4 STUDY DESCRIPTION TITLE: October Household Survey, 99 SADA 00 PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) DEPOSITOR: Statistics South Africa ORGANISATION HOUSING THE DATA: Statistics South Africa Private Bag x Pretoria, 000 South Africa Tel: (0) 0 9 Fax: (0) Web: SERIES DATA: Series name: Principal Investigator: Currently available: October Household Surveys Statistics South Africa ABSTRACT: During October 99, under the Census 99 motto "Count us in", a hundred thousand employees of Statistics South Africa fanned out across the cities, towns, townships, informal settlements, villages, farms and rural areas of the country Their task was to record the details of people living in more than nine million households of South Africa, as well as those in hostels, hotels and prisons By contrast, Census 99 was the first nation wide census since the splitting up of the country under apartheid after 90 and sought to apply the same methodology to everyone: visiting the household, and obtaining details about all its members from a representative who was either interviewed, or else filled in the questionnaire in the language of choice GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: South Africa IMPORTANT VARIABLES: Employment, unemployment, informal sector, internal migration, services available by type of dwelling, access to health and social services, safety and well-being of household, households by average household size and type of dwelling, level of education, quality of life, health statistics, vital statistics DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES: Age, gender, level of education, marital status, migration, use of health services, economic activity, unemployment, employment and self-employment

5 UNIVERSE: Households in the nine provinces of South Africa METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION: Survey Questionnaire SAMPLING: The preliminary data base of enumerator areas, as established during the demarcation phase of Census 99, constituted the sampling frame for selecting enumerator areas for the 99 OHS Statistics SA took advantage of the fact that the fieldwork for the survey took place at the same time as the post-enumeration survey for Census 9 In order to save the costs, the sample of enumerator areas drawn for the post enumeration survey formed the basis of the sample for the 99 OHS The sampling procedure involved stratification by province and enumerator area type (formal and informal urban areas, commercial farms, traditional, and other nonurban areas) Independent, systematic samples of enumerator areas were drawn for each stratum within each province The smaller provinces were given a disproportionately larger number of enumerator areas than the bigger provinces Altogether, 00 enumerator areas were drawn Interviewing for the post enumeration survey took place in these 00 enumerator areas, but for the 99 OHS, the enumerator area to the east and to the west of the sampled enumerator area was visited Within each of these enumerator areas, systematic sampling was applied to select 0 households to visit Altogether, 00 enumerator areas were identified, and 000 households were visited WEIGHTING: The 99 OHS was weighted to the population census of October 99, as adjusted by the post enumeration survey To calculate weights, a generalised ranking with a linear distance function was used to implement a population control adjustment The marginal population frequencies of the variables sex and age group (0 -, -, - 9, 0-9, 0-9, 0 - and + years) were used within each province and each population group Previously, OHS surveys were weighted to reflect estimates of population size using the 99 population census, and not the one of 99 The data reported here for 99 are thus not presently directly comparable with the previously published OHS figures UNITS OF OBSERVATION: Households DATE OF DATA COLLECTION: October 99 EXTENT OF DATA COLLECTION: data files in SPSS and machine-readable documentation and questionnaire Part : Death Data Number of cases: Number of records: Number of records per case: Logical Record Length: 0 Number of variables:
