2 CONTENT CURATION BEST PRACTICES If you re curating content, you should always follow the below best practices - no matter where the curation occurs. This will ensure maximum visibility while also maintaining proper ethical standards. 1. Have you found amazing content that you are sharing because it s amazing, not just because you need to share something? 2. Has the majority of your audience never seen this content? (80% or More) 3. If curating photos, have you reached out for permission from the original source? 4. Have you added significant value to the sourced content? 2

3 5. Can you realistically say you are impressing the original content creators with the way the content is formatted/designed, and/or the commentary you add? 6. Does the curated content utilize your brand voice when shared? 7. When curating, are you highlighting the original post, not attempting to steal traffic by posting the majority of the content? (such as posting a full recipe) 8. Have you added some kind of call to action at the end of the post, such as subscribing, sharing, downloading an ebook, or checking out a tool? 3

4 CREATING THE PERFECT ROUNDUP POST Not every piece of curated content is a roundup post - but many of them are. If you re creating a roundup post, the below checklist will put you on a path towards maximum success. 1. Is your post focused around a keyword in order to maximize traffic potential? 2. Does your post use an attractive, list-focused headline? (Example: 25 Paleo Dessert Ideas That Won t Hurt Your Waistline) 3. Does your URL use the keyword as the only element? (Example: 4. Are you sourcing content based on data, such as total # of shares on BuzzSumo or links on OpenSiteExplorer? 4

If you have a prominently Pinterest-focused audience, does your content include a tall, content-mashup image featuring a text overlay that describes the post, either at the top of the post or custom coded in the share button? (Example: Link) 6. Are your curated images shown in a consistent format throughout the post, such as full-width? 7. Is your post scannable, such as using descriptive subheaders, short paragraphs, and bullet lists? 5

6 CONTENT DISTRIBUTION If your content isn t just an update on social networks, you need to think about distribution. The below steps will make sure every post sees as many eyeballs as it deserves. 1. Have you reached out to everybody you ve mentioned on the post, if applicable? 2. Have you reached out to high-influence distributors of the sourced content using tools such as BuzzSumo and OpenSiteExplorer? 3. Have you evaluated Reddit to see if there is a subreddit worth submitting to? 4. Have you evaluated the opportunity to do cold outreach for the content? 6

7 NETWORK-FOCUSED CONTENT Every network is a little bit different. If your audience is prominent on any of the below networks, check these off your list as well to see even more success. 1. Pinterest: Does your blog utilize a plugin that displays a Pinterest mouseover button automatically? (Example: Link) 2. Pinterest: If creating a new board, have you done keyword research to pick an optimal title for SEO purposes? 3. Twitter: Are mentioning the content authors, where possible? 4. Twitter: Is the tweet placed between two pieces of copy? 7

8 1. Twitter: If applicable, have you added an image that offers a preview of the post? 2. Facebook: Are mentioning the content authors? 3. Are your campaigns properly tagged so content creators can see where traffic is coming from? 8
