4 ALPHABET BINGO 1 In order for the students to learn the alphabet, a lot of repetition is necessary. This is a Bingo game that will make the repetition a lot more enjoyable. Photocopy the following Bingo cards, and give one to each student. It doesn t matter if more than one student has the same card, but they shouldn t be sitting next to each other. This game can be played in two ways. 1. The teacher calls out the captions below. When they find the picture that matches the caption called, the students mark the square with a letter chosen by the teacher before each game. Or if the cards are to be used many times, the students can mark the boxes with a small object such as a bean. When a student has five squares in a row marked with the same letter, he or she calls BINGO! The squares can be in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, as long as there are five in a row. The square in the middle marked BINGO is free for all. 2. The teacher calls the name of the first letter. This is much more difficult so we suggest that the students be allowed to help each other during the first couple of games. It is surprising how enthusiastically the students will play this game, and how much they learn while playing. 6 BINGO 2 Game 1: The teacher calls the captions listed below, stressing the initial sound in each word. whale doll igloo man elephant umbrella x-ray fan girl radio yacht jacket octopus net violin truck apple queen house bus skates lady zebra cat As the students gain confidence, the teacher may also substitute other words that the students have learned instead of the original captions. 8 BINGO 3 This Bingo is to give the students practice with using the numbers in English. It is designed for students who have already mastered counting in their own language. The numbers from ten up are represented by pens. The pens are shown in groups of ten, to make it easier for the students to count them. The numbers in the twenties have two groups of 10. Cut the numbers into cards and mix them well. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 players. Deal 4 cards to each player and put the others upside-down in the middle of the table. The first player takes one card from the top of the pile in the middle of the table and says the number. If that player has the card that matches the one he or she picked up, then the matching cards are put together right side up in front of that player. The player can t keep the card unless the number is said correctly. If the player doesn t have the matching card, then it is given to any player that has it, and is placed right side up when he or she has said the number. The game continues with the second, third, fourth and fifth players until there are no more cards in the middle of the table. The winner of this game is the player who gets the most cards. GAME 2: Copy and cut the cards as explained in Game 1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 players. Place all the cards face down in the middle of the table. The first player takes the top card and may keep it if he or she can say the number. If the player can t say the number, then the card is put face down at the bottom of the pile. Continue playing until all the cards have been taken. The player with the most cards wins. GAME 3: Have the students divide into groups of two, or one group of three if the class has an odd number of students. Each student is to take half of the cards (or one third).
