1 Aya Abdul Fattah Jrmc 202 Interview Assignment ID: My interviewee s name is Farrah Najjar she is a relatively recent AUC alumni. She was born on the 7 th of April 1991 in Doha, Qatar and graduated from a British school called Park House English School in She then moved to Cairo and moved into AUC on campus dorms and lived alone till she graduated in spring 2012 as an undergraduate and now she is doing her masters and expecting to graduate with masters in spring I chose Farrah because I wanted to interview someone about the post graduate life, and she is a friend and I personally know her so I it was convenient as well. I think this topic is interesting because I know so many people that graduated and every person has a different opinion about graduation and their life so far afterwards, so I like to see who does what after they graduate and how they feel about it. 3 Aya: Hi. Farrah: Hello. Aya: (Giggle) Alright so, what s your name? Farrah: Uhh My name is Farrah Najjar. Aya: And do you have a title? Farrah: Um I m a grad student. Aya: Alright uh where do you live? Farrah: I live in the AUC new campus dorms. Aya: How come? Farrah: uh Well I m an international student um I am Palestinian and um my family lives abroad so I m here on my own. Aya: How s that? Farrah: umm its... its got its ups and down but I m I m used to it because I did my undergraduates here at AUC so this is my fifth year being here on my own and it s a pleasant experience. Aya: How old are you?

4 Farrah: I m turning 22. Aya: Ok, Um what did you major in while you studied here? Farrah: My major was multimedia journalism and I had a minor in sociology. Aya: When did you graduate? Farrah: I graduated spring Aya: Were you happy? (Giggle) Farrah: I was very excited I was very happy and I was looking forward to start and kick off my career especially because I did stuff involved in a lot of aspects that constitute journalism and I wasn t aware that I was going to start my masters but I got an amazing opportunity that I just couldn t let go off which is why I decided to stay and continue. Aya: And when you started your career life was it hard or did you lose the excitement that you kind off started with after graduation? Farrah: No, the excitement is definitely still here I had about three months to kind of experiment with some freelancing and some internships which which I did and it was a lot of fun but at the same time I felt like I wanted to come back to school because there was so much more that I wanted to learn and I definitely wanted to expand my my field and I wanted to expand my my my concentration and I felt that there was so much that I need to pick up and I and I thought a masters program would be perfect for it so as much as I was excited to start a career and start working and start an actual job I also wanted to to come back and and and get a higher education basically.

5 Aya: And what did you what uh what are you mastering in? Farrah: right now I m doing the international human rights law with the law department so it s a pretty different field but I feel like it s going to give me a good basis especially if I m going to continue as a journalist in the field that I want which is I think I I m into war journalism and I like to work with refugees and maybe some humanitarian work on the side also which is why I thought this would be a really perfect program and it really is we have amazing departments we have some really remarkable professors and I learned so much already and it s definitely going to be amazing next to my journalism degree. Aya: Did you have um difficulty studying a different major after studying a completely different major for quite a while? Farrah: Yes, I did I had a lot of difficulty at first especially because I I I didn t do political science when I was in my undergraduate year a lot of people with me in class now are political science majors they did political science for their undergraduates and most of them specialize in international law which was one of the requirements that I have to do last semester which is my first semester as a grad student there was a lot of terminology that wasn t I familiar with I have to to keep up with I have to become familiar with a lot of concepts that wasn t there before and it was definitely a challenge but it was really worth it I feel like I m learning a lot of things that I don t think I would have gained anywhere else even out of experience or some things that you have to understand we re also learning a lot about theories were doing the philosophy of law you learn a lot of things about why the law is there who makes it what morality has to do with it all these things that you think you wanna do you start questioning

6 and and you put things into perspective and you evaluate a lot of things and its making me it s making me [a lot of stuttering] understand really to a larger extent what I really want to accomplish in my life. Aya: And uh and that changed since before you started your masters degree? Farrah: Yes definitely it really has, I definitely will not ever give up on journalism I will always do journalism but I think that alongside that I m always going to at least work with NGO s and refugees in specific that s I feel like I need to focus on that especially because of my background I m Palestinian and I I know I visited various refugee camps and I know that a lot of them need development and I think that this this program is also giving me some tools and skills that I m going to need in that field especially if I m going to advocate for them especially if I m going to take on legal cases with resettlements or or things like that I m going to have to have this background that I m learning right now so it s definitely something I wasn t aware off before I started this program.
