4 Session overview What are interviewers looking for? How can you be the preferred candidate? Tips and strategies to stand out
5 WIFM? The interviewers primary objective is to find out: Will you perform the job to meet the requirements? Will you fit in with the existing team and organisational culture? Will you be a good ROI?
6 First impressions are important Before you meet: Phone call (raising your profile) Reply to s On the day: Punctuality Presentation Positive body language- handshake; posture; composure Opportunities to create a connection- smile; eye contact; conversational style
7 The 2 P s Preparation: How? Familiarise yourself with the organisation Thoroughly review your application and PD Visualise yourself in the role- specific examples of how you will undertake key responsibilities Consider a range of examples Uni; Work; Sport; Community; Travel Identify what specific and transferable skills you have which will add value Practise: Anticipate questions and formulate your answers Develop well prepared and considered answers Get feedback on your answers- before the interview
8 Expect a range of questions General What interests you in this role? Behavioural Can you describe a time you when had a number of competing deadlines and how you managed these? Situational You are working on a project in a small team and one of the members is not contributing; how would you handle this?
9 Strong answers Treat your answers as though you are telling a story Clear beginning, middle and end Keep responses focussed and relevant Answer each element of the question and refer to the key requirements of role Allow your enthusiasm and interest in the job to shine through Interviewers are looking for a balance between confidence and modesty
10 Are you the one? During this time, the interviewer is appraising you to determine: Will you fit in and get on with it? Do you have a clear understanding of what is required? What will you bring to the role that no one else can?
11 Avoid: Being too familiar What not to say Being negative Criticising others Asking about salary and conditions
12 Your questions Always have a few questions prepared to ask the interviewer(s) Presume some questions will be answered during the interview Consider questions that demonstrate your capacity to develop in the role
13 For example What do you anticipate will be the highs and lows of this role? What do all your team members have in common? Is there anything I could do before I commence to improve my successful transition into the role? What qualities do your most successful graduates have?
14 Is there anything else you would like to add? Don t miss this opportunity to: Reiterate your enthusiasm and ambition to gain the job Recap on your strengths and suitability Revisit any answers you would like to improve on Strengthen the connection
