Create a new drawing: click the Application Menu Click New / Drawing and select the acad.dwt template. in the upper left corner of the screen. Step 4. Save this new drawing as yournamelesson1.dwg. dwg is a drawing file extension. Step 5. Find the following menus or features on your AutoCAD screen, as shown below. The view shown below is the 2D Drafting & Annotation workspace. Tabs Application Menu Ribbon Info Center Mouse Cursor User Coordinate System (UCS icon) Command Line Snap, Grid, Drawing Tools Icons Workspace Switching Coordinate Display 1
CHAPTER 1 LINES & ESSENTIAL TOOLS Step 6. Step 7. Move your cursor and watch the numbers in the lower left hand corner of the screen change accordingly. The Coordinate Display indicates the cursor s position in the Cartesian coordinate system (x,y,z). If desired, turn the GRIDLINES OFF by clicking on the Grid Display icon at the bottom left of your screen. Step 8. If desired, change the background color of your drawing space from black to white. With your cursor on the main drawing model space, right click and select Options. Select the Display tab and click on the Colors button. Select white in the top right hand corner of the next window and select Apply & Close. Your main drawing model space should be white now. Step 9. Let s draw some lines. Select Line from the Home tab. Click anywhere on the screen and draw 3 or 4 connected line segments. Type C for Close to connect the last line segment to the first line starting point. 2
Step 10. Let s zoom! Type z and you will see z in the command line. Hit enter and you will see: [ All / Center / Dynamic / Extents / Previous / Scale / Window / Object ]. Type any of the CAPITAL letters (shortcuts) to select the type of zooming command. Experiment with the different zooming commands to see how they work. Step 11. Click on the Snap Mode button next to the Grid Display button. Turn the Snap feature ON or OFF and experiment with the cursor and coordinate display. Step 12. Absolute coordinates and #: Select Line and then type #5,5 to draw any line from the absolute point 5,5. Step 13. Relative coordinates Select Line and then to draw another line 5 right, 5 up relative to the first line. Step 14. Direct Distance Entry: draw a line and enter in a length, then hit return to draw an exact length line. Step 15. Press the Spacebar to repeat the last command. Undo / Erase. Ortho Mode. Step 16. Add text. Click on Multiline Text or Single Line Text to add your name to your drawing. Step 17. Print your drawing (black and white is fine) CHAPTER 2 CIRCLES & DRAWING AIDS Step 1. Step 2. Type Units in the Command Line. Choose decimal with 0.00 precision. On the Home tab, select Circle, Radius and click anywhere on your model space. Drag your cursor/mouse outward to see the circle expand. Type in any number for the radius to specify an exact size circle. Experiment with the other Circle options and Lines to draw an interesting face (below). 3
Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Selection by Window left to right. Only objects completely inside the selection window are selected. Erase the inner pupil in the eye of your face drawing. Selection by Crossing Window right to left. Any objects touched by the selection window are selected. Erase one of the eyes in your face drawing. Single-Point Object Snap pinpoints exact locations on objects to increase accuracy and drawing efficiency. Draw a new circle. Draw a new line to the center of the circle by using right click on your mouse and, at the same time, hold down the Ctrl key. Select center of circle. Your drawing may look like this: Draw line to center of circle using single-point object snap. Start a new line here. Step 6. Draw a rectangle using the rectangle command around your circle. Pick a starting point, then type d for dimensions, and specify exact length and width. Click to accept the orientation. CHAPTER 3 LAYERS, COLORS & LINETYPES Step 1. Open the Layer Properties Manager Palette - Layers are like transparencies that can be added and removed from the main drawing. 4
Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Step 6. Step 7. Step 8. Select the Layer Properties tool from the ribbon to open the Layer Properties Manager window. Add a new layer and name it Center. Change its color to Green. Click on Continuous under Linetype and select Load. Scroll down to CENTER, select Center and select OK to make the Center layer a CENTER linetype. Click on Default under Lineweight and select 0.3mm lineweight. Add a new layer named Hidden. Change its color to Red. Change its Linetype to HIDDEN by selecting LOAD and then HIDDEN. Change lineweight to Default lineweight. Add a new layer named Text. Change its color to Blue, continuous linetype, default lineweight. Add a new layer named Dim. Change its color to Magenta, continuous linetype, default lineweight. Close the Layer Properties Manager window. Save this drawing as your name_template.dwt to either your COE Desktop or a USB flashdrive. You are saving this template file so that you may use it for future drawings and homework assignments in this course. Change the current layer by selecting any new layer from the pulldown menu in the ribbon. Draw a random line in the new layer, noting its color and lineweight. Repeat for all layers in order to see lines drawn in each different layer by color. You will have a hidden line, a centerline, text, and something in the dimension layer. Step 9. Change the Linetype Scale by typing ltscale in the Command Line. Default is 1.0. Change to 5.0 and then change ltscale to 0.5. Observe what happens to the centerlines and hidden lines in that the size of the dashed lines gets larger with a scale factor larger than 1.0 and smaller with a scale factor smaller than 1.0. Step 10. Draw a new rectangle. Select the Fillet command. Specify the fillet radius by typing R for radius and then type in a number. Then type P for polyline and select the rectangle. Step 11. Draw a new rectangle. Select the Chamfer command. Specify the chamfer distance by typing D for distance and then type in 2 numbers. Then type P for polyline and select the rectangle. 5
