2 I carry a basic sketching kit everywhere I go.

3 The 5 minute rule If I m sitting still for more than 5 minutes I have to do a sketch of whatever s in front of me. It doesn t matter if the subject gets up and leaves before I finish the sketch.

4 This means I get a lot of sketching done on buses and BART.

5 Long airplane trips pass quickly.

6 Sketching can make a long wait in the doctor s office more bearable.

7 My basic sketching kit

8 Waterbrush

9 My favorite waterbrushes Kuretake Flat head Pentel Aquash Large Spray/mist bottle for refilling waterbrushes (also good for wetting paper and paints)

16 Labels on the palette help me remember what colors I put where.

17 Waterbrushes filled with ink Inks can be diluted with water to make shades of gray. Acrylic inks are waterproof, fast-drying and don t clog the brushes.

19 Pencils I sometimes block in the overall composition with a light-colored water soluble pencil. With a mechanical pencil I don t need to carry a pencil sharpener. Soft leads B or 2B give darker, stronger lines.
