Be a Writer Now - Class Workbook DAY 1 WRITING ROUTINE: - When are you going to write? - Your warm-up: - Your reward: VISUALIZATION EXERCISE: Picture yourself writing tomorrow, feeling happy and completely absorbed in the flow of the work. REPEAT THESE PHRASES TO YOURSELF: - "I am a writer." - "I will keep my writing schedule." - "I really enjoy writing." HOMEWORK: Why have you decided to make a commitment to your writing? Write a letter or to your future self explaining why your writing should be a priority. Then send this letter to yourself, or save it to reread in 5 days (I'll remind you). If you want, you can use Lettermelater to send it to your future self as an . Schedule the to be sent in 5 days time. You can create a free Lettermelater account here:

DAY 2 Write a poem or part of a story about someone locked in a dark room (you can decide why the person is locked there). Suggestion: Before you start writing, close your eyes and imagine yourself in the character's situation. Try to play out the scene in your head like a daydream. DAY 3 Write a part of a story or poem that includes all three of these elements: a lipstick print, jealousy, and something glimpsed in a mirror. DAY 4 Write a poem about things you've forgotten. Or write a story that starts with this situation: your character wakes up in an unfamiliar house with no memory of how s/he got there. TIME AUDIT. Track, hour-by-hour, how you spend your (non-writing) time during the next days, and make notes here. Example: 12 12:30 p.m. Make lunch. 12:30-1:00 p.m. Eat lunch. 1:00-1:30 p.m. Check s. (Etc.)

(You can continue your Time Audit on this page.)

DAY 5 Write a poem about dating experiences. Or write a story about a character who goes on a first date with someone s/he met over the Internet. Nothing about this person matches up with what s/he said about himself/herself online. What is going on? HOMEWORK: Keep going with your Time Audit. DAY 6 YOUR INSPIRATION BOOKSHELF: Make a list of approximately ten books you wish that you had written. Patricia Highsmith wrote a novel called STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Use the phrase "strangers on a train" in a poem. Or, write part of a story based on this idea: a stranger your character meets on a train tries to convince your character to do something that your character finds shocking or morally wrong.

HOMEWORK: Keep going with your Time Audit for one more day. OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: If you're interested, you can listen to an interview with Donald Ray Pollock about how he became a writer: DAY 7 - What is the one thing you're going to cut out of your schedule? - Is there anything you can do more efficiently? What is your strategy for that? Write a poem with the title, "What was stolen." Or write a story about a character who is robbing a house when s/he makes a surprising discovery. HOMEWORK: Put your time-saving plan into practice, and keep track of the results. Exactly how much time are you saving?

DAY 8 Write down the three phrases that you will repeat to yourself throughout the day. 1) 2) 3) Write a story or poem that includes all three of these elements: a new job, an enemy, and a secret room. HOMEWORK: Remember to repeat your three phrases throughout the day, and especially at bedtime. This is something you should do every day. DAY 9 Write a poem about a hospital at night. Or write a story about a character who has to sneak out of a hospital at night (you can decide why your character's in the hospital and why s/he has to sneak out). DAY 10 Write a poem about ghosts. Or write a story about someone who gets a great price on a house because it's supposedly haunted. His/her first night in his/her new house, s/he starts to think s/he's made a terrible mistake...

HOMEWORK: Write a letter or to yourself, congratulating yourself on keeping your writing schedule and the commitment you've made to your writing. Then send this letter to yourself, or save it to reread tomorrow. OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: Tonight when you go to bed, use Cynthia Harrison's technique to imagine the scene you're going to write tomorrow. DAY 11 EXERCISE: Use one of the techniques from this lesson to come up with a story or poem idea. HOMEWORK: Use techniques from this lesson to come up with at least two more writing prompts that you can use in the future. OPTIONAL: Send yourself the ideas as a letter or an , gifts from your muse to your future self. You can use Lettermelater.com to schedule an to be sent in the future.

DAY 12 Write a poem about a piece of advice you've received. Or write a story about a character who suspects her husband is bribing her psychiatrist to give her certain advice. OPTIONAL HOMEWORK - 1: Read about how Alexandra Sokoloff "designs" the look and feel of her stories: OPTIONAL HOMEWORK - 2: Try one of the prewriting techniques from this lesson to develop a writing idea. DAY 13 OPTIONAL WRITING PROMPTS: Write a poem about hiding places. Or write a story about a character who has to hide someone in his/her house. It's important that no one else living in the house discovers that this person is there (you can decide why). DAY 14 Write a poem about a real or imaginary brother or sister. Or write a story about someone who shows up at your character's house claiming to be a brother/sister your character never knew about. Your character thinks the person is lying, but why? OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: If you're interested in Ellen Langer's research on mindfulness, you can listen to an interview with her here: 01/ellen_langer_mindfulness_and_the_power_of_thought

DAY 15 EXERCISE: Write down some "What-if" questions that you can use as prompts for future stories or poems. If you need ideas, you can start with these phrases... - "What if I had made a different decision about?" - "What if someone found out that his/her parents were?" - "What if someone came home one day, and found waiting on his/her doorstep?" OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: Listen to an interview with young adult novelist Emma Carlson Berne, who describes using "What-if" questions to get ideas for her books. You can download this interview from the Ideas and Resources section of the course page. DAY 16 In Kafka's novella, "The Metamorphosis", a man wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant insect. Write a poem about a transformation. Or write a story about a character who changes his/her name, moves to a town where s/he doesn't know anyone, with the plan of starting a new life as a different person (you can decide why your character wants to do this).

DAY 17 EXERCISE: Come up with a story prompt based on an idea from a TV guide. For example, you can use (put your mouse over the name of a TV show to see the description). EXERCISE: Come up with a writing prompt based on something you've read. Make a note of the prompt in your course workbook. OPTIONAL HOMEWORK - 1: Come up with more writing prompts using the techniques in this lesson, and save them in your course workbook so you have them when you need ideas. If you want, you can send yourself the prompts in s or letters, gifts from your muse to your future self. You can use Lettermelater.com to schedule s to be sent in the future.

OPTIONAL HOMEWORK - 2: If you're interested, you can watch Pat Soloman's TED talk on The Hero's Journey and following your bliss: DAY 18 EXERCISE: Come up with writing prompts based on the following pairs of words from this lesson: - "shy" and "astrology" - "trick" and "audition" OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: Send your future self the prompts from this lesson in s (using Lettermelater.com if you want) or letters. DAY 19 Write a poem about your neighbor, or about someone you see frequently but have never talked to. Imagine something about this person's life. Or write a story about a character who is fed up with the noisy neighbor in the apartment next door. S/he comes up with a plan that s/he hopes will make the neighbor desperate to move away...

DAY 20 EXERCISE: Use the ideas in this lesson to come up with a writing assignment that you can give yourself in the future, and write it down here. If you like, you can send it to yourself as a letter or an (for example, using Lettermelater.com to schedule the so that you'll receive it in the future). Write a story or a poem in the form of text messages sent between two people's phones. (Ideas: one of the people is breaking off a wedding engagement with the other, or one of the people is telling the other that she's pregnant.) OPTIONAL EXERCISE: Write a haiku, a sestina, or a pantoum. You'll find guides to these three poetry forms in the Ideas and Resources section of the course page. DAY 21 OPTIONAL WRITING EXERCISE: Try rewriting one of your stories or poems from a different point of view. DAY 22 OPTIONAL EXERCISE: Start with two seemingly very different character ideas. For example, you could choose a kindergarten teacher and a professional assassin. Make a character profile for each of them. You can use the character questionnaires in the Ideas and Resources section to make your profiles. When the profiles are finished, mix and match between them. Give your kindergarten teacher some aspects of the assassin, and vice-versa. This is a fun away to come up with surprising character and story ideas.

OPTIONAL EXERCISE: Challenge yourself to write about something in a way that is the opposite of how you usually think about it. For example, can you think of a situation in which... - cheating or illness is good - generosity or loyalty is bad? By approaching a subject from a different angle, you can make new discoveries. DAY 23 Pick an animal or an object that you could write a poem about. Write down your choice here. Now, answer the questions from the lesson about this animal or object. OPTIONAL EXERCISE: Take a line of dialogue from a story you've written, and think of three completely different situations where someone might say that line. For example, let's start with this line: "You're really lucky." - "You're really lucky," Andrea said. "All the evidence was burned up in the fire." - "You're really lucky that no one else knows what a big jerk you are," Marilyn told her brother. - "I've decided to marry you," said Jake. "You're really lucky to get a guy like me." See what new story ideas this exercise inspires.

OPTIONAL EXERCISE: Choose a topic for a poem. if you want, you can use one of these topics: shadows, the rain, dancing, a tree. Now take a poem or story you've written in the past about another topic. Use at least two lines or phrases from that story or poem in your new poem. DAY 24 EXERCISE: Think of at least 6 ways to complete this phrase: "If only s/he hadn't..." Examples: - "If only she hadn't stolen that money..." - "If only he hadn't tried to flirt with his boss..." Come up with 6 more possibilities, and write them here. You can use them as prompts for stories or poems. OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: or mail yourself some writing ideas to inspire yourself in the future. You can use Lettermelater.com to schedule s so that they'll arrive at a future date.

DAY 25 Write a story or poem based on a fairy-tale, folktale, or myth, that changes the ending and other elements of the original story (e.g., Cinderella's prince marries one of the wicked stepsisters, Snow White falls in love with one of the seven dwarves...) DAY 26 Write a poem about a particular game or sport. Or write a story about a game or a sports match where your character is playing against someone who did something terrible to him/her in the past. Your character is determined to get revenge during the game. DAY 27 Write a poem with the title "Other People's Children". Or write a story about a character who agrees to take care of a friend's teenager son or daughter while the friend goes on a trip. But the teenager is out of control, and your character soon finds himself/herself with a big problem on his/her hands. DAY 28 Write a poem about the sensations of running as fast as you can. Or write a story in which your character has to find a friend and warn her before the friend makes a terrible mistake (e.g., quitting a job, breaking up with a boyfriend over a misunderstanding, committing a crime, going on vacation with a new boyfriend who has a dark past, etc.). The friend's cell phone is turned off, and the friend is nowhere to be found... DAY 29 Write a poem about the ocean. Or write a story about a character who finds a message in a bottle washed up on the beach. "Help me," the message reads, and there's a name and address...

DAY 30 Write a poem about happy endings. Or write a story about a couple who win the lottery and fervently disagree about what to do with the money. HOMEWORK: Plan your writing schedule for the next 30 days.
