1 RELAY INSTRUCTIONS (These will be useless to you if you ve done this sort of activity before in which case ignore). 1. Print off a copy of the 4 pages of relay questions for each team you plan to have. I usually make 8 sets of cards for a class. That way you can get even a class of up to 32 into at most groups of 4 kids. And if you print them in colour and laminate them they ll last for years and that s just 32 A4 pages and laminating pouches. My tip would be to distinguish each team set of questions by marking the rear of the cards: Set A, Set B, Set C etc...do this before laminating! 2. Getting ready for the relay: Before pupils arrive set up a table with the cards set out in piles (all of Team A s questions stacked together, next to team B s etc). Also print out a copy of the answers for you! Divide the kids into even groups. Issue them with calculators if you think they ll need them. Provide something for working (either showme boards or scrap paper) and also a whiteboard pen for writing their answers on the relay cards. 3. Relay time: Teams run out to collect question 1. They figure out the answer, write their final answer on the relay question card and check this with you. Decide up-front whether you allow more than one attempt (I usually allow multiple attempts unless the question has a limited number of possible answers). If they get it right, they take question two and move on. If not, try again. You need to keep a tally of each team s success and this gets a bit frantic but all part of the fun. Winning team is the one with most correct...not the first finished. Use time-taken only as a tie-breaker! Think that s everything. Enjoy.
