2 Class 2 covered getting a user name and password to Family Tree, an orientation to the person page, and the process of connecting your ancestor to existing data. Class 3 (this class), including: 1. Add a name, with nickname and spelling variations 2. Add a real or approximate date 3. Add a definite or best guess location

3 Why are data entry standards important? Incorrectly entered data results in duplicate people

4 and duplicate people have duplicate families

5 Duplicate people result in duplicated family ordinances

6 Vital Info section: name given at birth (male or female) Woman s maiden surname Jr or MD Infant daughter

7 Other Info section: nicknames

8 Other Info section: name and spelling variations Adding a woman s married name here is helpful in finding death and burial records. Watch for alternate spellings found in records. Add them here to help Family Tree discover possible duplicates.

9 Enter Challenging Names! 1. Harry Junior Hansen, called Junior as a child 2. Ezekiel Morgan Wilson known to friends as Zeke 3. Emmett Devine sometimes spelled Divine 4. Infant daughter of John & Mary Jensen, who died as a baby. 5. Melissa Marie Hendricks, whose gravestone reads Melissa Marie Larrison. 6. Megan Grace Masters, who married and later divorced Jens Joneson. 7. John Jefferson s wife, Patience, maiden surname undiscovered. 8. Mrs. Jenny Kitchell, who is now marrying Jason Smith.

In the Person Page, add: Person s name at birth in Vital Info section Alternate names, nicknames & spelling variations in Other Info section 3. How to enter and standardize: Dates, whether known or estimated Locations, whether real or best guess Homework Assignment Before beginning Class 4, edit incorrectly entered names, dates and places you find in at least 5 person pages in Family Tree. Be sure to standardize the dates and locations.
