35 types of die CUttInG KISS CUT this is an image of a round cornered rectangle. as you can see the corners have a radius and there is spacing between labels on the roll. the spacing between labels allows for a perforation and will allow the label art to bleed without affecting the next label on the roll. SQUARE CORNER W/ STOCK BORDER also called butt cutting uses a tool that scores the label stock in a continuous roll. there is no space between labels and no extra area to the roll width. the lack of spacing requires the artwork to be set in slightly, giving the label a natural border. this technique is great when you can t find the exact die size you want in one of the kiss cut programs because you can select the width you want and then pick from a variety of available repeats. 38 HelPFUl InForMatIon PoPUlar label terms Adhesive: Illustrated on page 31 and 33 Back: adhesive is on the back side of the label. If the label is being applied to a window, it would go on the outside of the window. Face: adhesive is on the front of the label. If label is being applied to a window, it would go on the inside of the window. Backside Printing: also called liner print, is printed on the liner of the label. Great for coupons or to detail any additional information needed. Illustrated on page 20 Bleed: Ink coverage extends to the edges of the label. We do not suggest setting up square corner (butt cut) labels with a bleed (ink coverage to all edges). this may require an upcharge. Illustrated on page 7 BOPP: a type of film material also known as polypropylene. Stands for Biaxially oriented Polypropylene. Border: there are several ways to illustrate a border. Bleed border: a border at least 1/8" wide on all sides where ink bleeds off the edge of the label. Illustrated on page 7 Stock border: a border set in at least 1/8" on all sides that exposes the material as the border. Illustrated on page 10 Set-in border: a design in the artwork set in at least 1/8" on all sides that creates a border. Illustrated on page 7 Butt Cut or Square Corner: type of cutting the label stock to size that uses fixed blades instead of dies. labels are cut to size with no excess liner. Unless additional tooling is used, butt cut labels do not bleed. Illustrated on page 10 EDP Smudgeproof: type of material used for dot matrix printers. a very porous material. not recommended for flood coats or heavy ink coverage. test white litho as an alternative. Flood Coat: entire label is coated with a specific color to give the label stock a unique color. Illustrated on page 12 Lamination: Clear film coating provides extra durability and extends label life. Liner: Is the coated carrier the label sits on. this is what holds the label until it is ready for application. Litho: another way to describe white matte paper stock. litho or Matte finishes are great for hand writing. Matrix: the material around the label that is typically removed and discarded. Perforation: the liner is perforated between each label, making it easy to be torn apart. Reverse: label stock color is shown through the ink coverage to create an image. Illustrated on page 11 & 18. Fine copy in reverse is not recommended below 6 point type. Screen: an art method of taking a color and reducing its density using dotted pattern. Illustrated on page 12. If artwork contains screens, please provide an electronic art file. We can hold screen values of 3% to 95%. 37 Single or Sheeted: labels are individually cut and stacked. Static Cling: label material that has a static charge allowing it to stick to smooth clean surfaces without the use of adhesive. Will stick to glass, baked enamel and plastic. Can be easily removed and repositioned. not recommended for outdoor use. Static Cling can come in back or face static. Varnish: a clear liquid coating applied over the top of your label s color imprint to give it protection against light handling and light moisture or a specific glossy or matte finish. Weatherproof: these labels are heat, cold, moisture, and sunlight resistant for up to 1 ½ years. note, not all inks are suitable for direct sunlight exposure for this length of time. ask your Sales associate what colors have the best longevity for fade resistance. General art GUIdelIneS Artwork logos, Illustrations, photographs, typesetting, borders, graphics, reverses. Bleeds Build in 1/8" bleed for any art that extends beyond the die cut. Camera Ready or Print Ready artwork that is exact size, positioned correctly and color separated. It can be in the form of electronic files (using one of our supported file formats.) If artwork contains screens, please provide an electronic art file. Upon request hard copy or disk artwork will be returned via USPS. Customer Supplied Copy Copy should be typewritten or hand-printed by the customer so it is clear and error-free. We will follow the exact specifications in laying out your label. In the absence of exact specifications, our artists will use their best judgment in designing your label. We will not be responsible for errors of customer provided specifications or in the design of the label, so long as it is reasonable. We may require review of a free PdF proof. 39 application / environment Moisture: If the label is to be exposed to moisture, then a varnish or a lamination film will be required in order to protect the ink from washing off. this varnish or lamination will protect against moisture; but will not give you a greater sun resistance. We suggest that you advise us on the end use so recommendations can be discussed. Adhesives: different adhesives have different properties. It is important to advise us of any unusual characteristics of the surfaces to which the label will be affixed. Such would include various types of plastics (polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, etc.), vinyls, rough surfaces such as wood, small curved surfaces, irregular shapes, etc. See a Sales associate for details on stocks. Fading: We are unable to guarantee sun resistance on our ink labels with our standard inks. If you have any label that will be exposed to a great deal of sunlight and are looking for longevity, then we must use a lightfast ink and additional charges may apply. Please state this requirement when requesting quote. lightfast is not available for all colors. PoPUlar adhesives Permanent: this adhesive generally adheres well to most corrugated, paper and plastic substrates but is not guaranteed to work for every application depending on application conditions (dust, humidity, chemicals, etc.). a label with this adhesive may not be easily removed without the label tearing or leaving residue on the object/surface it was applied to. labels with general-purpose permanent adhesive can be applied at temperatures as low as F. It has a service temperature range of -20 F to +150 F. Freezer Cold Temp: Freezer adhesive is designed to work on hard labeling surfaces in below freezing temperatures. It is generally removable at room temperature. Opaque: opaque adhesive is used for block-out purposes. It is used to prevent show through when a label is used to cover up errors or outdated information. the adhesive is generally permanent. Removable: a removable label can be removed without tearing or pieces remaining on the surface. depending on its level of tack, a removable label can damage the surface of some materials, such as wood and suede. after a period of time or exposure to weather, the removable label will become permanent. Ultra-Removable: this adhesive allows a label to be removed from a surface without leaving any residue or causing any damage. the label can then be reapplied to another area/ surface with no limitation to the number of times it can be repositioned. this adhesive works well with paper and film products and is great for labeling crystal, china, sunglasses and other glassware. Ultra-removable adhesives do not become permanent over time. Bumper Sticker: a label that is repositionable after initial application but becomes permanent after a few minutes.
