5 1. Introduction This study was undertaken at the request of Simon Parsons and researched between December 2014 and March The research was undertaken using online sources and civil registration certificates. Lines were traced back as far as possible given the limitations of online records prior to the start of civilian registration in Census records have been used, where possible, to flesh out residence and occupation details for ancestors. Research conducted using public records does have limitations, and there will be marriages, relationships and children that have not been identified in this study. All information provided is given in good faith and belief in its accuracy but it is always possible for mistakes to have been made. A wealth of detail is contained on the reports and diagrams in the binder - but even more is available on the accompanying CD where images of parish record extracts and census records can be found! The CD also contains the family tree data in a GEDCOM file format suitable for importing into Family History software and online Genealogy sites such as Find My Past and Ancestry! The GEDCOM format is an agreed format for storing and sharing genealogical information. The CD also contains a free GEDCOM viewer providing basic tools for looking at the GEDCOM file. The following source material was referenced in the study. Many other online sources were also searched for information. 12 7. Surname Report - Waterhouse Name Derivation In all likelihood the Waterhouse surname refers to a house surrounded by water such as a Water Mill or possibly a moated house. The surname appears as early as 1308 in the city rolls for Wakefield, Yorkshire where an Adam del Waterhous is listed. Villages and towns called Waterhouse and Waterhouses can be found in Devon, Wiltshire, Staffordshire and Durham. It is likely that substantial mills or moated houses gave these settlements their name, in turn, some occupants of those places will also have adopted the location name as their surname. In common with many other surnames the spelling has developed and changed over time. Variants include Waterhous, Waterhowse and the now common Waterhouse. Earliest Recorded Usage It is not surprising that earliest known uses of the name can be found among the aristocracy as common people would not as often be mentioned in writing! The Waterhouse family of Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, claim descent from Sir Edward Waterhouse, a knight during the time of King Henry III. Dating the name to the 13th Century. A number of Irish settlers called Waterhouse can also be traced, among them being another Edward Waterhouse who was knighted in Waterhouse Name Distribution 1881 This map shows the distribution of people called Waterhouse in the 1881 Census. It can be seen that the main concentration is in the North and particularly the North West. However, there is also a concentration of sorts in the South East which is where the Waterhouse branch of the Parsons family hail from. 8

13 Famous "Waterhouses" Through the centuries there have been a number of prominent "Waterhouses" including: Agnes Waterhouse (c ), the first woman executed for witchcraft in England Alfred Waterhouse ( ), an English architect Charles Waterhouse (British politician) ( ), a Conservative Member of Parliament Doug Waterhouse ( ), Australian inventor of the active ingredient in Aerogard Edwin Waterhouse ( ), an English accountant, co-founder of "Price Waterhouse" Gilbert Waterhouse ( ), an English architect and war poet Graham Waterhouse (born 1962), composer and cellist, son of William Waterhouse Henry Waterhouse ( ), a Naval officer associated with settlement of Australia John Waterhouse ( ), inventor of "Waterhouse Stops" (photographic equipment) John William Waterhouse ( ), a British Pre-Raphaelite painter Keith Waterhouse ( ), an English writer Matthew Waterhouse (born 1961), a British actor Robbie Waterhouse, an Australian bookmaker involved in the Fine Cotton scandal Rupert Waterhouse ( ), English physician, see Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome William Waterhouse ( ), Bassoonist, musicologist, father of Graham Waterhouse 9

26 14. Walter Henry Parsons Walter was born in 1875 in the small hamlet of Nimmer near Chard in Somerset. By 1891 he was working as a toothbrush maker with other members of his family. But he obviously decided that wasn t the life for him so in 1896 he joined the army. He was attested at Axminster on the 7th December 1896 at the age of 21 years and 3 months. General service, Cavalry. Interpreting his attestation papers it would appear that he was initially recruited by the 3rd Volunteer Battalion (VB) Devon Regiment - a militia unit. His papers indicate that he was happy to be enlisted for His medical examination took place on the 8th December in Exeter at which point he was declared fit for service in the Corps of Dragoons of the line (Cavalry). It doesn't look like he ever made it into the cavalry as he was transferred to the Coldstream Guards on the 10th December! This is what his medical examination had to say about him: Height: 5' 10" Weight: 144 pounds Chest: Complexion: Sallow Eyes: Brown Hair: Light brown That could very well be a description of myself! 22

27 He was based in England from 1896 until the 9th March 1899 when he set out for Gibraltar before reaching South Africa on the 28th October. He was promoted Lance Corporal on the 2nd February 1898 and Corporal on 24th June Boer War He served in South Africa in the 2 nd Boer war until 18th December 1900 with the Coldstream Guards being awarded the Queen's South Africa War medal with the following battle clasps: Belmont 23 November 1899 (cc) Modder River 28 November 1899 (cc) Dreifontein 10 March 1900 Awarded to troops serving with Army Headquarters and Lt Gen French's column which advanced from Popular Grove on 10 March 1900 (OFS) Johannesburg Awarded to those troops who, on 29 May 1900, were north of an east and west line through Klip River Station and east of a north and south line through Krugersdorp Station (Transvaal) Diamond Hill June 1900 (Transvaal) On the 14th May 1900 he was appointed Lance Sergeant On returning to England on the 19th December 1900 he was posted to the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards. On the 16th January 1902 he was promoted Sergeant. On the 24th June 1903 he extended his service to complete 12 years. On the 30th April 1904 he was promoted Colour Sergeant. But it wasn't all plain sailing. In 1905 he faced a courts martial for conduct unbecoming. He tried to resign from the Guards to avoid trial but wasn t allowed to do so. He was busted down to Corporal! Possibly as a result of his demotion he was posted to 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards on 12 September In 1907 he re-engaged with the Coldstream Guards in London for time to take his service term to 21 years. 23

28 In July 1914 he was posted to 22 nd Bn County Of London Regt (Queens Regt) as a Sergeant. In March 1915 he was Promoted Colour Sgt and appointed CSM (Company Sergeant major) and in July 1915 acting RSM (W Off Cl 1). Perhaps due to his age, 39 in 1914, he wasn t sent to France until April It's very hard to read his service card at this time but it would appear that he was first employed at the Labour Corps Base Depot in Boulogne before being attached to 72 Labour Company. It looks like he might have suffered from tremors resulting in him being sent to No 2 General Hospital at Le Havre on 5th December He was then shipped back to the UK on the HMHS Panama with Neurasthenia (shell shock) in December He was invalided out of the army on 23rd March Despite suffering from neurasthenia, Walter was still fit enough to father another two children including my father in 1923! Walter died in 1924 at the age of
