2 2 COACHING DEMO WITH MAI Would you say your life is busy? Full of distractions? Constantly changing? Your clients lives will likely be similar and your support can help them focus and make their goals a reality. When you improve your coaching skills, your ability to empower clients increases in turn. Review the coaching skills in this coaching demo with Mai and practice them during Health Histories and 6-Month Program sessions.
3 3 1. DESIGN ACTION Joshua helps Mai design action steps to maintain the spiritual practice she is enjoying with her husband, recommending that she find someone who can teach them a private yoga class. Try this: Coach: So, what are your action steps? Client: I don t know. I always have trouble with this. The action step from last time was meditating. I m still doing that and working on my dharma code. I ve made progress with that, so it is helping me. But I never know what to do next. Coach: Then you can reuse your action steps. You can say, This stuff is really working for me. I want to keep focusing on working my dharma code and my meditation twice a day. Client: Oh, okay, I thought that was cheating. Coach: No, it is not cheating.
4 4 As you practice your next Health History, how will you design actions with your practice clients? Skills you can use: Supporting your client to explore alternative ideas and solutions. Encouraging challenging actions while keeping a comfortable pace. Brainstorming detailed actions that will lead to results. Encouraging your client to take immediate action.
5 5 2. MANAGE PROGRESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY Try this: Client: I spent all this time searching for this big light bulb moment, but I think it s just finding peace and happiness with the little things. Coach: Sounds to me like the light bulb went off. Client: I think so. Coach: So it actually did happen. Client: It did happen. It s such a light feeling because all this time I was putting a lot of pressure on myself. Coach: That sounds good, that sounds really good. I m looking at your face and it looks very soft right now. It s very nice to see. Client: Thank you.
6 6 As you practice your next Health History, how will you manage progress and accountability with your practice clients? Skills you can use: Keeping your client on track with goals and actions. Confronting your client in a positive way if agreed on actions are not completed. Acknowledging your client for what s/he has learned or accomplished. Developing your client s ability to make decisions.
7 7 3. COMMUNICATE ABOUT HEALTH Joshua recommends more vegetables in Mai s diet as a way to relax her mind and body and maintain some balance. Try this: Client: So you re not saying one Ayurveda category is better than the other? Rather that it s good to recognize which category I tend to have more of in order to balance? Coach: Yeah, it s very important actually. I want to emphasize there is really no category that is better than another. What s beautiful about Ayurveda is that it says, Hey, you know what? We re all totally different so please don t try to shift your body into something that isn t natural to you. Client: It makes sense because we re not all built the same way. It s nice to see the science behind that. Would you call this science? Coach: Ayurveda means the science of life.
8 8 As you practice your next Health History, how will you communicate about health with your practice clients? Skills you can use: Considering your client s individual needs related to health. Providing diet or nutrition information to empower your client. Communicating primary food concepts. Providing one to three simple recommendations.
