AP Art History Flashcards Tutorial This tutorial will go over the basic features on how to use Virtual Flashcards. First, we ll start with a general overview of the program: A Card Set A Card Group Available cards in card set Preview pane for front of flashcard Preview pane for back of flashcard 3

Getting to know the toolbar: Open a saved project Print all cards Create a new card set Delete a card group View all cards in highlighted set Delete a card set View all cards in program Save your current project Print cards in your card set Create a new card group Create a new card Getting to know your editing toolbar: Rename your card Delete Card Add picture to card Paste from clipboard Add text to card Delete asset (delete picture or text) 4

Adding a new card group What is the difference between a card group and a card set? A card group is the general category such as Physics and the card set is a subcategory such as Equations or Experiments How to add a card group: Simply click on the icon as shown above. A box should appear asking you to name your card group. Name it what you will and click OK. Note: You can also add a new card group by clicking file -> New Card Group 5

Adding a card set I still can t add a card to my card group, why?! To better organize your cards, you must have a card set in order to add cards. To add a card set to your new group simply highlight your new card group by clicking on it as shown below and then clicking on Create new card set. There you got it! Note: You can also add a new card set by clicking file -> New Card Set 6

Deleting a card group/set I can t delete my card group! Why not? To avoid people accidentally deleting hours of work, in order to delete a card group all card sets must be deleted first. Also, to delete a card set, all cards must be deleted. For example, lets say I wanted to delete the card group labeled Delete me card group. (shown below) 7

If you try to click the delete card group button, the following error message will appear: So, in order to delete the card group, you need to delete the card set labeled Delete me card set. However, if you try to delete the card set when there are still three cards in the set, another error message will appear. So, first delete the cards in your set and then you can delete the card set and then the card group as follows: 8

Delete the cards then click here to delete the card set: Then click on the Delete card group button shown below: You have successfully deleted your card group. I want to add 100 cards, but it will take me forever to go file -> new card a 100 times. Is there a faster way? Yes. Simply click on the new card icon and a new card will appear. Rapidly click this until the desired number of cards appears. With a card set highlighted, click this button rapidly to get a lot of new cards to edit. 9

Editing Your Cards To the right of the screen is where you will edit your cards. The top of the screen labeled 6 means this is the top of card 6. The bottom of the screen is lacked 6 Back which means this is the back of card 6. How do I add text to my card? Click on the desired card (front or back you can tell because it will be outlined with a red box). Next click on the add text button shown below: 10

Add the text desired. Notice you can add a symbol and justify the text as desired. OK, I put my text in. Can I resize text & pictures and move it around? Yes. Click on the text and a blue box will appear on the top of the desired text. Note that even if the text is very long, the blue box will appear only at the top of the selected text. Shown below: 11

If you d like to make the text box longer, go to the very edge of the box until horizontal arrows appear as shown below: 12

Now that the double headed arrow cursor has appeared, click and drag the box to the desired length. To make the text bigger, bring your mouse to the bottom of the box until the arrow cursor appears as shown below: 13

Left click on the cursor and hold down and drag the text to the desired size. 14

How do I move the text/pictures around? Move your mouse to the middle of the box and the hand cursor should appear. Left click down and you can move the text to the desired position. How do I delete a card? I keep pressing the button and the card won t delete! To delete a card simply press the Delete Card button as shown below: 15

Do not confuse this with the other X button located at the right. This is the Delete Asset button that deletes selected text or a selected picture. What does the red bar do? As shown below, the red bar increases the size of the viewable card. This adjusts the size of the viewable cards (on the right of the bar). If you want to make the card bigger, just click on the red bar to the desired size. Click here to make the card (on the right) slightly bigger Click here to make the cards (on the right) a lot bigger. Click here to make the cards smaller 16

If I clicked on the red bar to make the cards a lot bigger, this is what it d look like. Notice that the size of the cards increased. 17

What does the blue bar do? This is the blue bar. If you click above the white line or below the white line it will shift the cards order. Card 1 will now be shifted down one card and card 5 will now be on the top. 18

This is what it d look like after shifting Notice that the order has changed as described above. 19

Playing and studying your flashcards I want to study only the Romantic Era right now, is this possible? Yes, it is. Simply highlight the card set you want to study, which in this case is Romantic Era cards and click the play card set button. After selecting your desired card set (in this case Romantic), just press the Play Current Set button shown below to view only Romantic Era cards. It will then look like this: Click here to select the card set Romantic which will show all the Romantic cards available 20

Getting to know your play toolbar This will randomize the cards that you are studying Goes to the next card. You can also click on the right arrow on your keyboard. This will show the back of the card first showing the answer first and then the question second If the student would like to track his answers (keep track of the questions he/she has missed) this must be pressed Goes to the Show only option previous where card. the student can choose You can to also only study new click on the left questions, missed arrow on your questions, or correct keyboard. questions. Autoplay button To flip the card to see which will automatically the answer you can flip or show the answer after a certain amount of Note a faster way to time, which in this case do this would be to hit Statistics panel shows the is 1 second. If the student would like to reset the space bar Tracking press this Your button. Responses number of questions the student has answered right or wrong. 21 all cards to new, he/she can do so by clicking on this button.

Lets do an example to show how this feature works. OK, so lets try to answer the question above in our heads or out loud while studying. The student says to himself/herself Diaphysis and Epiphysis as the answer. The student then either hits the space bar or clicks the Flip card button to reveal the answer. 22

So, the student answered this question correctly. So, the student can click the right arrow on the keyboard or click the right arrow button on the program itself. A window will then pop up. 23

The student then would either click yes or press y on the keyboard. If the student did not answer the question correctly, then he/she would click no or press n on the keyboard. It will then go to the next question, but notice that the statistics part has updated to say that the student has answered 1 question incorrectly so far. The show only button will only test your knowledge of the questions that you d like to see. For example, if you only want to see the questions you have missed, then you select here missed and you will only see the questions you have missed. Don t worry if you close the program, AP Art History Flashcards will keep track of your responses until you clear them out by hitting Reset Cards to new. 24

While viewing the card, the question sometimes gets cut off, can I fix this? Yes, you can. Since everyone has different monitor sizes, AP Art History Flashcards is customizable to adjust the size of the viewing pane while playing or studying your cards. You can adjust the only the width, only the height, or both at the same time. To adjust the width: simply adjust the panel by going to the edge of the box until your cursor changes to a double headed arrow. Left click and hold it down and drag to the desired length. 25

If you d like to adjust the height alone, go to the bottom of the box until the double vertical arrows appear and left click, hold and drag to the desired length as shown below: If you d like to adjust both the height and the width at the same time, go to the corner of the box and wait until the diagonal double headed arrow appears. Left click and hold and drag the box to the desired size. (Shown below). 26

After you are finished the size of the box will be bigger or small and will be customized to your screen. Notice that the box has changed and that the text has changed with it. You can customize how it will look that would be best for your monitor. 27

Can I paste a picture or text in from another program like Microsoft Word? Yes you can. You can paste both text and pictures from the clipboard, but not at the same time. You will have to copy and paste one at a time. Lets give an example. Lets say I have a long paragraph about the kidney that I want to paste and study on a flashcard. The paragraph is in Microsoft Word as shown below. 28

Highlight the text that you want to copy by using the mouse or clicking Ctrl + A. Then go to Edit -> Copy (or press Ctrl + C) as shown below 29

Now go into AP Art History Flashcards and select the desired card to paste this in (in an existing card or a blank card). Click on the Paste from Clipboard button (shown above) and you can paste what you have in your clipboard. Note that anything that is in your clipboard will paste meaning that you can copy from many sources such as the Internet, another program, or from a text document. Note that you can also use Ctrl + V to paste instead of clicking on the Paste from Clipboard Button. You can now adjust the text to make it fit better on the flashcard. Repeat the process for pasting pictures. Is there a way to play all the cards that I have in the program? Yes. Just press the Play all card sets button 30

That s it. Now you can adjust the screen to the dimensions you d like for better viewing. I d like to print the flashcards out, is this possible? Yes. You can either print out all your card sets or just a particular subject. Click here if you d like to print just your highlighted subject. Example if you just wanted to print out your Physics cards Click here if you d like to print all your cards out. This will print every subject that you current have in the program. 31

Printing Your Flashcards As described above, you can print either your current card set (or subject), or all of your cards that are in your program. Let s assume you just want to print out a current card set called Organic Chemistry. It will look like this: This is a layout of what the cards will look like when you print them. Let s go over the options available. The idea is that you can either print out the questions and the answers on two different sheets or you can print out the questions on the front of the page feed in the same page again and print the answers on the back of the page. 32

Prints the selected page. Zoom out Go forward a page Make the answers appear upside down when you print them. Zooms in on page to better see flashcards. Go back a page Current Layout. See below. Print the back of cards or the answers to the questions. Current Layout: There are three options given under the current layout as seen below: You can print out one card per page, 3 cards per page or 6 cards per page depending on your preference. So, Print out the card page of your choice, then print out the back of the cards on a separate piece of paper or use the same piece of paper again to print the questions on the front of the page and the answers on the back of the page. 33

I d like to enter an equation, but I can t get the layout right. How do you do this? Since most students have Microsoft Word, AP Art History Flashcards is compatible with Microsoft Equation Editor. You simply make the equation and/or text with superscript or subscript or special symbols that you d like, and then you copy and paste into the program. An example is shown below. 34

Now select Microsoft Equation 3.0 show below: Now let s us say that you want to make the equation B = Ic/Ib. You would first select the symbol Beta under the Select Symbol label. Select Symbol Then you would want to type the = sign and then select the style of equation you want which is top and bottom which is indicated by the arrow. You get thus far: 35

Now you want to type in Ic on the top then click on the bottom and type Ib. To Add subscript or superscript highlight the letter or number or words you want to superscript/subscript and then use the following: To superscript highlighted text -> hit ctrl -> H (H meaning Higher) To subscript highlighted text -> hit ctrl -> L (L meaning Lower) Example below: Click outside the box when you are finished. Then click once on the finished equation. You hit ctrl -> L while this is highlighted to make the c subscripted. Repeat for the b as well. And then you get your final poduct: β = I I c b 36

Now, click outside the box. You should see boxes around the equation. Then goto edit -> copy (shown below). Now goto AP Art History Flashcards and go to the card you d like to paste it into and either click the paste button (see copy and paste section) or press ctrl -> V The equation appears in the program. 37

I don t see Microsoft Equation Editor when I go to Insert -> Object -> Microsoft Equation 3.0 To resolve this issue, please goto 38
