1 State of Tennessee Department of State Tennessee State Library and Archives Dero A. Darwin, Jr. Genealogical Collection, Creator: Darwin, Dero A., Jr., Inclusive Dates: , bulk Scope & Content: COLLECTION SUMMARY Consists primarily of photocopied genealogical research compiled by the donor on the Darwin family and its related branches. The research included covers correspondence, Bible records, family trees, articles, indentures, tax and voter lists, accounts, estate settlements, wills, newspaper clippings, accounts, newsletters, photographs, muster rolls, and a church ledger. The majority is correspondence. Notable correspondents are Christopher Darwin of England, Frances Corcoran, Carolynn Bettis, and Nannie Darwin. The letters contain valuable genealogical information in the form of oversize family charts, Bible records, and photocopied pictures of Masters, Cain, and Lawson family members, and of the Jones Cemetery in White Hall, Illinois. This collection also holds four Bibles that previously belonged to Malissa A. Willis, Rev. M. R. Chilcutt, and Calvin W. Gilliam. The fourth Bible is unidentified, but is dated Willis and Chilcutt s Bibles include handwritten notes on births, marriages, and death dates on its cover pages. These notes were scanned and placed in the Library s vertical file, and the Bibles were transferred to the Bible Collection. In addition to the Holy Books, there are several photocopies and handwritten records from the Darwin-Bland Bible, George Cowan Darwin Family Bible, and the Darwin Bible compiled and indexed by Mrs. J. E. Hays, State Historian, in
2 This collection also includes a small ledger detailing the organizational beginnings of the White s Bend Church in Jackson County, Tennessee, in The ledger contains a list of parishioners, records of church sessions, and adult and infant baptisms dates. Also of note are ten photographs of the Brittam Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and the Chilcutt Cemetery in Bradley County, Tennessee. These photos date to Another possible interest for researchers seeking Darwin family genealogical material is a deed of gift to the Tennessee Historical Society. This deed lists all the materials that Dero Darwin donated to the organization in A few other things to note in this collection are the two photocopied muster rolls for W. J. Masters, Co. F., 28 th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers, and Simeon Masters, Co. E., 8 th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry; several incomplete newsletters from the Upper Cumberland Genealogical Association and the Petty and Withrow families; and the wills of William Darwin, John Richmond, and Samuel Waugh. All materials in Boxes 2 and 3 were kept in the original order in which they were donated. These folders are labeled with family surnames and contain correspondence and other genealogy related research materials. Oversize Folder 1 contains several photostats of charters, wills, land records, court documents, and correspondence dating from Oversize Folder 2 includes the Herald Citizen Bicentennial Edition, dated 1996, and several original deeds for David Masters in Overton County dating from Also included is a photocopy of Notley Masters s pension application dating All published materials donated with this collection were transferred to the Library holdings.
