2 EPISTLE READING Reading is from St. Paul to the Hebrews 1:1-12 Brethren, In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom he created the world. He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his world. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has obtained is more excellent than theirs. And again, when he brings the first born into the world, he says, Let all God s angels worship him. Of the angels he says, Who makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire. 3 THE THEOTOKIAN GOSPEL READING Reading is from Saint Matthew 1:1-25 Let us attend, The book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Aram, and Aram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa, and Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. And after the deportation to Babylon, Jechoniah was the father of Salathiel, and Salathiel the father of Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the Deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to Christ fourteen generations. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bea a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel (which means, God with us). When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus. 3

4 THE THEOTOKIAN CHRIST COMES OUT And you, Bethlehem, house of Ephratha, are few in number to be reckoned among the thousands of Juda; yet out of you shall one come out to me, to be a ruler of Israel; and his comings out (his exodus-es were from the beginning, even from eternity. Therefore shall he give the (to wait), till the time that she who is in labor gives birth, and then the remnant of their brethren shall return to the children of Israel. (Micah 5: 1-2, Septuagint translation) As those of us on the Older Calendar begin the second day of the Forefeast of Christmas, and NC-people of the Forefeast of Theophany, I m looking at this well-known prophecy about the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. It strikes me this morning that it is called not an entrance, and not a coming in to our world, but rather a coming out, to the mission of His Father. Indeed, our God is not One Who Self-isolates, but Who steps out and extends Himself, again and again, sharing His Being with us and other creation from the beginning, in different ways. And His only-begotten Son comes out in a world not-exactly welcoming, or even safe, for Him and His human family. Christ s exodus of the whole Family to Egypt, until His death-trampling exodus from the tomb. As God s only-begotten Son comes out to share our vulnerabilities, (both in Bethlehem and in the River Jordan), let me also come out beyond my little self, and into communion with Him. This morning I can join the ever-birth-giving Church, and let God s grace be productive in my day, whatever its insecurities and vulnerabilities. God is the Lord, and has appeared unto us! Blessed is he ;who comes in the name of the Lord! CHRIST IS BORN! GLORIFY HIM! 4

5 THE THEOTOKIAN A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT To the Faithful of St. Mary s, The 2018 Annual Meeting will be held on January 27, If anyone has an item they would like considered being placed on the agenda, please contact either me or Father Dan. One agenda item that will be discussed is changing from the old calendar to the new calendar. This issue is resurfacing because there was talk years ago about possibly changing to the new calendar when we occupied the new church. There will be ample time to discuss the option at the Annual Meeting. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you may submit a written statement that will be read aloud in the meeting.. In March ballots will be given to each member in good standing. If the vote is to proceed with the calendar change,, then it will be presented to the Metropolitan s office for his blessing, and the change will be effective with the Liturgical calendar starting on September 1, The By-laws of the church state that to be a voting member you must be a member in good standing. A member in good standing is one that has paid their dues and is in good sacramental standing. If you are unsure of the status of your dues, please see Rodney. If you are unsure of your sacramental standing, please see Father Dan dues will be collected until the start of the Annual Meeting on January 27th. Dues paid after that date will be credited to the 2019 dues. As a note, $71 of the dues goes towards the annual Diocesan assessment. Please make an effort to be at the Annual Meeting on January 27, This is your church, and it is an opportunity to hear from others and offer you input in the workings of our beloved St. Mary s. 8 Dearly beloved in the newly born Christ Child, CHRIST IS BORN! GLORIFY HIM! CHRISTOS RAZDAJETSJA! SLAVITE JEHO! Christ is Born! Glorify Him! It is with these joyous words the I greet you as we celebrate the birth of our newly born Christ, born in a manger in Bethlehem. Through His birth He has shown forth as a light of knowledge to the world for through it, those to studied the stars learned from a star to worship You, the Sun of Truth, and to acknowledge You, rising from on high. These words taken from the Nativity Tropar sung at tonight s Nativity Vigil and tomorrow s Divine Liturgy remind us that Christ is the Sun of Truth, to acknowledge Him, and to always Glorify Him, as our ancestors did throughout the ages. A new chapter in the life of our beloved Saint Mary s has been completed. Pani Joan and I have made the move to our beautiful new Parish house and are gradually settling in, with odds and ends still being taken from the old house. We hope to be completely relocated within the next week or two. Pani and I want to say thank you to all who helped in this transition by preparing our new home for our arrival to moving furniture from the old to the new. From our family to your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Christ is Born! Glorify Him! Father Dan & Pani Joan Great are the deeds performed with faith; three youths rejoiced in the flaming furnace as if they stood in refreshing waters, and Daniel the Prophet faced lions as though they were sheep. Through their prayers, O Christ our God, save our souls. Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen. You did not worship a man-made image, O Thrice-Blessed Youths, but were glorified in the test of fire, protected by a power beyond description. From the searing flames you cried out to God, saying: Hasten to help us, O Merciful Lord, for in Your greatness You can do whatever You will. Dear Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I greet you with joy and love in the Name of our Incarnate Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Let us give thanks to Almighty God, by whose grace we have been given the opportunity to celebrate the Birth of His Son. If we look around, we find hatred, mistrust, suffering, and the absence of peace and love in our homes, neighborhoods, cities, country, and in fact the whole world. This reality in life makes us cry out for God s help, assistance, and intervention. My beloved ones, despite all the suffering, sorrow and injustice in our world, today joy and hope comes to us once more. That s why at this blessed time of the year we look forward to the arrival of the new born King. Therefore let us celebrate the miracle of His Birth. Let kindness come with every gift. Let compassion, forgiveness and love come with every greeting. Let our hearts be filled with prayer, charity, and reconciliation for one another. May all of us, Priests, Panis, Deacons, Sub-Deacons, Readers, Archons, Parish Officers, Parishioners (young and old), Friends and Supporters of the God-protected American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese experience the joy and wonders of the Shepherds and the awe and respect of the Three Wise Men at the arrival of the Messiah, our new born King.
