1 Hot Stone Massage Routine Order of routine Back of clients right leg, then left leg Back, shoulders and neck Turn client over Front of clients right leg and foot, then left leg and foot Abdomen (optional) Clients left arm, right arm Chest and neck Face and head The Plan/Routine Heat stones 30 minutes prior to treatment up to approximately 50 c ( F) you will need approx 35 basalt stones and 12 marine/marble if carrying out cold stone therapy. If you are using a vulsini heat bag, switch on approx 30 minutes at 70c to start off with. Chill cold stone 15 minutes prior to treatment to approx. 0, by placing in fridge or cool bag. If using a water heater, prepare bowl of cold water for cooling stones with a towel base. Cold stones can be left out to warm up Complete consultation procedure and explain removal of clothing and placement of stones with the client. All massage movements begin with manual effleurage and end with manual effleurage. The heated stones should be used to warm the hands before commencement. If combing hot and cold, start with hot stones. 1
2 Placement of stones one large sacral stone onto sacrum and tuck, you can also place small stones down the spine and tuck. Back of legs Top of leg 1. Manual effleurage from the ankle up to the base of buttock (ease pressure over the back of the knee x6 2. Introduce heat from stones and repeat number 1 with a stone in each hand 3. From above the knee to the buttocks effleurage x6 with two stones 4. Petrissage with 2 stones - wringing 5. Slide one stone up IT band 6. Tapping along hamstring and IT band Lower leg 1. Effleurage from the ankle to back of the knee, with a stone in each hand x6 2. Petrissage to the calf area with 2 stones - wringing 3. Raise the lower leg, use the side of a stone,apply pressure along gastrocnemius, then flat of stone stroke down and in - x3 4. Using 2 smaller stones, apply circular frictions around the ankle bone x many 5. Frictions along the Achilles tendon 6. Run a stone down the side of the foot 7. Finish with manual effleurage to whole leg and cover Repeat with other leg Back, Shoulders and Neck 1. Remove placed stones 2. Standing at the side of the client, place hands in centre of the back, and slide one up to neck and one down to sacrum manually x 3 3. Gradually introduce heat from stones, with one stone either side of the spine, effleurage from sacrum, up and around the shoulders and back down x 6 (careful of bone) 4. With one stone,(reinforced hand) work on one side, effleurage from sacrum up and around the shoulder x 6 5. Two stoned petrissage to the side of the body, from shoulders to sacrum x many 2
3 6. Standing at side of client, use trigger stone or side of stone around the scapula (drain), carry out tapping. 7. Swap sides and repeat number 4, 5 and 6 8. Standing at head, Petrissage across the shoulders with flats of stones then stones on their side, into the traps 9. Vibrations down spine from neck to sacrum, with a stone either side of the spine, then tapping down sides of the spine. 10. With two stones, stand at the side and carry out stretches across the lower back, then circular Petrissage to lower back area and sacrum with stones on their side 11. Standing at head, stroke down the spine, slowing down to finish x Repeat number 2 Turn the client over (Place support under the knee if needed) 1. Placement of stones - Place large contour stone under towel for client to lie on (lower back). 2. Place 2 flat medium stones under Trapezuis muscles and 1 contour stone under base of skull. 3. Place sacral stone over pelvis. Front of leg Upper leg Knee 1. Manually effleurage from the foot to the top of thigh x 6 (avoid shin bone) 2. Gradually introduce heat from the stones and repeat number 1 with two stones 3. Effleurage from above the knee to the thigh area x 6 with two stones 4. Petrissage with two stones wringing 1. Very gently with the sides of two stones, friction around the knee 2. Drain down to the popliteal region Lower leg 1. Effleurage from the ankle to the knee x 6 with two stones (avoid shin bone) 2. Petrissage with two stones to fleshy calf muscle 3. Using flat of one stone effleurage the sole of foot. 4. Use side of stone down the side of the foot. 3
4 5. Drain metatarsals towards ankle bone using side of one stone. Repeat on other leg, place toe stones in between toes and cover feet. Abdomen (Optional) 1. Manually effleurage the abdomen in a clockwise motion using whole of one hand depending on the area size a. Up the ascending colon b. Diagonally across transverse colon c. Down the descending colon 2. Introduce heat, then one stone (re-inforced hand) and repeat number one Arm and hand 1. Manually effleurage from wrist to shoulder x 6 2. Gradually introduce heat then one stone and repeat number 1 3. Kneading to forearm with one stone 4. Bend at elbow, drain inside forearm using one stone 5. Raise arm and apply one handed kneading to upper arm with one stone 6. Stroking with one stone over the wrist and top of hand 7. Metacarpal draining with side of one stone 8. Kneading to the palm with one stone Repeat on other side Chest and Neck 1. Fingers facing inwards, manual effleurage to neck and chest area x 6 2. Gradually introduce heat and two stones and repeat number 1 3. One side of the neck knead and stretch out x 6 using one stone 4. Repeat the other side of the neck 5. Kneading to the upper fibres of the trapezuis muscle with the ends of trigger stones If doing a 60 minute massage, place a towel over the client and let them relax for a few moments, offer them a glass of water. Ask them to get dressed and then sit on the chair and give aftercare. 4

Use 1 stone and sweep forehead then place on third eye chakra (use cotton pad if too hot) 3. Use 2 stones on face, around cheeks, eyes, jaw using both flat and side. 4. Collect 3 cold stones, replace the stone on third eye, and place 2 over the eyes. 5. Start massaging head with the 2 hot stones, 1 in each hand, carry out slow frictions. 6. Remove all stones except sacral stone. 7. Remove sacral stone to finish. Finish massage. 5
