1 POGIL LAB ERCISE 06 Compound Canasta POGIL LAB 06 Page 1 of 9 Each member should assume his or her role at this time. The new manager takes charge of the POGIL folder and hands out the GRF and RRF to the appropriate members. The new recorder should record the names of the group members on the new GRF and the new recorder should record the start time for the lab. Table 1. Group Member Role Assignments GROUP TYPE -> GROUPS OF THREE GROUPS OF FOUR MEMBER. -> Manager + + Reporter + + Recorder + + Reflector + + Technician + Encourager + + SFUC + * * + Managers should begin processing as soon as role assignments have been completed. OBSERVATION I. The object of this lab and game is to get a lot of practice in naming compounds and to have some fun while doing it. This lab is a card game roughly based on the game of Canasta. There is a special deck of cards that have various ions printed on them. Each of the cards has a point value. These cards have to be played so that they form the formula of real compounds; when played in this manner the points printed on the cards are earned. The object of each game is to accumulate as many points as possible. Each game terminates when one person in the group plays all their cards or until the instructor calls time. A. THE CARDS: Each deck contains 216 cards. Figure 1 shows the format of the cards. Each card contains these four important points of information: +5 MIN

2 POGIL LAB 06 Page 2 of 9 1. The charge or effective charge of the atom or molecule and governs the way the card must be played to form molecules. To make a molecule with this card it must be combined with a cation(s) with the same charge, e.g. Na, to make a molecule (NaCl). Two of these cards would have to be played with a Ca +2 card to make CaCl2. 2. The name applied to the ion or atom or molecule on the card. 3. The symbol of the atom or polyatomic entity being played. Figure 1: A Card From the Deck. 4. This is the point value of the card and is used to figure the score. B. THE PLAY: 1. The Shuffle: The Encourager shall serve as the first dealer and the deal passes clockwise after each game. The dealer should divide by inspection the deck into as many piles as there are players in the group and then deal nine cards from his stack face down in front of the group. All members of the group should then place cards from their piles one at a time on the nine cards in sequence until all their cards are dealt. When all the cards have been dealt in this manner, the dealer will randomly combine the nine decks into one deck. 2. The Deal: The deal for the game occurs in two stages: a. The dealer will deal one card face up for each member of the group in the middle of the table. While the dealer is dealing the rest of the cards, the rest of the group can arrange the face-up cards into cations and anions and by increasing absolute value of the charge. b. The dealer will deal cards face down one or two at a time to all players until all cards have been handed out. The dealer should include an instructor pile that gets one cards every other time around. (In other words the instructor gets only half the cars as the rest of the group members. Players are not to look at their cards. Each person should receive the same amount of cards. Left over cards should be placed in the instructor s pile. +10 MIN

3 POGIL LAB 06 Page 3 of 9 3. The Play: The instructor will make the first play at each table. Then the play moves in a clockwise manner around the table. A play consists of the following steps: a. The top card of the player s deck is turned face up beside in front of the deck. b. The player then attempts to form a compound by matching the card or any upturned card on the table with another face-up card on the table to form a compound. c. A compound is formed when two or more cards are matched so that the total charge is zero as shown in Figures 1 and Ion Chloride Ion -1 Chloride Ion -1 Calcium Ion +2 Chloride Ion -1 Na + Cl - Cl - Ca 2+ Cl - 1 Ion 1 Chloride Ion Figure 2. Card Play for the Compound, Chloride. Total score is 2. 1 Chloride Ion 2 Calcium Ion 1 Chloride Ion Figure 3. Card Play for the Compound, Calcium Chloride. Total score is MIN d. The matched cards are laid out on the table as shown above and the player announces the name of the compound as if it were in an aqueous environment. e. If there is no error in name or formula, the player collects the cards, lays them face up on his/her score sheet and turns another card up from the face-down deck. Play continues until she/he cannot play the turned-up card; the unplayed card is added to the middle of the table. f. If an error in the name and/or formula is recognized by a member of the group, that member shall call out SNAP! The person that has snapped the play must then correct the error. If there is agreement that an error was made and was properly corrected, the snapper takes possession of the cards and enters the correct name, formula and score on her/his score sheet and the player making the error turns over his top card and places it in the middle of the table thus ending her/his play. The next player then begins their turn. HOWEVER, if the snapper is in error then the player gets twice the number of points and continues play. The instructor will be the final judge if the group cannot come to agreement about errors. g. The scores for each play are kept individually on the last score sheet of this handout (Table 2.1 Table, Page 10 if this is the first game.) All score sheets should end up in the left pocket of the group folder. h. Play continues until one person in the group runs out of cards. Notify the instructor when this happens.

4 POGIL LAB 06 Page 4 of 9 4. When this exercise is done in class it will be worth 10 participation points when done as a lab; it is worth 5 points if used in a class period. In either case, the number of points you earn will depend on the card points you score. A total of 100 card points are necessary to earn all the points offered. 5. At the end of the class/lab period, the Encourager should collect and package the cards. ERCISE END. Recorders should collect Table 2 from each group member and attach them to the GRF. Managers should collect the GRF with score sheets and RRF, paper clip them together, and place in the back of the left pocket of the folder. The folder should be closed and left on the table or given to the instructor. FINALLY, ALL MEMBERS OF THE GROUP SHOULD BRING THIS LAB TO CLASS NT WEEK MIN
