2 SCENE 8 SAME MONDAY NIGHT WHITE CASTLE (White Castle is filled with CUSTOMERS at tables... is cleaning up tables as enters) Hey, can I still get a shake? (he looks at her...she smiles) What do you want, Pauline? We re closin up soon. Just sayin hi. You know, I ve tried calling you. Didn t you get my messages? Yeah, didn t you get mine? No. Exactly. ( takes away a MAN s tray before he s done and dumps it) What the hell? MAN ( looks at him for a moment then moves on to the next table wiping it down) Bobby, wait, come on. What is your deal, huh? I got no deal, Pauline, I m just trying to finish up here cause I got things to do, you know, very important things. Plus, I can t have you bothering me at work. My boss is already ticked at me. (he moves to the next table, continuing to clean) 42

3 Ok, if you didn t want to talk to me, how come you was out in front of my house last night? That must have been somebody else. I saw you. I saw it was you. You slowly drove by my house. Why? Oh, oh, what? I can t drive down your block now? Huh? I gotta go way outta my way, just so I don t drive down your street? You know, you re too much, Pauline. ( takes a WOMAN s tray away and dumps it before she s done and continues on to the next table) All I m askin is what s goin on here. Between us. I mean, haven t we been together a long time now? Yeah. And, didn t you tell me, not only was we goin together but that I was your best friend? Well, yeah. And, didn t you tell me how you really feel? Ohhhh--what were those words again? Oh yeah-- deep down inside ya? Yeah...yeah. And, what? Now none of that means anything? Did you really mean all of that or was it all just to get me to sleep with you? 43

4 SCENE 11 WEDNESDAY MORNING--A BROOKLYN STREET (we hear the sound of a truck pulling down the street...lights up on street...the FACES are playing stickball) Damn bread truck. He s gotta drive right though our game, huh? That s all right, we ll make sure we hit em double in the mornin. GAME ON! Hey, give me the ball. (entering with a brown deli delivery box) Fresh bread and doughnuts! (the GUYS grab the bread and start eating) I still can t believe those dumb-asses just leave em outside the deli door. I can t believe you guys get up this early to swipe the bread delivery. You never got up this early for nothin in your whole life. You don t understand. This is no normal bread. We re talkin Caputo s fresh semolina...still warm. It s so good it s like God gave birth in my mouth. (beat) 59

5 What the hell is wrong with you? That s disgusting! Hey--did you see what the Yankees are gonna pay Jackson? Yeah--I heard. My Pop s all pissed off cause they re paying him more than Piniella. Just another case of a paisan gettin screwed. Piniella ain t Italian. What?! No--he s like Spanish or somethin. You know, you just ruined my entire day. If I had that type of money, I d get myself a Mercedes, you know. You re never gonna get yourself a Mercedes... #8 DOG-EAT-DOG...those things cost too much money.
