10 Hi Pete: HIGH QUALITY ENERGY EFFICIENT LIGHTING I hope you are well. The contractor demonstrated the three MR16 lamps below: 1) G-Brand Q50MR16CFl40 Constant Color Series MR16 lamp (your recommendation) 2) C-Brand CMR16H30FL 3000K high output dimmable LED MR16 lamp (your recommendation) 3) S-Brand LED (recommended by electrician) Your recommendations 1) and 2) were much brighter than 3). I have a few questions: A) I m curious, do you have an opinion about the S-Brand LED? As per the contractor, the S-Brand LED is a $2000 upgrade from the MR16 and the C-Brand LED is a $3000 upgrade from the MR16. B) How much longer do you estimate the 2) LED will last compared to the 1) MR16? The client is thinking the $3000 upgrade to C-Brand LED is probably not worth it. What are your thoughts? Thanks. Hi Richard...the most important things with a retrofit LED lamp are that (a) they provide equivalent light output, (b) the color is excellent, and (c) they are fully dimmable. The S-Brand lamps do not fit any of these criteria. My experience is that the C-Brand lamps should be around $35 - $40 each...the expected life is a minimum of 40,000 hours. The other important factor is impact on electric bill savings. The C-Brand lamps are 8 watts (compared to 50), which is an 80% savings on wattage, not to mention the diminished impact on the HVAC system since they do not generate nearly as much heat. 10

18 Color Temperature LIGHTING TERMINOLOGY The color temperature is a specification of the color appearance of a light source, relating to the color of a reference source heated to a particular temperature, measured by the thermal unit Kelvin. The measurement can also be described as the warmth or coolness of a light source. The outward appearance of the color of a light source (i.e. warm or cool). 20 Color Rendering LIGHTING TERMINOLOGY A scale of the effect of a light source on the color appearance of an object compared to its color appearance under a reference light source. Expressed on a scale of 1 to 100, where 100 indicates no color shift. A low CRI rating suggests that the colors of objects will appear unnatural under that particular light source.
