3 If you ve got your interior design services just perfect, your next task needs to be getting your clients eyeballs on them. Your biggest ally in this is Google. But I don t mean hiring some creepy SEO company that guarantees you ll be on the top of the search engine results. I ve always been leery of those companies (and I m sure there are legit ones). I ve been a DIYer all my life so let me share with you how to get your client s eyes on your hot services. SEO is Your BFF It sounds scary, and it s totally not. It has taken me quite awhile to get the hang of it. When I first started out with my edesign business I was guessing most of the time on what I was doing with SEO (search engine optimization). And somehow people still found me. All this is to say that even if you don t master SEO today, you will master it and doing yourself a great service by learning about it. Think of SEO as building a foundation for your business. Every time you update your website with content and fabulous keywords that relate to your design business, Google takes note. Every time you save an image with descriptive keyword your client s are looking for, Google takes note. Every time you post a blog about something your client wants to learn with a great keyword, Google takes note. That s why you have to update your website. If you don t update your website Google thinks you died. Or at least that your business did.

4 Step #1 Research Keywords For Blog Posts What are you going to be writing about? Bedroom design? Great. Go to Google.com home page and you ll notice their autosuggest thing pop up in the drop down. Use it to your advantage since these are things real people already search for. Try typing in how to decorate bedroom like this: Even better try typing in how to decorate bedroom like:

5 Or you can get creative by typing this where can I buy bedroom: This is all about thinking like your client. And by doing these simple Google searches to give you ideas about what your clients are thinking about so you can blog about them. Let s pick how to decorate your bedroom like a hotel as our keyword which is a misnomer. This is actually a long tail keyword and this is the key to getting yourself found online. And you will notice I added in your to that long tail keyword otherwise it doesn t sound like how people would speak naturally. BONUS TIP: Take screenshots of these searches like I have so you can create a handy file to spark your memory later.

6 Step #2 Use Your Long Tail Keyword In A Blog Post Come up with a title with your long tail keyword: Designer Tips: How To Decorate Your Bedroom Like A Hotel You see that also created my URL automatically for my post with the exact words I put as my title. I actually suggest you change it and remove the designer tips part so your keyword is at the beginning of the post URL name: So the URL will show up on your website like: Now we have a title and the URL will have the long tail keyword that our peeps will be searching for.

7 Step #3 Outline Your Content Before I fill in the blog post, I like to outline a blog post like this

8 You can always change those H2 headlines to something better and juicier than I wrote like: My original headline was: Designer Tip #1: How To Decorate Your Bedroom Like A Hotel Change it to: How To Decorate Your Bedroom Like A Hotel Tip #1: Luxury Bedding The key is getting your keyword in there like I have colored the text in for you. It s the most important part. The headlines are there for the scanners the people who do not read everything. They scan to see if this blog post is what they are looking for, if it is they will then read it all. Then fill in the blog posts with the meat i.e. your expert designer tips and opinions.

9 Step #4 Add Media One of the most important tips I can give you is to make sure you save your image that you will be adding to your blog posts, with your long tail keyword. Lots of people get lazy and leave the name of their image as: Img2056_978.jpg That won t help you get more traffic to your website, so you need to rename your file to: How-to-decorate-your-bedroom-like-a-hotel.jpg Here s my image I will put in the blog post:

10 When I upload it to my website s media gallery I need to fill in some info: Here s what you see in the Wordpress dashboard: You have spots to fill in the Title, Caption, Alt Text, and Description along with alignment and linking options.

11 Here s how you should fill it in: Title: How To Decorate Your Bedroom Like A Hotel Caption: Leave blank unless you caption your images. If you do have captions on your images use the Title text. Alt Text: How To Decorate Your Bedroom Like A Hotel Description: Tips to learn how to decorate your bedroom like a hotel. Attachment Display Settings: Alignment: Right (Your choice) Link To: In a blog post I don t link to anything else. I use this feature when linking an image to another post or page. Size: 300 x 300 (Your choice) Then insert it into your post. Set The Featured Image Remember to also set your featured image up. I just use the image I posted in the blog post as my featured image as well. If your website theme has different dimensions and setting for the Featured image upload what the theme designer has suggested. Just make sure to have all your keyword information on that image as well. P.S. If you use the same image for your blog post and featured image, the info you just typed in stays with the image and you don t need to redo it all again.

12 Step #5 Adding Links You can see where I highlighted text of luxury bedding and clicked the button Insert/edit link. It will bring up this pop up:

13 External Links Find relevant links to things your reader s would be interested in seeing. Here I linked to Horchow s bedding page and make sure to click the box Open link in a new tab so they aren t leaving your website. If you have an affiliate account set up where you can earn commission on some luxury bedding, then link to that. Internal Links These are the link you have on your own website. Keeping with the luxury bedding link example if you already have a post on how to select luxury bedding, link to that. You want people to stay on your website as long as possible.

14 Step #6 Final Look Through The post is now done. I ve gone in and written some text to fill out the post so it has a minimum of 300 words (that should be your goal). BONUS TIP: And always add a Call To Action (CTA) at the bottom of each and every blog post and page (not shown here). You want people to contact you to work with you, so these are perfect spots to remind them with a link to your services.

15 If you have the Yoast plugin installed on your Wordpress website, this is the time you would go and check your progress and fill in the Meta Description. I have filled in the Meta description with a brief blurb that will show up under my blog post search result in a Google search. Try to put your keywords closer to the beginning of your description.

16 You ll also notice that I have a warning about my blog post title being too long. So just change that to look like: That s how you do it and your blog post is SEO optimized. This is the same process you would use for each and every page of your website as well. While this posts is good to go and SEO optimized, if you want to get even more optimized Yoast has this cool feature to help you with that. This feature will really help you get even more advanced with your SEO techniques by clicking on Page Analysis seen here:

17 Yoast has found even more ways for me to improve my post. If you feel the need to address these or the desire to learn even more about SEO, go for it. I will tell you thought that touching on the key steps I just walked you through is the most important parts you must address on each post and page of your website.
