Which is greater, 2 7 or Why? Have your students choose 4 numbers and place them on a number line and list them in increasing order. They must have one each of the following: a negative number, a positive whole number, a decimal, and a fraction.

4 Algebra 135 Seminar Lesson 57 Part I: Bell Work 1. Plot the following numbers on a number line a. 2, 5, -3 b. -4, 1, 0 c. 5.6, 2.7, -1.1 d. 2.23, 2.33 e , , -5 f. 3.2, 0, List the numbers in parts c, e, and f in decreasing order. 3. Which is greater, 2.65 or Why? Part II: Mini-Lesson - Vertical Number Line Give a lesson in which students are taught how to plot numbers on a vertical number line. This is to prepare them for working with the y-axis in graphing. 1. Plot the following numbers on a number line a. 4, 6 b. -3, 5 c. 0, -1 d. 4.6, 1.8, 5.4 e. 3.56, -2.2 f. 1 2, 4 1 2, 2 g. -2, 0, -6 h. 5, -1, 0 i. 5, -5, 2, -6 Have the students answer the following questions. 1. What kind of number would be on the left side of a horizontal number line? 2. What kind of number would be in the top side of a vertical number line?

5 Algebra 135 Seminar Lesson 58 Part I: Bell Work - Number Line 1. Plot the following numbers on a horizontal number line a. 0, -2, -3 b. 4, -2, 3.5 c. 1.2, 3.6, -4.1 d. -2, 3, 7 e. 6, 1, 6.7 f. 13, -1, Plot the following numbers on a vertical number line a. 4, -1, -3 b. 0, -2, 6.5 c. 5.2, 3.8, -2.1 d. -6, 1, -3 e. 8, 2, 3.8 f. -11, 5.7, -4 Part II: Mini-Lesson Combining Number Lines In this lesson the students should be An example to follow would be to given a horizontal and a vertical give the following information and value. The students should plot the expect the following graph. horizontal point first and then plot 3 the vertical point second on a set of Vertical number line: -4 intersecting lines like below. Do not make any mention of x or y values, coordinate plane, ordered pairs, etc. We want students to see these as two intersecting number lines. Have students complete the following worksheet. Have the students answer the following question. 1. Considering the last two lessons, what lesson do you think will come tomorrow?

Be sure to connect the ordered pair values to points on the vertical and horizontal number line. Try not to get hung up on the x and y, instead try to focus on the vertical and horizontal. Make sure you give a number of examples with decimal values. Avoid zeros. We will cover those tomorrow. Have the students complete the following worksheet. Describe how would you graph the point (1.5, 5.5).
