Section I - Introduction 1.0 Overview of Program Review The Statewide Program Review System recognizes that individual colleges have the primary responsibility to evaluate instructional programs, to make decisions about improvement and continuation, assure that program review results are considered in campus planning and budget development, and to report results to the Illinois Community College Board. The purposes of Statewide Program Review are: To support campus-level planning and decision-making related to: o Assuring the continuing need and improving the quality and cost effectiveness of instructional programs; o Assessing, improving, and updating programs on a regular basis; o Discontinuing programs when there is no longer sufficient demand, quality cannot be maintained at an acceptable level, or they are no longer cost effective. To demonstrate the accountability of the community college system in maintaining high quality, cost-effective programs those are responsive to the needs of students, businesses and industries in Illinois. To identify best practices, exemplary innovations, and program issues that need to be addressed at the state-level by the ICCB. The System is designed so that the Illinois Community College Board can fulfill its responsibility to assure that each college has an appropriate review process, to coordinate and report on accountability efforts, to support local program review processes, to collect and disseminate information about best practices, and to identify and develop solutions for statewide programmatic issues. Advisory Committee Involvement, Activities, and Recommendations The following is the minutes of the CAD Advisory Committee meetings and the joint meetings between the Computer Graphic Design Advisory Committee and the CAD Advisory Committee meetings for the past three years. COMPUTER-AIDED DRAFTING/COMPUTER GRAPHIC DESIGN ADVISORY COMMITTEE THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 2010 Present: Dawn Bennett KCC, Administrative Assistant Greg Bennett Superior Silk Screening John Bordeau KCC, CAD/CGD Program Coordinator Paul Carlson KCC, Business/Technology Division Chair Shelly Granger KCC, Administrative Assistant Gary Honzik Kankakee County Highway Department David Knudson Kankakee High School Instructor/KCC Adjunct Faculty Chad Milliron CGD Student Portfolio Development Review Dwayne Musick KCC, Student Services Adviser Welcome and Introductions A dinner meeting of the Computer-Aided Drafting/Computer Graphic Design Advisory Committee was held on April 22, 2010, at 5:30 p.m. in room D152 of the Workforce Development Center at KCC. After general welcomes to all in attendance, John Bordeau brought the meeting to order. Approval of Minutes John asked committee members to review the minutes from the Fall 2009 Advisory Committee Meeting. With no changes noted, the minutes were approved by consensus. Follow-up Report New trends that were discussed at the last meeting included a recommendation by the Advisory Committee to purchase a Rapid Prototyper. John informed the Committee that this has been purchased and is currently being used in the CAD program. 26
Paul Brown had recommended that CAD be introduced into the Technical Drafting course. John has given his Technical Drafting students a brief overview of CAD and students seem very encouraged by this introduction. Portfolio Development Student Review Chad Milliron Computer Graphic Design student, Chad Milliron, gave a presentation of work from his Portfolio Development class as was required by the course description. Chad shared his portfolio which included his resume, business card, examples of pictures, photos and projects from various classes he has taken in the program. He also showed a web site example from Taylor Chrysler Plymouth Dodge that he helped design. The portfolio will be reviewed by members of the Committee and opinions will be given to his instructor, David Knudson. Program Updates 1. Enrollment data John reported that there are approximately 4 students graduating from the CAD Associate Degree program each year and 0-1 students graduating from the CGD. Enrollment trends especially in Technical Drafting are up. CAD I numbers are holding steady. CAD II, CAD III and Technical Illustration are off by attrition from CAD I. In Computer Graphic Design, Digital Photography, Web Design and Photoshop classes, numbers are up. Enrollment in the other classes remain low. 2. Student activities and retention efforts Activities - none at this time Retention efforts CAD and CGD class offerings are advertized on a PowerPoint in every CAD class from weeks Student success A. Course retention for the following classes was reviewed: DRFT 1154 Tech Drafting 31 students started 28 will finish DRFT 2124 CAD Ii 7 students started 6 will finish DRFT 2164 Tech Illustration 8 students started 7 will finish DSGN 1113 Dig. Student graduates John predicts that 3 students will graduate from CAD and 1 student will graduate from CGD this spring. Paul Carlson added that there are few completers, but many are taking classes for personal fulfillment or for current jobs. 4. Miscellaneous A. Articulation activities Articulation agreements between KCC and Illinois State University and Governors State University are in place. The ISU agreement is more technology based while the GSU agreement is more business degree based. 27
B. Dual Credit activities Dual Credit for the CAD program is in place with the Kankakee Area Career Center. Students taking CAD I and CAD II at KACC receive credit for DRFT 1154 Technical Drafting & Print Reading and DRFT 2114 CAD I. The problem is that KACC is teaching some architecture content in place of Technical Drafting and Print Reading and CAD content. If their students take only one year at the Career Center, they are not ready for CAD I when they start at KCC and they will only receive credit for DRFT John and Paul will make an appointment to talk to Don Fay, Director and Bosa Goodale, Principal of the Kankakee Area Career Center about this problem. There are currently no Dual Credit arrangements involving the CGD program. David Knudson stated that Kankakee High School would be interested in talking about Dual Credit. John and Paul will talk to Kankakee High School to see if this can be set up. C. Upcoming faculty needs John stated that there are no upcoming faculty needs at present. For Spring 2010, he taught all CAD classes except Technical Illustration. That class was taught by Hal Berg. In the CGD classes, John recommended that DSGN 1113 Digital Photography, DSGN 1123 Intro to Web Design, and DSGN 1213 Photoshop Digital Imagining be offered every semester due to demand. David proposed offering some classes back to back on the same day if it would become necessary. D. 29 E. Curriculum revision In DRFT Technical Illustration, the prerequisite was changed from DRFT 2134 CAD III to DRFT 2124 CAD II. In DRFT 2233 CAD Internship, the prerequisite is being changed from DRFT 1154, DRFT 2114, DRFT 2124, DRFT 2134 and DRFT 2414 to completion of any four DRFT classes and permission of the instructor. ARTS Computer Art was replaced with ARTS Photography II in the catalog incorrectly. ELTR Microcomputer Fundamentals was replaced by COSC Introduction to Information Processing. All changes to curriculum must be approved by the Curriculum & Academic Standards Committee. John would like to change the name Document Design to Publications in the future. The name of the course has been misleading to some students. John asked members of the Committee to him with ideas for a new name. Committee members suggested Professional Layout and Design. F. Program evaluation The CAD Program Review was completed in The next review will be in The CGD Program Review was completed in The next review will be in G. Work based learning experiences New Business John explained that CAD student, Tim Goodman, is providing 3D drawings of the photovoltaic trainer to the National Science Foundation using Inventor. CAD student, Katrina Vercellono, is providing 3D modeling and animation of a Kankakee doctors new office building that is being designed by RGB Architectural Group. Chad Milliron has an internship with Taylor Chrysler Plymouth Dodge auto dealership for graphic design. 1. Emerging technology Revit architecture s vertical software product. KCC presently uses AutoCAD as the architecture vertical software product. Steve Kelley suggests that the KCC program needs this software. Solid Works mechanical s vertical software product. KCC is using Inventor as the mechanical vertical software product. Rapid Prototyping John has purchased a low-end 3D printer for the programs. 29
Digital Prototyping changes the traditional product development cycle from design>build>test>fix to design>analyze>test>build. Instead of needing to build multiple physical prototypes and then testing them to see if they ll work, companies can conduct testing digitally throughout the process by using Digital Prototyping, reducing the number of physical prototypes needed to validate the design. The hope is to tie this in with Inventor. 3D Scanner/Digitizing 3D digitizing captures the physical shape of an object and converts it into a digital format. Adobe Creative Suites Version 5 has been released, but textbooks are not available yet. Digital Modeling and Rendering is an industry-standard software application that would allow students to create 3-D computer models of their designs and learn how to apply surface textures, lighting effects, and modeling techniques. Sustainable Design Systems introduces students to alternative design systems that are based on a philosophical shift toward Earth and environmental awareness. 3-D Storytelling and Game Design is one of the newest upcoming trend. 2. Employment trends Revit drafters and solid work drafters are most needed by employers. In Computer Graphic Design, internet technologies are in demand. Print media demand is down. 3. Program/course assessment John distributed handouts with program assessment for the CAD and CGD program. John explained that assessment is required by the state to show that students are achieving the outcomes that we ve intended with each course. The outcomes that he will be reviewing this year is: Develop complete architectural plans using common architectural standard graphic practices with consideration for aesthetics, cost, construction methods, and building codes. This outcome will be assessed in DRFT 2414 Architectural Drafting. In CGD, the outcome being assessed is Design, build and maintain a web page/site which is being done in DSGN 1123 Introduction to Web Design. Roger Ehmpke is measuring scores from the 2 web site classes and hoping for 70% or better from the students enrolled. 4. Recruitment activities John has distributed approximately 500 CAD curriculum guides to area high schools. He has also participated in the Undecided Seniors Day for area high school seniors. He enrolled three students from his presentation on that day into CGD and feels that this may have been his presentation of examples of student s work. 5. Equipment needs A 3D scanner and Revit software are on the wish list for next year. ITS will be upgrading the CGD hardware in May or June They are to replace 12 student stations and one instructor station with upgraded towers, monitors, keyboards, mice and OS. John has asked that two of the old towers be moved to the V126 computer lab so that students can use them when the V107 classroom is busy. This classroom is also being upgraded to Creative Suites 4 in May or June. A new large LCD projection screen is on the wish list for next year. 6. Faculty development Faculty development will be hard to come by with budget constraints in the upcoming school year. John has submitted a Speakers Call for Presentation proposal to Autodesk University 2010 on topics that include 3D modeling, photorealistic rendering, animation, rapid prototyping, and engineering graphics curriculum. If he is accepted, he might be able to attend the conference. 7. Merging of the CAD and CGD Programs John has received a request from KCC administration to merge the CAD and the Computer Graphic Design programs with the intention of boosting enrollment in both programs. He explained that the CGD program has had 4 graduates in the last 5 years. The CAD program has approximately 4 graduates per year. By offering the more popular classes more frequently and the non-popular classes less frequently, it would provide students with a broader program base that would include more computer/technology/software/internet-type classes. John provided the Committee with a draft of a plan to merge the two programs under the new name of Computer Graphics Technology. The new program is based on programs offered at 30
Purdue and Illinois State Universities. Eleven core courses are required and then the student chooses one of two specializations Computer Aided Drafting Specialization or Computer Graphic Design Specialization. Also included in the program are a three credit hour Technical Elective and the standard Technology Division 16 credit hours of General Education. Advice or ideas from the CAD/CGD Advisory Committee: David Knudson would like to see Power Point and Word replaced with Basic Drawing in the core classes. Greg Bennett thought that the change would offer students a more diverse range of classes making them a more valuable employee. Dwayne Musick stated that the changes would help support enrollment numbers in both programs and appeared to be a well-rounded curriculum. John s possible concerns included lack of structured computer programming; lack of CAD customization and programming; lack of marketing, game design, and virtual moviemaking. He also wondered if Portfolio Review or Internships needed to be included or could be taken as an elective or even offered simply as a one-credit hour capstone class. The suggestions will be discussed further before a decision is made. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, John Bordeau 31

After general welcomes and introductions by all in attendance, John Bordeau brought the meeting to order. B. Approval of Minutes John asked committee members to review the minutes from the Spring 2010 Advisory Committee meeting. With no changes noted, Greg Bennett moved to accept the minutes, and Bob Bohlmann seconded the motion. II. Follow-up Report John stated that a primary comment from previous meetings is a request for shorter meetings. The second issue is changing the time of the meeting. In answer to these requests, John has attempted to trim down the meeting time and changed to a luncheon meeting for the Fall meeting. He will hold one 32
meeting for each program in the Spring. As an update, he added that software has been added to both the CAD and CGD labs. AutoCAD 2010 has been added to the CAD lab and Adobe Creative Suites 4 to the CGD lab. The programs have not been merged as was talked about at the Spring 2010 meeting. III. Program Update A. Enrollment data John reported that enrollment trends especially in CAD I are up. He is running two sections of CAD I for the first time in years. With an increase in CAD I numbers, this should strengthen the numbers in the other CAD classes down the road. In Computer Graphics, enrollment is the highest that it has ever been. Two years ago, Digital Photography was run once a year. Now, four classes are being offered every year. Photoshop was being run once a year and it is now running three times a year. Web Design was once a year, but now is being run twice a year. The enrollment trend remains strong in the other CGD classes as well. Many students are non-degree seeking students though and are only taking one class, so they re not completing degrees. B. Student activities and retention efforts Dwayne Musick and John are tracking students in CGD and CAD classes to encourage them to go into the next sequence of courses. C. Student success 1. Course retention Most students in CAD are sticking with their classes and continuing on in the program. In CGD, students are completing their semesters and being encouraged to continue with other classes. 2. Graduates There may be 4-5 graduates from the CAD program. There should be one graduate from the CGD program. D. Articulation Articulation agreements between KCC and Illinois State University and Governors State University are in place for their Computer-Aided Drafting program. There are no articulation agreements currently for the Computer Graphic Design program. E. Dual credit Dual Credit for the CAD program is in place with the Kankakee Area Career Center. Students taking Drafting/CAD I and Drafting/CAD II at KACC receive credit for DRFT 1154 Technical Drafting & Print Reading and DRFT 2114 CAD I. There is no dual credit currently in place for the Computer Graphic Design program. F. Upcoming faculty needs For the CAD program, Hal Berg and Steve Kelley are assisting with classes. The CGD program, there are more classes scheduled for Spring 2011 than have ever been offered. John has Joshua Hugo, Nancy Burgan, Wayne Baranowski, Roger Ehmpke and Lori LaMore covering those classes. G. Current offerings Spring classes being offered include: DRFT 1154 Technical Drafting & Print Reading (3 classes) DRFT 2124 CAD II (2 classes) DRFT 2164 Technical Illustration DSGN 1113 Digital Photography (2 classes) DSGN 1123 Intro to Web Design 33
IV. DSGN 1133 Package Design DSGN 1213 Photoshop Digital Imaging (2 classes) DSGN 1223 Digital Motion Graphics DSGN 1233 Document Design DSGN 1253 Portfolio Development H. Curriculum revision 1. Two changes have been made to the CAD program. John has added Digital Photography and Web Design. The two classes that were removed were technical electives. 2. In the CGD program, the technical core remained the same, but the student has to now choose from a list of 15 specific electives. I. External learning experiences No external learning experiences are currently offered in the CAD or CGD programs. J. Program evaluation/accreditation The next 5-year Program Review will be due in 2013 for the CAD program and in 2014 for the CGD program. K. Work based learning experiences 1. On the CAD side, one student got hired by IDOT as a technician and one is working for TKA, an architectural firm in Chicago. Both students are trying to finish their degrees while they are working. In CGD, one student has already gained employment. New Business A. Emerging Technology/trends in the business 1. Revit, architecture s vertical software product, has been approved for purchase for the CAD program. John is hoping that it will be installed during summer D Studio Max has also been approved for purchase. Rapid prototyping is being used in CAD III classes for 3-D conceptual modeling. Students have designed chess sets and really enjoy the workings of the rapid prototyping system. 2. In Computer Graphics, John has Adobe Creative Suites Version 5 that should also be installed over the summer. The hardware has also been updated in the lab with 27 monitors. Digital modeling and rendering is popular with the students as well. Google Sketch Up is free to download at google.com. This allows students to design in 3-D with very little instruction. B. Employment trends In CAD, Revit drafters and Solid Work drafters are most needed by employers. In Computer Graphic Design, internet technologies are in demand. The economy is still down though so employment trends will remain slow until this improves. C. Program/Course assessment John explained that the State of Illinois requires assessment of courses and programs. Assessment shows if we are teaching the outcomes that we re asking students to learn. John distributed graphs of the outcomes for both 34
the CAD and CGD programs for advisory members. D. Recruitment activities John has distributed 500 curriculum guides to high school students. He has also shown the Rapid Prototyper in CAD and shown portfolios in CGD to potential students. He stated that it is helpful for students to actually see what the programs have to offer them. E. Equipment needs 1. CAD: The wish list for the CAD program is a 3-D scanner. Also an LCD projector is getting outdated for animations and photo realistic renderings. 2. CGD: A projection screen is needed in the CGD lab. At some point, a color printer will also be needed. The one being used is outdated. John would also like to see the room itself be updated with student graphics on the walls. F. Faculty development John will be a speaker at AutoDesk University in November He will be speaking about: 1. Introduction to 3D Modeling in AutoCAD 2. Cameras, Walkthroughs, and Flybys in 3D using AutoCAD 3. What We Really Should Be Teaching in Engineering Graphics John is also taking several classes while he s there. He recently attended the IDEA Conference at Illinois State University. G. Contributions from industry John asked that anyone with equipment to contribute to either program contact him. He will be happy to accept any donations. H. Feedback 1. DRFT 2164 Technical Illustration John explained that enrollment in this class has been low. He asked committee members for suggestions that would make it more marketable. Suggestions for name changes were Technical Illustration with Inventor or Mechanical Design with Inventor. The course is called Geometric Modeling at other schools. It was also noted that the description of the course included that this is an introduction to Inventor. 2. DRFT 2414 Architectural Drafting The Committee again suggested that the course description include that 35
this is an introduction to Revit. It was also mentioned that BIM, Building Information Modeling, is a popular catch phrase that would be good to include in the description. A suggestion for a name change was Architectural Drafting with Revit. 3. DSGN 1253 Portfolio Development John explained that the enrollment in Portfolio Development has only been one student every semester that it has been offered. He suggested dropping the course and replacing it with Introduction to Apple Computing (1 credit hour) and Google Sketch Up (2 credit hours). A Committee member suggested including portfolio development in each of the Computer Graphic classes so that the student ends up with a portfolio at the end of the program. 4. DSGN 1233 Document Design The Document Design class has only experienced spotty enrollment. Committee members stated that the title of the class really doesn t explain what the class is about. One suggestion for a new name was Advertising Publications. The description should also mention exactly what is created in the class. Members did not feel that the course should be dropped altogether. V. Summary of decisions, recommendations and timelines for action. VI. VII. John will review all comments and feedback from the meeting. He asked members to him or call him with any ideas or suggestions regarding improvements for the program. Adjournment There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:03 p.m. Vendor Demonstration John Heitman of JBH Technologies, Inc. gave a demonstration on 3D scanning. Respectfully Submitted, John Bordeau 36
COMPUTER-AIDED DRAFTING ADVISORY COMMITTEE Thursday, May 5, 2011 Present: Dawn Bennett KCC, Administrative Assistant Bob Bohlmann RGB Architectural Group, Inc. John Bordeau KCC, CAD/CGD Program Coordinator Paul Carlson KCC, Business/Technology Division Chair Frank Condon Retired Engineer Gary Honzik Kankakee County Highway Department Dwayne Musick KCC, Student Services Adviser Welcome and Introductions A dinner meeting of the Computer-Aided Drafting Advisory Committee was held on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. in room D300 of the Workforce Development Center at KCC. After general welcomes to all in attendance, John Bordeau brought the meeting to order. Approval of Minutes John asked committee members to review the minutes from the Fall 2010 Joint Advisory Committee Meeting. With no changes noted, Bob Bohlmann moved to accept the minutes, and Frank Condon seconded the motion. Follow-up Report New trends that were discussed at the last meeting included a change in the structure of the advisory meetings. There will be one CAD advisory meeting held in the spring and one Joint CAD and Computer Graphic Design advisory meeting held in the fall. These meetings can be expected to be shorter in length ranging from 1 to 1.5 hours. There have been some rumors that the CAD and CGD programs have been merged. This is not the case. The two programs are very separate from each other and continue to run as two separate programs. New textbooks have been or will be introduced into the program. These textbooks include AutoCAD and Its Applications 2010 Basic, AutoCAD and Its Applications 2010 Advanced, Inventor, and Revit. 37
Program Updates 5. Enrollment data Enrollment trends especially in Technical Drafting are up. CAD I numbers are also up with two sections being offered this semester. CAD II and CAD III remain steady. Technical Illustration and Architectural Drafting have a trend of not filling up as students usually only take one course at a time. 6. Student activities and retention efforts Activities - Prospective 2011 graduates are underway in the interviewing process as well as searching for internship sites. Some employers are searching for summer CAD students. Retention efforts CAD and CGD class offerings are advertized on a PowerPoint in every CAD class from weeks Dwayne Musick has done in class advisement for program students. Students really seem to like this as it allows them to ask more questions and get more information. 7. Student success C. Course retention for the following classes was reviewed: DRFT 1154 Technical Drafting 37 students started 33 will finish DRFT 2124 CAD II 21 students started 16 will finish D. Student graduates John predicts that six students will graduate from CAD this spring. 8. Miscellaneous C. Articulation activities Articulation agreements between KCC and Illinois State University and Governors State University are in place. The ISU agreement is more technology based while the GSU agreement is more business degree based. John has visited ISU to discuss the in-formal articulation for KCC CAD to ISU Engineering Technology or Graphic Communications. D. Dual Credit activities Dual Credit for the CAD program is in place with the Kankakee Area Career Center. Students taking CAD I and CAD II at KACC receive credit for DRFT 1154 Technical Drafting & Print Reading and DRFT 2114 CAD I. C. Upcoming faculty needs John stated that there are no upcoming faculty needs at present. For Spring 2011, he taught all CAD classes except Technical Illustration, which was taught by Hal Berg. John is scheduled to teach all CAD courses for the Fall D. Curriculum offerings Fall 2011 DRFT 1154 Technical Drafting Wed. 10: 30am DRFT 2114 CAD I Tues. 5:30pm DRFT 2134 CAD III Wed. 5:30pm DRFT 2414 Architectural Drafting Mon. 5:30pm E. Curriculum revision semester. The internship experience has been removed from the CAD curriculum. internship experience, students must complete 1-3 the prefixes AIRC, AUTO, F. External learning experiences Instead of the courses of technical electives. Any course from CNST, COSC, DSGN, ELTR, MCHN and WELD may be selected.
John reported that there are no external learning experience being offered at this time. F. Program evaluation/accreditation The CAD Program Review was completed in The next review will be in G. Work based learning experiences John reported that there are no work based learning experiences at this time. New Business 8. Emerging technology Revit architecture s vertical software product. KCC presently uses AutoCAD as the architecture vertical software product. The CAD program received a Perkin s grant to purchase this software this spring. The 2012 version software is to be installed during the summer break. 3D Studio Max animation and rendering software product. The CAD program received a Perkin s grant to purchase this software this spring. The 2012 version software is to be installed during the summer break. 3D Scanning/Digitizing i.e. reverse engineering. This is something that John wishes the program had and hopes to be able to purchase in the coming years. 3D digitizing captures the physical shape of an object and converts it into a digital format. Photofly This product allows you to create 3D models from photographs using the web. Using a standard digital camera this product allows you to take many digital pictures of one room, for example, then upload them to Photofly and the software builds a 3D model based on the pictures you took. John is hoping to work this into the CAD III course. This product is not on the market for sale or purchase yet. Google SketchUp 8 This software is intuitive, fun, and free for anyone to use, located centrally through the Internet. John introduced this to his students this semester for extra credit and they really enjoyed all the things they could do with it. It is becoming very popular in all different occupational roles. Models are available online for free and can be made rendering just about anything. 9. Employment trends Revit drafters and solid work drafters are in demand by employers. Otherwise, a down market, it is starting to show some improvement. 10. Program/course assessment John distributed handouts with program assessment for the CAD and CGD program. John explained that assessment is required by the state to show that students are achieving the outcomes that we ve intended with each course. The outcomes that he will be reviewing this year is: Demonstrate knowledge of drafting conventions including: symbols, linetypes, lineweights, and dimension styles as applicable to mechanical and architectural drafting. This outcome will be assessed in Technical Drafting & Print Reading, CAD I, and CAD II. Syllabus for each course lists the goals that the students are expected to accomplish. Each course is assessed on how well the students are able to demonstrate their knowledge in regards to the goals that are listed on that course s syllabus. 11. Recruitment activities Tri-Point High School recently participated in an engineering contest in which John assisted the students by making a rapid prototyping model of a military aircraft wing. The team went on to place first at the state level and fifth at the national level. 39
