Day 1 Solve algebraic word problems by creating an X-Box Warm - Up Part One- Make an X-Box for each: 1) Bob is twice as old as Mary. 2) Fred is one more than triple Jim s age. 3) There is three times the number of boys 4) At the feeder, there is five more than six than girls at the party. times the number of sparrows than Robins. 5) A larger number is eight more than a smaller number 6) The ratio of a larger number to a smaller number is 4:3. 1

Part Two Solving Equations Using an X-Box 7. Tom is four times Sue s age. The difference between their ages is 9 years. How old is Tom? 8. Bill has five times the amount in his bank account than Karen. The difference between their accounts is $900. How much do they each have? 2

9. A larger number is five less than twice a smaller number. The sum of the numbers is 16. Find the smaller number. 10. One integer is four more than three times another integer. The sum of the two integers is 20. Find both numbers. 3

11. Two numbers are in ratio of 5:3. The sum of the numbers is 88. Find the larger number. 12. The ratio of cats to dogs at the pound is 12:5. If there are 240 cats at the pound, how many are dogs? 4

Part Two 11. The larger of two numbers is 12 more than twice the smaller. The larger number is 36. What is the smaller number? 12. The Tigers played 78 games. If they won 8 games more than they lost, how many games did they lose? 7

13. The sum of two numbers is 90. The numbers are in ratio of 5:4. Find both the numbers. 14. The ratio of boys to girls in the freshman class is 7:10. If there are 90 girls in the class, how many boys are there? 8

DAY 2: SWBAT: Solve Word Problems by Converting into a Multi-Step Algebraic Equation. Warm Up 9

Example Problems (1-4) Make an X-Box for each and solve: 1. A larger number is five times a smaller a number. Twice the larger number and three times the smaller number is equal to 39. Find both the numbers. 2. The greater of two numbers is twice the smaller. If the greater is decreased by 10, the result is 5 more than the smaller. Find the numbers. 10

3. The ratio of two numbers is 4:3. Twice the larger number and 11 more than the smaller number is equal to 99. Find the smaller number. Perimeter Problems 4. The width of a rectangle is five less than the length. The perimeter is 38 feet. Find the length and width. 11

1. Tom is three years older than Sue. Four times Tom s age is equal to six times Sue s age. Find their ages. 2. The larger of two numbers is 4 times the smaller. If the larger number exceeds the smaller number by 15, find the number. 3. The perimeter of a rectangle is 40 feet. The length is 2 more than 5 times the width. Find the dimensions of the rectangle. 12

Challenge A side of a square is 10 meters longer than the side of an equilateral triangle. The perimeter of the square is 3 times the perimeter of the equilateral triangle. Find the length of each side of the triangle. Summary To solve an equation that has the variable in both members, transform it into an equivalent equation in which the variable appears only in one member. Then, solve this equation. Exit Ticket 13

DAY 2: Homework 1. A larger number is three less than five times a smaller number. If 13 is added to the smaller number, the numbers will be equal. Find the smaller number. 2. The length of a rectangle is seven more than the width. The perimeter is 52. Find the length and the width. 3. At the pound, the ratio of dogs to cats is 5:11. If there are 64 dogs and cats at the pound, how many are cats? 4. Every month, Omar buys pizzas to serve at a party for his friends. In May, he bought three more than twice the number of pizzas he bought in April. If Omar bought 15 pizzas in May, how many pizzas did he buy in April? 14

5. Pam is playing with red and black marbles. The number of red marbles she has is three more than twice the number of black marbles she has. She has 42 marbles in all. How many red marbles does Pam have? 6. The larger of two numbers is 5 more than the smaller. The smaller number plus twice the larger equals 100. Find the numbers. 7. The width of a rectangle is 3 yards less than its length. The perimeter is 130 yards. Find the length and width of the rectangle. 15

DAY 3: SWBAT: Solve Word Problems involving money by Converting into a Multi-Step Algebraic Warm - Up The length of a rectangle is 2½ times its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 84 cm. Find the dimensions of the rectangle. Example Problems (1 & 2) 1. A carnival charges $8 for children and $5 for adults. At the carnival there are five times as many children than adults. If total sales are $9,000, how many children and adults were in attendance? 2. In a store, gum sells for $0.35 and candy bars sell for $0.85. The store sold 100 more candy bars than gum. Total sales were $241. How many packs of gum and candy bars were sold? 16

3. A store sold fifty more Ipods than cameras. Ipods sold for $110 and cameras sold for $48. Total sales were $11,820. How many Ipods were sold? Example Problems - COIN PROBLEMS 4. Robin has two more than three times the number of quarters than dimes in her draw. She has a total of $10.70 in her draw. How many quarters and dimes does she have? 17

5. Sue has four less nickels than quarters. Total amount is $3.40. How many nickels and quarters does she have? Challenge A father divided his shares of stock in AAA Company among his four daughters. The first daughter got one-half the number of shares, the second daughter got one-quarter of the shares, the third daughter got one-fifth of the shares, and the fourth daughter got 7 shares of stock. How many shares of this stock did the father have originally? 18

SUMMARY Exit Ticket There were thirty more adult tickets sold than children tickets. Adult tickets sold for $5 each and children tickets sold for $3. A total of $1038 was collected. Which equation is set up to solve this problem? 1) 5(x- 30) 3x = ) 3(x + 30) + 5x = ) 5(x + 30) + 3x = ) 5(x + 30) = 3x

DAY 3 - HW 1. May has 3 times as many dimes as nickels. In all, she has $1.40. How many coins of each type does she have? 2. Mr. Jantzen bought some cans of soup at $0.39 per can, and some packages of frozen vegetables at $0.59 per package. He bought twice as many packages of frozen vegetables as cans of soup. If the total bill was $9.42, how many cans of soup did he buy? 3. Bess has $2.80 in quarter and dimes. The number of dimes is 7 less than the number of quarters. Find the number of each kind of coin that she has. 20
