Over the past few decades, Africa has progressed dramatically from the data-poor to data-rich situation Census rarely been used in the past as a resource for development planning

2 The ACAP Initiative Access to the vast amount of data collected has often been a major problem Censuses neglected when there was an enormous increase in the data-analytic capacity necessary to evaluate them Need to preserve Africa census data in order to avoid perpetual loss due to poor storage Important need to go beyond census analytical reports for a better understanding of population and society Why ACAP? Demographic Capacity Strengthening in Africa: Collaborative Training Analyze African Census Data using modern demographic and statistical techniques: Collaborative Research with African Researchers. The development of the Pan-African Census Explorer (PACE): An interactive census microdata data archive covering several years for over 30 African Nations.

4 Why The Pan-African Census Explorer? Most micro-data from the censuses taken in Africa (including some of those taken in the last thirty years) are irretrievably lost. These data are an invaluable source of information for understanding demographic processes in Africa. Various African governments and ACAP are currently analyzing African census micro-data. ACAP General Objective The overall objective of ACAP is to make census data more useful and relevant to policy formulation and development planning. For more details visit the ACAP web page at (

5 Collaborative Efforts Using Census Data at Regional Analysis and Utilization of Census Data-SADC Millennium Census Project ACAP-INDEPTH Collaborative Research Program on Population and Health in Africa Data needs for Proactive Development Planning Analysis and Utilization of SADC Censuses Preparation of manuals, guidelines, reports and monographs; Harmonization of terms, concepts and definitions for use in the analysis of census and survey data across the SADC region; Training of analysts; Training of government policy makers and planners in the use of census data; and Conducting a SADC census data dissemination workshop.

6 ACAP-INDEPTH Collaboration Seeks to: Realize joint research projects on patterns, characteristics, and trends in African population and health using census, survey, and DSS data; Exchange experiences and expertise of research fellows working on specific topics that use both types of data; Facilitate access to defined data banks by project researchers.
