23 Prairie MMP: thoughts on operational monitoring Most land is privately owned, but ~95% success in gaining access Cost is prohibitively expensive using the current delivery model during 2009 and 2010 conducted 3,764 surveys and the average cost per survey was ~$55 ($44-77/survey) cost for collecting the 649 days of recording was ~$23/day cost of processing a 5-minute sample was ~$3 cost per day of sampling will decline as units are deployed in years to come
24 Prairie MMP: thoughts on operational monitoring More likely to have success with implementation if meeting needs for more that just marsh birds JV Plans, BCR Plans, NABCI docs: information needs for other tier groups are similar
25 Prairie MMP: some design considerations Harvest is not an issue in Canada; greater need for strengthened habitat programs (stewardship, easements, regulatory mechanisms) Need for linkage to JV/BCR: are there key questions to answer that will enhance our ability to achieve goals & objectives? Should strive to guide habitat programs: securement, easement, restoration & enhancement.
26 Prairie MMP: some design considerations Stratified sampling that accounts for, or assesses known or conjectured sources of variation strata: ecoregion, land use how much population process is due to things that we cannot control (fluctuating K)? What comprises an independent station? Area requirements are species-specific & scale of inference differs due to this.
27 Prairie MMP: some design considerations Consider flexibility on protocols and delivery mechanism Do all surveys need to be minute-byminute intensive sampling? Wide scale deployment of ARUs? Can the selection of PSU be flexible without compromising statistical integrity?
