2 Mistake #1 Letting the Men Handle the Finances I know it s easier to let someone else handle the finances. You feel taken care of when someone else is watching the bank account. We have received unending messages from society that men take care of the money. Many religions tell you that men are head of the household. Some even suggest that women shouldn t be working outside of the home. But the men in your life haven t told you the real reason WHY they handle the money. It feels awesome to decide what kind of home you can afford. It feels incredible to see the numbers getting bigger in your savings account. Managing the money gives them the feeling of control. Knowledge about your money is power. And power feels great. Handling money isn t hard. It s just something to learn, like how to ride a bike. You don t ride on the first try, but with practice you get your balance, learn how to steer and ride like the wind. In our society, money is how we trade something of value. It s not a man thing. You can become part of the money conversation, and you can do it with love and compassion. Being involved with your money doesn t have to mean number crunching and boring conversations. Make it part of your every day life, like men do. Change your relationship with money. Love your money. Take back your power.

3 Mistake #2 Thinking You Have To Be Good At Math I never liked math. I was never very good at math. But I am wicked good with money. Take it from me that liking math and being good with money are not synonymous. A lot of math is about memorizing equations and theory. Not money. Money is about exchanging value. Managing your money is about priorities and aligning what you spend with what is important to you. No one can tell you that buying a latte every day is a bad idea. That s for you to decide. One person may buy a latte every day out of habit. Then they may decide instead to use their latte money to take a trip every year. This person would rather travel than have someone else fix them coffee every day. So making that change in how they spend is wonderful. And it feels wonderful. If having a latte at the local coffee shop is the way a busy woman can connect with other like-minded people, that cup of coffee is an investment in her mental health, and spending her money on lattes is a great choice. And it feels wonderful. That s what managing money is about figuring out what feels wonderful to you. It s not about math. These days, the computer will even add and subtract and multiply for you. But you have to know yourself first. THAT S what managing money is about. 3

4 Mistake #3 Trying to Fix Money Problems by Taking Action I know. It feels like you should jump into action to take control of your finances. It seems like you should hire a financial advisor or put yourself on a budget (Yikes!) or get a second job or try new bookkeeping software to fix your money problems. And all of those are good things to do, but they won t work long term unless you first fix your beliefs about money. You can t fix your underlying money issues through action. The only way you can change your relationship with money is by changing your thinking. If you use a new bookkeeping system but you still can t bring yourself to open your bills, you haven t fixed the underlying problem. If you hire a financial advisor but you still think it s too overwhelming to gather all of the receipts and numbers, that s just more money down the drain. Without fixing your money mindset, trying to white-knuckle it and stick to a budget will fail. Willpower won t change your money issues. And what you want out of life is NOT to feel restricted all the time. We all want to feel abundant and experience all the richness and depth of life. If you believe money is hard, it will be hard. If you believe money is the source of your problems, it will be the source of your problems. If you believe you are worthy of money and believe you can figure out how to have the money you want, money is easy. If you find the root cause of your money problems, you can fix the problem once and for all. If you feel confident and tell yourself the truth about your relationship with money, you will have confidence in a way that produces inspired action. Don t try to fix your money problems by taking action. Fix them by changing your thinking. The action will follow as a natural extension. 4

5 Takeaways Here s the good news: Men don t inherently know more about money. They just talk about it more with people they know. They spend a little more time fraternizing with it, getting to know their money. Women can be great at money. Yep. Because men don t always align their money with their values. They are so focused on making money that they don t always feel good about what they have to do to make the money. You can be rich and feel joy or rich and feel slightly dirty. That s one of the secrets even the men don t know. It s all about putting your values where your money is. Also, don t try to slap a Band-Aid on your financial problems through taking action. You need to first heal your thinking about money. This is soooo important. I wish someone had taught me this when I was 18. But now I know. And I want you to know too.
