3 WHAT IS RIGOR? Rigor is the expectation that students will be able to perform at high levels of cognitive complexity necessary for proficiency at each grade level. (SREB, 2010)

6 BLOOMS AND DOK CHARTS: FINDING EVIDENCE OF RIGOR Bloom s Taxonomy Webb s DOK Knowledge / Remembering The recall of specific information Recall Recall of a fact, information or procedure Comprehension / Understanding Ability to process knowledge on a low level such that knowledge can be reproduced or communicated without verbatim repetition. 16 WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE? Discuss in your small group the distinctions of each DOK level. Small Group Activity 5 minutes Compare a DOK level 1 to 2. Compare a DOK level 2 to 3. Compare a DOK level 3 to 4.

17 EXAMPLES: MATH (DOK 1) Choose a whole number between 10 and 100. Is your number even or odd? (DOK 2) List the factors of your number. How do you know these are the factors? (DOK 3) Create a poster about your number. The poster should contain all the information you have gathered about your number (prime/composite; even/odd; factors; first 5 multiples; prime factorization). Make your poster colorful and showcase your number. (DOK 4) Write a story or children s book about your number. This story should be narrative where your number discovers and learns all about itself through an adventure it encounters. If you write a children s book make sure you include colored illustrations
