English Listening Comprehension: Teacher s copy Storymaking Magic Story By: Andrew Frinkle Andrew was an author. He wrote tons of short stories, several every month. Some people sometimes asked him where he got his ideas. How do you keep making up stories? They asked. Isn t it hard to come up with all these new ideas? He always just smiled and kept his secret. His real secret was a magic pair of glasses. They seemed like normal glasses, but they gave him powers. They allowed him to see a story in everything. If he wore them, normal objects and events became stories! How did they work exactly? It went like sort of like this Andrew was walking around the store with his magic glasses on. He went down the produce aisle, where he saw some bananas. Suddenly, his magic glasses began to shine, and he saw the bananas glowing with a strange, magical light. He knew he had to write a story about monkeys and bananas. It was that simple.
2 Another time, Andrew saw some students leaving school. They were complaining about riding the bus. His magic glasses began to shake and nearly fell off his nose! The bus began to glow with an unearthly light. He knew he had to write a story about a funny bus ride with students terrified of riding the bus because of the driver. Or what about the time Andrew was fixing the sink? It seemed like an ordinary thing, a broken sink. But lo and behold, the sink began to shine as the glasses worked their magic. The new faucet dazzled and he just had to write a story about that, too. With just a few pages and words, common things became big stories. Little ideas like a butterfly, a boy with bad manners, a pillow, a bird s nest, or just about anything could be made into a story. Everyone around him became an influence for stories. Did they know they were so interesting? Well, now that everyone knows the secret, perhaps if they see Andrew walking down the street or down the hallway, they will step lightly and wave politely, so if they end up in a story, it is a kind portrayal. No one wants to look silly in a story forever!
