3 Elf Help Quiz In Father Christmas workshop, there are many elves that help him pre p a re for Christmas Eve. Some elves look after the re i n d e e r. Some elves make the toys. Some elves load up his sleigh. Take this quiz and see if you ve got what it takes to be one of Father Christmas elves. 3

5 Deck the Halls H e re are two great ideas for making Christmas decorations. The class collection of decorations could be combined to make a Christmas display. Make a Father Christmas The following activity shows you how to make a Father Christmas from waste materials. What you need: S h o rt crisps tube with pop off lid White, pink and peach acrylic paint Medium pink pompom Two googly eyes Cotton wool balls L a rge white pompom Red felt White felt White craft glue What you do: 1. Paint outside of the crisps tube with white acrylic. 2. Paint a section on the front of the can in peach acry l i c. 3. S t retch one cotton wool ball so that it is long enough to go a round the top of the tube. 4. Glue this cotton wool approximately 1cm below the top rim of the tube. This will be Father Christmas hair. 5. Cut a piece of red felt long enough to go right ro u n d the tube and approximately 10cm wide. 6. Glue the edge of the red felt around the top of the tube. 7. Cut a strip of white felt long enough to go right ro u n d the tube and approximately 1.5 cm wide. 8. Fold this strip in half and glue it around the top of the tube, over the bottom of the red felt and slightly over the top of the cotton wool hair. 9. Fold the end of Father Christmas hat into a cone and glue into shape Glue the white pompom to the end of Father Christmas hat Use the white craft glue to attach white cotton wool balls around the tube to make Father Christmas beard and hair. Make sure you leave space for his face Dab small amounts of pink paint onto Father Christmas face to make cheeks Glue on the pink pompom for his nose Add the googly eyes. What about the science? Why is it important to reuse waste materials? The planet s re s o u rc e s a re not unlimited. Resources include things like wood to make furn i t u re and paper, metals and fossil fuels such as coal, oil gas. When we t h row rubbish away it is taken to landfill sites where it eventually rots. Landfill sites are filling up very q u i c k l y, however, and we are running out of space for our rubbish. By re-using (and also reducing and recycling) our waste we can reduce the amount that is sent to landfill. We can also re d u c e the amount of new products that need to be made. This means that the planet s natural re s o u rces will last longer, while we try and find m o re environmentally friendly a l t e rnatives. 5

6 Stained Glass Wi n d o w s In The Selfish Elf, Elvis the Elf made Rudolph s nose glow by shining diff e re n t c o l o u red lights. Trying making these stained glass windows and watch how the light changes as it passes through the diff e rent colours. What you need: C a rd b o a rd P e n c i l Black paint C o l o u red tissue paper or coloured acetate S c i s s o r s G l u e S t r i n g What you do: 1. Draw a design for your stained glass window on an A4 sized piece of c a rd b o a rd. Your design could be a typical stained glass window shape or you could use a Christmas shape, such as a t ree or bell. 2. Cut out your shape. 3. Draw shapes inside your stained glass window. These could be, for example, decorations on the tree. Make sure you leave a 1cm gap between your shapes and the edge of the w i n d o w. 4. C a refully cut out each of the shapes inside your window. You may need to ask an adult to help you with this. 5. Paint your window frame black on both sides. 6. Cut diff e rent coloured pieces of acetate or tissue paper. Make these pieces are slightly l a rger than the cut out shapes in your w i n d o w. Try to select a range of colours. 7. Glue your pieces of acetate or tissue paper to your window frame. Make sure you cover all of the cut out areas on your window. 8. P i e rce a hole through the top of your window frame. You may need to ask an adult to help you with this. 9. T h read a piece of string through the hole and tie the ends together. 10. Hang your stained glass window up against a classroom window and watch the light shine through it. 6

7 Rocket Races In The Selfish Elf, Elvis powers Father Christmas sleigh by firing it into the sky using a rocket launcher. Here is a fun activity for making balloon rockets. Pupils then get the chance to race them against each other in class. What you need: Ball of string S e l l o t a p e Drawing pins Drinking straws S c i s s o r s B a l l o o n s What you do: 1. Cut a two-metre length of string. 2. Attach the string to the wall, either using a drawing pin or by tying it around a nail. 3. Give pupils one straw and one balloon each. 4. One pupil should thread the string thro u g h their straw. 5. They should then inflate their balloon. 6. Holding the end tightly, the balloon should be sellotaped to the drinking straw. 7. A second pupil should repeat all of these steps with a second length of string. 8. Two other pupils should hold up the other ends of the string. 9. One the count of three, pupils should let go of their balloon rockets The rocket that reaches the end of the string first is the winner Pupils should repeat this pro c e d u re and compete against each other until t h e re is one overall winner. What about the science? How is the balloon pushed along the string? The air coming out of the balloon pushes the balloon f o rw a rds. There is very little friction ( rubbing force) between the straw and the string so the balloon moves quite smoothly along. Rockets work in a similar way. They carry containers that are filled with materials that produce gases when ignited. These gases are pushed out of the back of the rocket, pushing the rocket forw a rds. This is N e w t o n s third law of motion for e v e ry action there is an equal and opposite reaction. As air is forc e d b a c k w a rds out of the balloon, the balloon is pushed forw a rds. 7

8 Guess the Pre s e n t When Christmas Eve is over and the elves have finished all of their work for another year, they like to play p a rty games. One of their favourite games is guess the present. This is very easy to play and tests the elves knowledge of materials. You can all pretend to be elves and play guess the p resent too. What you need: A large shoebox with lid, all painted black S c i s s o r s S e l l o t a p e A variety of interesting and/or seasonal objects Possible objects include: P a rcel bows C o n k e r s Ta n g e r i n e s Wrapping paper C o a l What to do: 1. Cut a hole in one of the short sides of the shoebox. It should be just big enough to fit a hand through. 2. Sellotape the lid to the box. 3. Place a random item into the shoebox. 4. Ask pupils to take it in turns to put their hand into the box and work out what the item is just by using their sense of touch. 5. This can be set up as a team game. Divide the class into two teams. Players f rom each team take it in turns to guess the item in the box. Corre c t answers earn the team one point. 6. As an alternative, two shoeboxes could be set up one for each team. One player from each team race against each other. The first one to guess the item in the box earns a point for their team. 8
