in the teacher s chair. You can earn stampers on your chart for great behaviour. When you have got 25 you will be able to choose a special prize from the prize box in Mrs Peirce and Mrs Adamson s office. Your Things You will have your own coat peg with your name and picture on it. You will hang your coat here. 1

3 In the classroom you will also have your name on one of the Book Bag Boxes. Try to keep your book bag standing up so it is easier to get. Letters for home will go in your book bag together with your school reading book when you have one. Ask your grown-up to check your bag regularly. Arriving in the Morning When you come to school you will wait on the playground with your grown-up. Your teacher will open the classroom door at 8:50am. You can bring your grown-up into the classroom and choose your lunch together. If your grown up wants to talk to your teacher then they can do this. At 9:00am the bell will ring and that means it is time to say goodbye to your grown-up. Morning Snack During the morning you will be able to have a drink of milk, apple juice or water and eat your snack at the snack table. For your snack you can choose from a piece of fruit to eat. This might be an apple, pear, banana or satsuma. 2

4 Toilets You can go to the toilet whenever you need it. If you are with a teacher it is polite to ask but if you are with your friends completing challenges then you can just go! We have a toilet for boys and one for girls. It would be really great if you can go to the toilet by yourself before you start school. Lunch Time When you stay at school for lunch you will eat it in the school hall, at a table with children from your class. You can choose to bring a packed lunch in a special box from home. Please make sure it has your name on, so you will not lose it. Or, you may like to have a special cooked lunch from school instead. You can see an example of our school menu at:- If you have great manners at lunch time you might be chosen to eat your lunch at the Top Table with children from other classes and one of the teachers. What will you do at school? You will sign in with your grown up when you first arrive. At first this will mean practising your name. As the year goes on you will be able to write messages to your teacher and friends, telling them about things you have done outside school, things you enjoy or things that you are planning to do. Next you will spend a little time on the carpet saying hello to everyone. After that you will either read with friends, choose a challenge or go outside with a group to play games or dance. 3

5 Reading During the morning you might share a reading book with a few of your friends. We call this guided reading. At first you will remember the stories just by looking at the pictures. With lots of practise you will begin to use the letter sounds you know to help you sound out and blend sounds in words. You will have a reading record sheet to keep in your book bag. This is the place where your grownup can write down when you read to them and how you got on. The grey bits are for your grown-up to fill in. Ask your grown-up to do this every week. Writing 4 Writing is FUN! At school you will learn how to form your letters correctly and also how to write sentences. We write while we play all the time; in role play, outside and on the writing table. If you want to practise your name, use these letters to help you. Only use a capital letter at the start of your first and last names please.

6 Our writing goes through lots of different stages. At first you will draw pictures to tell your story and then as your arm and hand muscles get stronger you will be able to start forming recognisable letters. We will do lots of activities to help build your muscles. You can help at home by; playing with play dough, building with Duplo blocks, using safety scissors, dancing with ribbons or drawing outside with chalks. 5

7 Challenge Areas You might choose to complete some of the learning challenges, like this one, where you can pretend you are going shopping! You might want to spend time in other areas of the classroom like... the book corners. Where you can read a book to one of our class teddies or listen to a story. If you fancy writing a postcard, a shopping list, an adventure story or create a fantastic picture you might want to find one of our writing tables. You could have an adventure in the role play area. That might mean going to the moon in a space rocket, planting your own flowers in an inside garden, going on a camping trip or looking after the babies in the home corner. 6

8 You can make all sorts of things on our craft table. Watch our fish, or catch your own fish in the water tray! You could use the laptops to practise your reading or counting. You can build a tower or totem pole in the construction area. 7

9 Maths After lunch you will spend some time on the carpet or outside playing maths games in a small group. You might be measuring, weighing, looking at shapes, making models and following directions. There are always lots of maths challenges for you to have a go at in our classrooms. Before you come to school you can do lots of things at home with your family that will help you with your maths:- Sort blocks by colour and size Fit jigsaw puzzles together Learn nursery rhymes and number songs such as five currant buns Play lots of games where you have to throw a dice and move along a board Cooking - talk about which things are heavy and light, how much you need and counting and sharing Talking about your family. Who is the youngest, oldest, tallest or shortest? Talk about time using words such as morning, night, yesterday, tomorrow and next week At bath time look at which things float or sink; is the bath full or empty? When you are getting dressed look at things you put on first and last, which is the back and front, how many buttons have you got? At meal times you can lay the table and make sure you have enough knives and forks When you go shopping you can look at the numbers and look at coins. 8

10 This is how we write our numbers: Physical Development At school you will be doing physical learning every day. We open our outdoor area daily to explore nature and enjoy a wide variety of toys and equipment. We like to keep active and create challenges involving exercise and games helping to build your understanding of sports, teamwork and traditional playground games. You won t need a school PE kit to take part in our active sessions. 9

11 Forest School Every week you will go to Forest School. Please bring wellingtons to leave at school. You will wear them for all outdoor learning in wet weather. A warm and waterproof coat is essential every day during the Winter. 12 Home Time You go home at 3:15pm. Your Mum, Dad or someone else you know should wait for you in the playground outside your classroom. Your teacher will make sure they see your grown-up before you go outside. Early Years Foundation Stage Profile When you have been at school a few weeks, your teacher will invite your grown-ups into school for a little chat. We will talk about all the different things you can do. These include; looking at books, getting your coat and shoes on, tidying up, colouring, counting and playing with other children. All these things make up your Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. We create electronic profiles called Learning Journeys with quotes, photographs and targets achieved by you. Each term your grown-up will be invited in and given a copy of your progress. We may ask you to practise learning at home and give you activities to help you progress more. We know that learning doesn t just happen at school. We would like to celebrate your achievements out of school too. These might include learning to ride your bike, gaining a swimming certificate or mastering something you have found tricky. We hope you will bring in some things to share and display on our WOW wall! 11

13 At Scoill yn Jubilee we promote a culture that encourages children and teachers to become better learners It allows children to approach difficulties in learning without fear of failure It develops confidence It encourages children to take ownership of their learning It supports self reflection It is not additional to teaching but is grounded within everyday teaching and learning It gives clear labels for the children to use to develop understanding of learning processes. You may hear the children talking about our learning animals and perhaps tell you they have been brave like Spider! Look out for our 6Rs working wall in the classroom! You can support our learning culture by asking some of these questions at home... What was your favourite thing that happened today? What was something new that you learned? What great questions did you ask today? Who did you play with? What did you do that was tricky? Which challenges did you choose to do today? What did you do that was different? What happened that you are proud of? What didn t go to plan today? What will you do differently tomorrow? 12
