4 R2-D2 SolidWorks Model Mike Haftl For my Solid Works Personal Project I decided to make a model of the R2-D2 robot from Star Wars. The Star Wars movie series was one of my favorite movie series to watch growing up. Now that they are making more movies to the series again my interest is back. Because of this I decided to make one of the most famous characters from the movie series, R2-D2. R2-D2 is a cylinder shaped robot with a half of a sphere for his head. He also has two legs that go up close to his head and this is how he moves. He has many buttons and panels all over his head and body. His head also has a projector/lens, a red light, and an eye circle. This project was easily the hardest project I have done in SolidWorks. It took a lot of time, effort, and practice in order to make R2-D2 but I am very happy with the results. I had to use many features in solid works in order to make R2-D2. To start I used the revolve tool in order to make the body and head. I also used the extrude feature in order to add a little more to the body after I found it not very proportional to the head. I then drew sketches on the front plane on the side of the head in order to get the details of the head correct. From these sketches, I would revolve them around a center line in the middle of the head. I would then wrap it around the head as many times as I would want with the circular pattern feature. This feature was new for me and very interesting to use. I had to use this feature because I could not sketch directly onto the head because of the sphere shape. To change the location of the sketches I would use the reference geometry tool to make new planes at angles along the side of the head and then I would repeat the steps I stated before by using the revolve and circular pattern features. I also used the cut extrude tool to add more detail onto the small parts of the head like the eye circle and the lens. The body was a little bit easier to make then the head. Because the body was mostly just a cylinder I was able to use the wrap sketch tool. For this I would make planes at angles over the curved surface of the cylinder. I would then draw what I wanted to make and then use the wrap sketch feature. From this I would wrap my design onto the body of R2-D2. This is how I made most of the detail on the body. I also used extrude and extrude cut to make some of the details. The legs were the easiest part of the project. I used the loft feature in order to make the feet of the legs. I then extruded rectangles and squares up from that in order to make the rest of the body. I made a new plane a couple times to add the shoulder of the legs/arms. I also used extrude cut to make the holes in the arms. I also used the revolve tool to make the grey cylinder going up the side of his leg. Overall I learned a lot from this project and used many features in order to create R2-D2. The hardest part of this model to complete was definitely the head. Because of its sphere shape, I could not sketch directly on to the face of the sphere. I also could not use the wrap sketch tool because of the sphere. Because of this I had to make planes on the angles of the sphere and then sketch and revolve it around the head. I would then need to use the circular pattern tool in order to get the sketches to go as far as I wanted around the head of R2-D2. From this struggle however with dealing with curved faces I was able to learn a lot. Haftl 4

5 Making this R2-D2 model in SolidWorks, I learned so many new techniques and features. To start I learned how to revolve a revolve around a surface. This is what I did to make the details on the head of the model. I had to make a line of revolution in the center of his head and then use the revolve feature and click that mid line as what I want to revolve around. I also learned the circular pattern tool. This is what let me repeat certain parts and wrap them around his head. This saved me time and made sure the parts were exactly the same. Another technique I learned was making planes in more precise locations. I learned how to put the planes at angles and along surfaces by clicking certain edges to help constrain the plane to a more specific location. The last thing I learned was the wrap sketch tool. I did this for the body detail. The wrap sketch tool made life so much easier. It allowed me to make a plane close enough to the curved surface of the cylinder body, I would then wrap the sketch and it would go onto the curved surface. This allowed it so I could have great detail and accuracy. I also used a loft cut for the bottom left square hole on the body of R2-D2 so that it could go at an angle. I also used the fillet feature to round off some corners on his body and on the legs. This project has taught me so much about SolidWorks. Description of Images: Figure 1- This picture shows the front view of the R2-D2 model. From this angle you can see how wide and tall he is and all of the detail put into the body and head of the model. Figure 2- This picture is the other isometric view. From this angle you can see almost every detail. In this picture you can see the details of the head and body of R2-D2 and how they wrap around the curved surface. From this angel we can also see the legs of R2-D2 and the details and the different surfaces of the legs. Figure 3- This picture is a close up of an isometric view of the head of R2-D2. This picture is important because it shows all the specific and small details on R2-D2 s head. From this image we can see the detail of the lens, eye circle, the wrapping square patterns, and the details of the shoulder of the legs. This image shows the detail up close. Figure 4- This picture is a front top view of the model. This shows the depth of R2-D2 and the spherical shape of the head and body. It also shows the antenna in the back and more detail and how it is all extruded of the body. Overall: Overall R2-D2 is a half sphere on top of a cylinder as you can see from the images. I then added the different specific buttons and panels onto the body and head of him. I made the colors accurate to the ones in the movie and based the panels and buttons off of this too. I made the legs by lofting and extruding up word and then filleted the sides to give them curved corners. This is similar to the movie version of R2 also. This project has taught me a lot. Working with SolidWorks has taught me much more than just the program itself. From solid works I learned about determination, problem solving, patience, and creativity. All of these skills are what helped me complete this final personal project and I am very happy with the results. Haftl 5
