1 Lesson 1: Introduction to The Vocation Tree SWBAT describe The Vocation Tree both general content and details. SWBAT define symbol and give examples. Materials The Vocation Tree poster, to remain hanging for entire unit; student copies of Warm-up, Symbols, and Closure sheets Warm-up ~3 minutes Look closely at this painting hanging in front of the class, and fill out your sheets that say When I look closely. Sequence 1: Observations of the painting overall ~20-22 minutes Keep looking closely at the painting while we talk about it. Raise your hand if you would like to tell us something you see [then notice, think, wonder]. Follow up with What makes you say that? or What part of the painting made you think that? Continue with What else?. Do not give much if any input at this point. Let the students lead. Transition to Sequence 2 using a student s observation, such as Remember that you noticed the dove? What does a dove represent sometimes?... Yes, a dove can symbolize the Holy Spirit Sequence 2: Symbols ~8-10 minutes Introduce or review the meaning of the word symbol, as shown on the Symbols sheets. Write definition on board. Discuss examples of common symbols, using student-generated examples on the board that the students copy onto their own paper and/or using the Symbols worksheet provided. Take a look back up at the painting again. Many things in this painting are symbols [point to definition/examples on board]. Raise your hand if you think you ve figured out a symbol in this painting. Discuss possible symbols for a few minutes it is ok if the students are incorrect. Closure ~5 minutes We will be talking about the symbols in this painting over the next couple weeks. This painting is called The Vocation Tree the symbols in it will help us learn about vocations [write vocations on the board]. We ll talk more about this word, vocations, in a couple days. For now, let s talk about what we learned today What is this painting called?... What is a symbol?... Now, go ahead and fill in your List things you think the painter wanted you to see sheets The Vocation Tree, Inc.
