2 DORSET SMALL-BORE RIFLE & PISTOL ASSOCIATION Dorset Founded 1910 Small-Bore Rifle and Pistol Association NSRA Affiliation Number 2870 President ~ The Lord Digby DORSET LANDMARKS GA210 Gold Hill Shaftesbury The setting of the 1970 s Hovis television advert, not in Yorkshire as is widely rumoured, but in Shaftesbury in Dorset, one of the oldest Saxon hill towns in the UK. Alfred the Great fortified the town sometime in the 800 s, and about 880 founded Shaftesbury Abbey, which was to become the wealthiest in Britain until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in All in all many centuries of history for such a small town. It was not far from here that Gas & Air was started just over 25 years ago by Mike Johnson. As computers became more affordable in the late eighties it seemed the ideal opportunity to develop the Dorset Leagues into a national event. If my memory s not at fault the first Gas & Air was issued in May 1989, and we ve been active ever since.
