Tutorial: Creating A Custom Mug There are somethings in this world that have been designed over and over again: the chair, the tooth brush, and the beloved cup. Cups, or temporary liquid storage devices, seem endlessly designed. They have come in every shape, size, and color. They have handles, curves, and sometimes even straws built into them! In this tutorial, you are going to design your own mug. The Game Plan In order to create this cup, we are going to use the revolve tool. The revolve tool takes a shape you created and rotates it around a selected axis, or center point.in the end, you get a circular shape. Creating a Cup Tutorial 1

STEP 0 (Before You Begin)- Change the units from mm to inches 1) To get started, open up a new file and create a new sketch on the XY work plane, or the work plane shown below 2) Create and dimension two lines (using the line tool) that are perpendicular to one another as shown below. Make sure to dimension to the proper size. Creating a Cup Tutorial 2

3) Click on the drop down menu for sketch and click on the offset tool located at the bottom of the list. 4) Select the lines you created. Click and drag the blue icon upwards. You will want to offset your line inches. Click OK. This will create the inner wall of the mug. Creating a Cup Tutorial 3

5) Draw two lines at each end of the shape to connect the original line with the offset line. This will close the sketch, making it a shape. Now that we have our shape, we need to create an axis for our shape to revolve around. 6) Using your line tool, create a vertical line that is co-linear (runs directly in line) with the vertical line in the cup s base. (The length of the line does not matter). Creating a Cup Tutorial 4

7) When finished, click stop sketch and click the home view next to your view cube to rotate the view to see your 2D shape from an angle 8) Under the Create menu, find and select the revolve tool 9) Click on your shape to highlight it in blue (Note: the side menu for revolve needs to be showing, like in the picture below. If it is not, click the arrow on the right side by revolve to reveal it) Creating a Cup Tutorial 5

10) Click the select button next to axis. 11) Click on the middle axis line you created. It should preview the 3-D cup that you created. Select OK or press Enter to finish. Step 10 Step Now that we have the outside of our mug, we need to create a handle to hold onto it! To do this, we will use the sweep tool. This tool is helpful when you have a curved path that isn t straight. You can create a shape and a path for it to follow it. Creating a Cup Tutorial 6

We are going to create the path first, then the shape last. SHS Design Lab 12) Create a new sketch on the XY plane. This will place a sketch through the center of your mug. As you can see, we are looking on the outside of the mug. To help us create a path that passes through our mug, we need to slice the mug in half (temporarily- just to create the path!) 13) On the right side of your screen, expand the sketch palette menu by clicking on the double arrows. Find the slice box and click it. Your mug should look like the picture below (this is called a section view and the colored parts represent the material of your mug) Creating a Cup Tutorial 7

14) In the sketch drop down menu, find arc and select three point arc 15) Create an arc on the side of your mug. Start by clicking inside the colored section about a quarter way up from the bottom. Click within the colored section directly above this about a quarter way up from the top. Lastly, drag your mouse outside the mug to see the arc. Place it where it looks normal and appropriate for a person's hand. See my example below. Creating a Cup Tutorial 8

16) To be more exact, we are going to add dimensions. Add the dimensions shown below. If you need to know how to add these dimensions, read below the picture. For the location of the endpoints, repeat: Click the endpoint of the arc > click the corner of the mug For the width dimensions, drag your mouse up/down For the height dimensions, drag your mouse left/right Click the arc to set the radius 17) When you are finished, click finish sketch Creating a Cup Tutorial 9

For the next few steps, we are going to create the shape of the handle. To do this, we need to place a circle at the starting point of the path. Easy as that, right? There is one small issue though, we need to create a sketch perpendicular to the path and our path starts within the part. On top of this, we cannot start a sketch on a round surface (why you ask? because a sketch needs to be flat. By current laws of physics, a 3-D spherical surface can never be flat). No worries though, we just need to create a sketchable surface, or in 3d modeling terms- a work plane- where we want it. To do this 18) Click on the drop down menu construct and select offset plane. An offset plane is similar to the offset tool in sketching- we are going to use an existing work plane to place our sketching surface a certain distance away. 19) On the left side of your screen, find and click the arrow next to origins to drop down the folder. Find and click on the YZ plane. Creating a Cup Tutorial 10

20) Click and drag the blue arrow until it reads 1.8 inches (or you can simply type 1.8 into the pop up offset plane menu. Click OK to set the plane down. In the end you should see a yellow square in your cup. 21) Click create a sketch and select the yellow square (your work plane) as the sketching surface. 22) If you like, you can slice the surface to see where your actual sketching surface is. 23) Under the sketching menu, find and select circle > center diameter circle 24) Create a circle at either end of the blue line. Your mouse should snap to the end point (a cool feature- you can reference other sketches, such as the path you created, to help you with other sketches even though they are not in the same sketch). 25) Dimension the circle to have a.5 diameter. (finished product should look like the picture on the next page). 26) When finished, stop sketch and click to view from your home view. Creating a Cup Tutorial 11

Example for steps We are now ready to create the handle. 27) Under the create drop down menu, select sweep. 28) Click the shape (the circle) to select the profile for the sweep. Creating a Cup Tutorial 12

29) Click path from the side menu and select the curved line. SHS Design Lab NOTE: It will automatically select the cut operation, which is not what we want so do not click ok. 30) In the side menu, find the drop down menu next to operation and select join. This will make your handle a solid, joined object. Click ok. Creating a Cup Tutorial 13

The open end of the mug has sharp edges, which is a safety issue. To take care of this, we are going to add a fillet edge, or round edges. To do this... 31) Click the drop down menu modify and select fillet. 32) Select both the outer and inner edge of the top of the mug. 33) Make the fillet.125 inches. and click ok. This will make an even fillet. 34)BONUS: Open the fillet tool back up and select the edge where the handle meets the mug (shown below). 35) Make these edges.1 inch. This will make your mug more realistic. Creating a Cup Tutorial 14

35) Go to the Render tool under the Model menu and click on Appearance. SHS Design Lab 36) Select a proper material for your cup. Unfortunately, they do not have a ceramic material to select, so I went with a white plastic. Make sure to give it one last save! Creating a Cup Tutorial 15

Mug Extension- Adding a Picture To Your Mug SHS Design Lab Most mugs have a saying or a picture on them, so why not your mug? This set of instructions will show you how to wrap a picture around your mugs outer surface Step 0 (setup)- Go on the internet and find an image to put on your mug. Save this to your documents on the computer. 1) From the drop down Insert menu, select decal 2) Click the round side of your mug 3) In the Decal pop up menu, click the icon next to select image 4) Find the picture you selected from the internet and click insert 5) Using the interactive tools, you can: a) click in the position you would like your picture initially b) use the arrows and square for fine tuning c) rotate it using the semi circles d) scale it to the size that you want using the outer lines around the square 6) When finished, select okay and admire your work! Great job! Creating a Cup Tutorial 16
