Will and Going to GRAMMAR

Content The Simple Future uses will and be going to in order to talk about events that will be taking place in the future. Learning Outcomes Read the Simple Future tense. Learn how to use will when talking about the future. Learn when to use be going to when talking about the future. 1

Writing How do you talk about the future? What words can be used to specify that you are speaking about something taking place in the future, as opposed to the past or present? 2

Please note The Simple Future tense allows you to talk about future events and occurrences. Examples: I will help you with your homework. I am going to help you with your homework. 3

Please note Will and be going to are the two forms of the Simple Future tense. In many cases, they have the exact same or very similar meaning and either can be used. However, in some cases, the subtle differences between will and be going to can be very significant! 4

Please note Will is used when speaking about future decisions, offers, requests, threats or promises, particularly when they are spontaneous on the spot. Examples: Decisions: I think I will go to the movies tonight. Offers: I will lend you money for the tickets. 5

Examples Requests: Will you please help me wash the dishes? Threats: Settle down or I will tell your mother! Promises: I promise I will never steal again! 6

Please note Will can also be used when making quick predictions about the future. Examples: A man in a friendly, political debate says, the president will lose the next election. A doctor says, the child will probably be very tall in a few more years. 7

Will you please help me wash the dishes? The child will be very tall in a few more years. Settle down or I will tell your mother! I promise I will never steal again! What all these decisions, offers, requests, threats, promises and predictions have in common is that they have most likely been said on the spot, without a great deal of thought or consideration. I think I will go to the movies tonight. I will lend you money for the tickets. The president will surely lose the next election. 8

Please note The other Simple Future form is be going to. This form can be used to convey personal intentions or resolutions statements which have been given thought or consideration. In other words, statements using be going to have generally already been decided at some point in the past. 9

Please note The be in be going to refers to all forms of to be, such as is, am, and are. I am going to... We are going to... She is going to... You are going to... They are going to... He is going to

Examples (intentions/resolutions): When I grow up, I am going to be a millionaire! I have decided that I am going to quit smoking. She is going to take a vacation next week. We are going to drive across the country. 11

Please note Be going to is also be used to make thoughtful predictions that have some sort of evidence backing them up. Examples: The soccer team is up by 5 points with just a few minutes left. They are going to win! I heard the weather forecast on the news this morning. It is going to rain today. 12

Please note Contractions are often made when speaking with either of the Simple Future forms. will I'll = I will we'll = we will (s)he'll = (s)he will won't = will not to be going to you're going to = you are going to (s)he's going to = (s)he is going to we're going to = we are going to 13

Writing Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of will or be going to. My mom asked Grandma, (Will you/are you going to) watch over George while I run some errands today? Of course, Grandma said, I am free all day. We (will/are going to) have a lot of fun! Grandma told me she (will/is going to) take me to the fair this afternoon if I behave! I (will/am going to), I told her. I (will/am going to) go on all of the rides! 14

Writing How would you explain the subtle difference between the following two statements? We will win! We're going to win! 15

Writing How would you explain the subtle difference between the following two statements? I will go to college. I am going to go to college. 16

1. Simple Future tense used to talk about future events and occurrences 2. will 2. be going to used with decisions, offers, requests, threats and promises used with personal intentions and resolutions The Simple Future tense uses will and be going to in order to talk about the future. However, there is a subtle, yet important, distinction between the two. 17

Writing What are the key differences between the two Simple Future forms? be going to will 18

Writing will or be going to We cook a big dinner tomorrow evening. We sent out invitations to all of our friends! a) will b) are going to I have to pick up some groceries. a) will you b) are you going to The weather forecast said that it a) will b) is going to come with me? rain tomorrow. 19
