China - Sichuan - Birding Trip Report 21/05/ /06/2011 Summary After several trips in Europe, South America and Africa, I wanted to visit the Asian continent. Although we went in India last year, it was not the truly Asia. I started to read some trip reports on the internet and I choose China, especially Sichuan, because this destination offers good diversity of Asian birds, lots of endemics and an easy logistics. Participants This trip was a great success! We saw 278 species of birds and 10 species of mammals (including Red Panda and Wolf). Thanks also to Eva and François for their patience on the field and for the good atmosphere during the entire trip. Getting there - flights We booked a return flight Bruxelles Beijing - Chengdu through Go Voyages website. The cost of the flight was 753 /pers. All the flights were operated by Hainan Airlines. Departure o 21/05/2011: Bruxelles (1h50 pm) Beijing (22/05/2011 5h10 am) o 22/05/2011: Beijing (7h55 am) Chengdu (10h30 am) Return o o 11/06/2011: Chengdu (11h35 am) Beijing (2h30 pm) 12/06/2011: Beijing (1h20 am) Bruxelles (6h am) Initially the flight Chengdu - Beijing was planned on the 11/06/2001 at 8h50 pm and will arrive at Beijing around 11h10 pm. Two weeks before the departure Hainan Airlines changed the schedule. We had a very long stop-over at Beijing but the company provided us a comfortable hotel near the airport. Getting around - transport Laojunshan: we used the service of Mr Dai Bo and he arranged the lodging and the transport to the park. He was waiting for us, together with 2 Laojunshan National Park staff members, at Chengdu aiport. The price was CNY (~ 150 ) for the transport from Chengdu airport to the park. You can contact him by mail dai-bo@126.com. China Sichuan

Rest of the trip: we hired a van with driver by Samtours. We choose a van instead of a 4WD (more expensive). We had plenty of space and it was very comfortable albeit a bit slow (max 90km/h on speedway). The price was CNY (~ 1120 ) for 17 days. The price include rental of the van, fuel, toll fee, salary and accommodation of the driver. Contact person: Samuel Yue Company name: Chengdu Overseas Tourist Corporation Address: No. 246 Wuhouci Dajie, Chengdu, China Tel: Fax: Mobile: samtour@yahoo.com On the last day on Chengdu, the drive from the hotel to the airport was not included, the driver charged us 100 CNY (~ 10 ). Jiuzhaigou: the park can be explored by foot or by bus. There are 2 types of bus stop: one to get off and one to get on. Between the 2 stops, you have to walk surrounded, at some place, by hundreds of Chinese tourists. It s nearly impossible to take a bus from a get off stop or along the road, although on the last day a bus stopped to pick up. Accomodations Laojunshan NP: we stayed 1 night at the Er Ping Guesthouse and 2 nights at Laojun Guesthouse at the top of the mountain. The accommodation was very basic there, only a bed, no electricity and no heating. We were so tired that we slept quite well! The price was CNY (entrance, accommodation and food) for 3 persons. Rest of the tour: Sam takes care of booking all the hotels for us. Due to a misunderstanding he booked only a room for 2 persons. Finally, François shared the accommodation with the driver in every place except in Ruoergai where we shared the room with him. We paid CNY for 17 nights for a double room in each hotel. François paid less, as he benefits from the driver s accommodation price. Not a bad deal :-) Accomodation was generally ok. Laojunshan Name: Er Ping Guesthouse and Laojun Guesthouse Number of nights spent: 3 Review: very basic accommodation, no electricity and no heating. Restaurant: food was included (noodles in the morning and good lunch at midday and the evening, not very varied but ok for 3 days). Wawushan China Sichuan

Name: Gongtong Shanzhuang Number of nights spent: 4 Review: expensive (220 CNY) regarding the state of the rooms. Not hot water and no heating, only heating blanket. The staff provides thermos with hot water. European toilet in the room. Restaurant: Only one available on the top. Good and cheap. Menu in English but only few meals translate. Breakfast only served as from 7h30 am. Wolong Name: Linhui Hostel Number of nights spent: 5 Review: Nice hotel with hot water but Turkish toilet. Restaurant: good and cheap. They invited us to go in the kitchen in order to choose what we wanted to eat. Maerkang Name: Minshan Hotel Number of nights: 2 Review: Very good hotel, clean room and bed. Hot water and air-conditioning in the room. Restaurant: no restaurant in the hotel, but lots around. Ruoergai Name: Highland Peal Hotel Number of nights: 2 Review: Good hotel, clean room and bed. Hot water and air-conditioning in the room. Restaurant: no restaurant in the hotel, but lots around. Jiuzhaigou Name: Fengye Meishi Hotel Number of nights: 2 Review: Very expensive hotel regarding where we went before (the cheaper in the area I guess). The room cleanliness is not top as the price. They didn t provide towels, after Sam has discussed with the owner they have provided us some. Restaurant: we didn t try the hotel restaurant because it looks expensive, plenty small place to eat around hotels, sometimes expensive (very touristic place). Jiuzhaigou Name: Pension inside the park Number of nights: 1 Review: good enough to spend a night. Shower and Turkish toilet available. The cost for a night is 100 CNY included evening lunch. Restaurant: a good supper was included in the price. Chengdu Name: Holly s Hostel Number of nights: 1 Review: maybe the best hotel during our stay! Very clean place with hot water and airconditioning in the room. Free internet at disposal! Restaurant: we didn t try the hotel restaurant, we preferred to had lunch outside. Food The food was good and quite cheap everywhere (except in some restaurant in Jiuzhaigou). The breakfast in restaurant consists in noodles (no breads) but are served quite late (around 7h30am). Expect to pay around 40 CNY (~ 4 ) for 4 persons. For the evening lunch we took rice with pork/beef meat and a plate of vegetables. Menus are in Chinese and, except in some restaurant, there is no pictures of the dishes. At some places we went directly in the kitchen and we showed what we wanted to eat. We paid a lunch around 160CNY for 4 persons. We brought our own Tupperware, so sometimes we took with us the remaining to eat the next day in the field. China Sichuan

A 50cl beer is around 8 CNY :-) Weather In small shop along the road or in villages you can buy tape water (1 to 2 CNY for a 50cl bottle) and some pastries. It s very difficult (impossible?) to find bread and sometimes you can t identify what they sold :-) Rice cakes are quite good! We encountered all type of weather during our stay: sun, fog, rain and even snow! So bring hat, gloves, fleece jacket, umbrella and rain gear! You never know! We had rain nearly every day (either day or evening/night). In the daily log the weather is specified. The fog at the top of Wawushan costs us at least one endemic (Gray-hooded Parrotbill) and in Balangshan we had only one very clear morning in 3 days with snow on the ground between km 92 and 94. Health & Safety Endemic We didn t encounter any troubles during our stay. We saw 28 species of endemic birds Verreaux's Partridge Sichuan Partridge Chinese Monal Blue Eared-Pheasant Golden Pheasant Severtsov's Grouse Sichuan Jay White-browed Tit Pere David's Tit Yellow-bellied Tit Sooty Tit Sichuan Treecreeper Sichuan Leaf-Warbler Emei Leaf-Warbler Spectacled Fulvetta Chinese Fulvetta Three-toed Parrotbill Pere David s Laughingthrush Sukatschev's Laughingthrush Barred Laughingthrush Giant Laughingthrush Buffy Laughingthrush Elliot s Laughingthrush Gray-faced Liocichla Slaty Bunting Pink-rumped Rosefinch Chinese White-browed Rosefinch Tibetan Snowfinch References I collected several trip reports from Travellingbirder but now you can find these reports on The following reports were the most interesting: Laojunshan, Sichuan, China : Björn Anderson Sichuan (18/05 18/06/2006) : Peter Collaerts Sichuan (19/05 05/06/2006) : Remco Hofland China: Sichuan & Qing Hai 7-27 July 2007 China - 2 April - 7 June 2009 : Noëlle & Hervé Jacob Sichuan 1 May 24 May 2010, including Crested Ibis extension : Henk Hendriks Literature We took with us: A Field Guide to the Birds of China by J. 6 Sites visited & birding facts Laojunshan National Park This park is not regularly visited but it s the best place for the endemic Sichuan Partridge. We spent 3 days here but maybe it s better to take 1 day more, especially if the weather is bad. We had a full day of fog on the top but despite that fact we saw good species. Lower part Don t spend too much time around Er Ya Ping Guesthouse because the best species are on the ridge. Upper part After climbing the steep steps you will reach the ridge. Wawushan Road near the entrance Just after the entrance on your left it s a road that follows the river and passes next to some buildings. Take this road and go up to a rusty pipe that crosses the road (from above), just before a right turn. 20m before the pipe on the right side there are some bushes where Ashy-throated Parrotbill is easy. Just after the turn we found a pair of Chestnut-crowned Warbler. Mid elevation We explore the area between Km19 and Km7 several morning and evening by car and also by foot. It s the best strategy to see the Lady Amherst's Pheasant, we saw at least 4 and we heard another 3 calling. The area around Km11 is very good for warblers, especially Emei Leaf-Warbler. Top elevation The main problem is the weather. It s difficult to predict from the bottom what the conditions will be at the top. We spent 2 days there and we had only 3 hours of good weather. The weather can change quickly at the top On the first day we explored the trail going right from the top of the cable car, but as there was too much fog we went back in the forest via the trail to Len Xi Water Fall. We did the entire tour via the Tai Qing Temple. China Sichuan

On our second day we started directly in the forest and when we arrived in the open area the fog was already thick. The area near the closed trail is good for Brown Bush-warbler. Gongtong Shanzhuang hotel We didn t spent lots of time exploring this area. We took the trail behind the hotel but it s very difficult to follow. We saw nothing special there. Wawushan hotel We spent 2 hours around this hotel near the entrance of the park. We saw there our only Brown Shrike of the trip. Wolong area Sawan Due to construction works, the trail behind the hotel is not easily reachable. On our first day, a Sunday, it was possible to use it but during weekdays it s not. We found another trail at the start of the village. First the trail goes through cultivated field but after a few hundred meters it merges with the forest trail. We went there two times before we saw our target: Slaty Bunting. Wuyipeng We spent 2 days at this site. We easily found the entrance of the trail but we lost our way during the rise on the first day. This site required a permit to explore the trails behind the ranger s office. As a group, with permit, visits this site on the same day, we decided to explore the trail from the bottom until the station. On the second day we walked directly to the ranger s station, it took us at least 1.30 hours, with 2 stops, to reach the station. At 8.30am we were on the trail behind the station, we spent the rest of the day between the station and the top of the hill. The first part of the trail was nearly birdless but after passing a rocky area, requiring some climbing, we reached a much better forest with bamboos. Here we saw good birds Three-toed and Fulvous Parrotbill, Black-faced Laughingthrush and a Sichuan Treecreeper. China Sichuan

500m before reaching the top, Eva found a Red Panda resting on a branch of a big fir tree. We spent the next half hour to observe it before he disappeared in the bamboo. Balangshan We spent 2 full days and 1 morning at this site. Normally there are mileage sign along the road but very few signs remain. Only the sign 94km is still in place. Km92 Pheasant site We visit this area between 6.30am and 8am. After the tunnel (when coming from the bottom) there is a parking area. When facing the high mountains, on your left side you have an open area where we saw White Eared-pheasant. Several Koklass Pheasant were calling between bushes but we haven t seen any. China Sichuan

On the other side of the road, hills holds several Snow Pigeon, Rosy Pipit and several calling Verreaux's Partridge giving very good view. On a low hill nearby we saw a couple of Chinese Monal feeding between low bushes. Km 94 Wood Snipe site Before you reach the 94 km sign you will see high voltage eletric wires crossing the road. The Wood Snipe inhabits this area. It s easy to hear this bird but it s more difficult to have a view on it. On our first morning the view was quite clear and we managed to have a brief view of a flying bird. The 2 next mornings the fog was thick and it prevented us to see anything. The bird is active from 5 to 5.45am. Km 88 Obelisk area We walked 2 times between km92 and km88, one afternoon and one morning. The best area was between km 89 and 88 and the grassy areas around the obelisk. We saw here Darkbreasted and Chinese White-browed Rosefinch, Crimson-browed Finch, Collared Grosbeak, Giant Laughingthrush and Chinese Babax. Km 94 Top We stopped regularly along the road and we easily found all our targets. The area above the second obelisk is good fortibetan Snowcock. Juste below the house near the top of the pass we found Red-fronted Rosefinch. China Sichuan

Mengbishan We plan to visit the area for 1.5 days and we had enough. We walked several time, on an afternoon and the next morning, the area between Km29 and Km23. We focused on this area because it s the best place to see the endmic Sichuan Jay and Crested Titwarbler (we missed it). The Jay is not easy and not very responsive to the tape, only the Giant Laughingthrush answered the Jay song, so be careful with heard-only tick. We spent 4 hours in the afternoon on the trail leaving from the house on the Km29. The descent is easy and goes through a good fir tree forest. This forest holds several Blood Pheasant. In the valley there is an area with low bushes. We flushed 1, maybe 2, Severtzov's Grouse(s) which fed on buds. Luckily I was able to have a very good look on a male running towards the forest. This area held also the endemic Chinese Fulvetta, very responsive to the tape but hard to see well. The rise is quite steep but by walking slowly it s not so hard, especially if you have already been to other mountain sites like we did. China Sichuan

Tibetan Plateau On the first day we went straight from Maerkang to Ruoergai. We made several stops along the road checking some water bodies and fileds. The weather was very bad the entire morning but the afternoon it has improved a bit and we were able to explore on foot some areas. The area starting 20 km before Hongyuan is good for Black-necked Crane. We had a group of 20 feeding together. 10 km after Hongyuan there is an area with low hills and low bushes, it s a good place for Pere David s Laughingthrush and Godlewski s Bunting. After taking the road towards Ruoergai you will soon start climbing a low hill. Just before this hill on your left hand side there is a rocky area. Here we found a pair of Tibetan Partridge. 10 km further there are some other hills on the left side of the road and here we saw Tibetan Snowfinch. The others Tibetan species are widespread and by stopping regularly along the road you will easily find them. A good area around Ruoergai is the road leaving towards Flower Lake. After the first hill there is a Ruoergai Marshes sign on the right of the road. Park there and walk uphill and you will access a good field with lots of White-rumped Snowfinch, here we had also a Rufous-necked Snowfinch. Along this road raptors are quite numerous. It s a good place for Cinereous Vulture. Around 10 km before the lake you will cross a field with low poles. It s where we had Saker Falcon. We didn t visit the lake itself but we walked in a field on the left side of the road roughly 1 km before it. It s a good spot for White-rumped Snowfinch, Saker Falcon, Brown-headed Gull and Tibetan Lark. On the other side of the road on a hill we found a Gray Wolf and 2 Himalayan Gazelle. China Sichuan

Baxi We spent 2 times 3 hours early morning in this area. It s a very nice place with hills and nice patch of scrubs. It s a good spot for several endemic species: Blue Eared-Pheasant, Plain and Sukatschev's Laughingthrush. The good area for the Phesant starts roughly 5 km from the main road Ruoergai Jiuzhaigou. 7 km from the main road, after passing a barrier near the first houses on your left there are several low hills. On the top of one we saw a party of 4 males Blue Eared-Pheasant feeding. We spent some time checking the scrubs on the other side of the road and it s where we found some trip exclusive species: Tiger Shrike, Black-naped Oriole and Black-winged Cuckoo-shrike. This is a mountain site, so there may be fog. The first morning was perfect but on the second we couldn t see the top of the hills. China Sichuan

We continued this road a little further (1km) until we reached some big fir trees on the right side of the road. Here we saw a pair of White-browed Tit-Warbler and 2 Godlewski s Bunting. After the village, the road passed through a very good fir forest with very tall trees. Here we saw several Snowy-browed Nuthatch. China Sichuan

Jiuzhaigou National Park Definitely it s not a good place for a birdwatcher but it s the only place where you can see «easily» 2 difficult species: Rufous-headed Robin and Pere David s Tit. All other specialities can be seen more easily outside of the park. If you want to have a chance to see Sukatschev's Laughingthrush and Blue-eared Pheasant you have to be the first at the top of the moutain and it s very difficult. The best approach, I think, is to see these 2 species before entering the park (see Baxi area information). The robin is easily heard along the Kezegou Valley trail but it s hard to have a look on it. We sat roughly 3 hours before having a view on a bird. It responds quite well to the tape. Advice : play the tape once it s far, but when it seems to move in your direction, stop playing and try to catch a movement on the ground. We tried for the tit around Pear Schoal but no sign of it, we finally found a displaying pair of this nice species near the top of the Kezegou Valley trail around 1,5 km from the main road in a nice forest with big pine trees. To reach the Kezegou Valley, stop with the bus at the Zechawa village and then walk around 3 km until you reach on your left side a «wooden path». Follow this path and pass the toilet block, 50 m further you will have on your left side a trail going into the forest. Another 50 m further your are in the good habitat for the robin. For the tit follow this trail until a first dam on your left, after this dam you enter in a good pine forest. Gong Gon Lin Pass This site is situated along the main road Ruoergai Jiuzhaigou, nearly 1 hour from the park. It s a high altitude birding site, around 3500 m. We spend several hours on this spot. 16 Daily logs Day 1: 21/05/2011 We took off on time and the flight went fine. Day 2: 22/05/2011 BEIJING + Road to LAOJUNSHAN NP (Weather: Hot) We arrive on time at Beijing and we pass quickly through customs. At Bruxelles they told us that our luggages will be directly transfer to Chengdu but it s not the case at all. Fortunately Eva saw our luggages ont the carpet! We registered them again. As we have some time before the next flight we exchange our Euro and we buy a Chinese phone card. We go outisde of the aiport and we see our first species of the trip: Common Swift ssp pekinensis. At 7.30 am we embark for the flight to Chengdu. At Chengdu airport we quickly met Mr Dai Bo and the Laojunshan team and we take the road. On the parking we see our first Light-vented Bulbul and the only Oriental Magpie-Robin of the trip. We drive from Chengdu airport to Er Ya Ping Guesthouse directly with the 4WD. On the road we don t stop for birding but we add some easy roadside species: Crested Myna, Asian House-Martin, Brownbreasted Bulbul, Common Magpie, Long-tailed Shrike and Gray Treepie. Around 4.30 pm we were at the Laojunshan NP headquarters in Pingshan. 30 minutes later we are on the road again for the first guesthouse. On the way we flush a female Silver Pheasant who give good but very brief view! In the evening we explore the area around the lodge, we hear lots of species but not many views on these birds! We see/hear Brownish-flanked Bush-warbler, Large-billed Leaf-Warbler (HO), Temminck s Tragopan (HO) and Lesser Cuckoo (HO). After the lunch we prepare a small bag for the next morning and we go to bed. Day 3: 23/05/2011 LAOJUNSHAN NP (Weather: Foggy and rains) Before the breakfast we explore the trail behind the guesthouse for a few hundred meters. We see Gray-faced Liocichla, Gray-headed Parrotbill, Reb-billed Leiothrix and Kloss's Leaf-Warbler. Around 8 am we are back at the guesthouse for the breakfast (noddles) and soon after we leave for the top. 50 m from the guesthouse a male Silver Pheasant cross the trail just in front of us. Wouaw!!! On the lower part we see few birds, best were Bay Woodpecker, Moutain Bulbul, Blue-throated Flycatcher, White-throated Laughingthrush and Lesser Cuckoo. It takes us at least 4 hours to reach the guesthouse. The steep steps are really a killer and with difficulty we reach the ridge. Once at the top the bird density is better! During the way to the guesthouse we add several new species: Golden-breasted and Streak-throated Fulvetta, White-backed and Gray-capped Woodpecker, Golden Parrotbill. Around 1 pm we have a lunch at the guesthouse and 45 min later we are back on the trail. China Sichuan

Day 4: 24/05/2011 LAOJUNSHAN NP (Weather: Rain and Fog - visibility less than 15m!) Due to a very bad weather we start late, around 7 am. The fog prevents us to see the trees surrounding the guesthouse. After the breakfast, the weather improved a bit and we go on the trail. We spent the entire day on the trail but the fog is still present and we can t see the birds in the canopy. We flush a female Temminck s Tragopan from the trail, a male is calling nearby and despite some taping he doesn t come in view. In the evening another Tragopan come in flight and land in a tree, 50 m from us. It s a young male. During the day we see Sichuan Patridge, Spotted Laughingthrush, Striated and Stripe-throated Yuhina, White-tailed Robin and Pacific Swift, Day 5: 25/05/2011 LAOJUNSHAN NP (Weather: Sunny) Drive to WAWUSHAN The weather is beautiful but unfortunately we have to leave around 10 am for Wawushan. At 6.15 am we are on the trail walking slowly. We have very few time but we manage to see some new species like Pygmy Cupwing. From the car between the Er Ya Ping Guesthouse and the start of the entrance road we see a Chinese Bamboo-Partridge. Sam s driver was on time and around am we leave for Wawushan. We pass through nice landscapes and we see several new species: Chinese Pond Heron and Oriental Greenfinch. Around 5 pm we are at the entrance of Wawushan, we drive slowly along the road but no sign of Pheasants. Day 6: 26/05/2011 WAWUSHAN (Weather: Cloudy + mist on top + rain as from 3pm) We start at 6 am from our hotel and we drive to km 16. As from this point we drive slowly and soon we find our first Lady Amherst s Pheasant next to the road. It s a young male unfortunately. We continue the road until km 12 and we walk. Soon we locate another target: Emei Leaf-Warbler. One is singing next to the road, after several minutes he offers us very good view. Other birds we see: Hair-crested Drongo, Yellow-bellied tit, Ashy-throated Warbler, Large-billed leaf-warbler, Claudia's Leaf-Warbler and Japanese White-eye. Around 7.30 am we are back at the restaurant to have our noddles-breakfast. The weather seems not so bad at the top so we take our chance and we embark for the summit. Just before arriving at the top we enter in a thick fog! We try first the trail going right from the cable car station. The fog is quite thick but we see Aberrant Bush-warbler and Sichuan Leaf- Warbler. After 500 m we decide to go back and to walk more in the forest, in the hope of having less fog. It was not the case. Despite the fog we saw see new species: Dark-sided, Ferruginous, Rufous-throated and a female Slaty-blue Flycatcher, Two-barred Warbler, Spotted Bush-Warbler, Bianchi s Warbler, 3 Threetoed Parrotbill and 1 Vinaceous Rosefinch. Around 2.30 pm we take the cable car down and at 3 pm we are around the hotel. It s raining so hard that we retreat in our room. Around 4 pm the rain stops and we are back in the field. We stop around km 19 and we walk along the road. François locates soon another Lady Amherst s Pheasant, a male this time, along the road but he is the only one to see it. We see some new species: Crimson-breasted Woodpecker and Yellow-browed Tit. China Sichuan

Day 7: 27/05/2011 WAWUSHAN (Weather: Sun + fog around 12 am, rain on lower elevation) Today the weather is better than yesterday. We explore the trail behind the Gongong Hotel. It s very muddy and difficult to follow. We see very few birds. At 7.30 am we take our breakfast and at 8 am we are back in the cable car. Once at the top the sun is shining, perfect weather! We take the trail on the left and we add soon new species: White-throated Needletail and Gray-crested Tit. We check each tree and finally we find a Treecreeper. Bingo, it s a Sichuan Treecreeper! We continue slowly in the forest and we find a group of Great Parrotbill. A bit further we meet a birdwatcher group and they tell us that they just saw a Red Panda near the temple. We go there straight but no sign of the panda. In the meantime the fog is coming back and the visibility drop again to few meters! We continue our way towards the cable car station and we hear the characteristic song of a Brown Bush-warbler. He is singing from the top of a bush. We continue the trail but the fog is thicker. We finally find a Brown Parrotbill but no sign of the Gray-hooded! Around 1.30 pm we are back at the bottom of the cable car. Despite the rain we decide to explore the lower part of the park. Nothing special except a Hodgson s Hawk-cuckoo and another Lady Amherst s Pheasant. Day 8: 28/05/2011 WAWUSHAN (Weather: Thick fog + some rain) For our last full day in the park the weather has not improved. We decide to explore in depth the area between km 19 and km 9. We see Spotted Forktail and Chinese Babax and we find a noisy group of Hymalayan Macaque feeding next to the road. We spend the rest of the day along the road just before the entrance gate. This road first follows the river and then goes up the hill. The river is normally a good spot for forktails but due to works next to the river (building of a pad) no birds were present. We see a Crested Goshawk and a Chinese Goshawk. We continue by car this road until we reach a rusty pipe that crosses the road. In the scrub on the right side of the road (very few bamboos) we hear an Ashy-throated Parrotbill but despite some taping we don t see the bird. Day 9: 29/05/2011 WAWUSHAN Road to Wolong Sawan (Weather: Thick fog + some rain) Today is our last chance to go to the top of the mountain but due to very bad weather we decide to drive directly to the entrance of the park. We go straight to the road near the entrance and we checked the scrub near the rusty pipe. We hear the characteristic calls of the Ashy-throated Parrotbill and finally we see a pair. The birds move and I decide to follow them, soon after I find 2 Chestnut-crowned Warbler. We find the only Brown Shrike of the trip around the Wawu Shan hotel. Despite some search, no sign of the Black-throated Yuhina. Around 9 am we take the road to Wolong, we will have thick fog all the way. We find an unexpected Spot-breasted Parrotbill on an electricity wire a few km s from the entrance of the park. A little further we find our first Black Drongo. We stop several times along the road and we find our first White-browed Laughingthrush. China Sichuan

We end the day at Sawan where we hear our first Golden Pheasant. We see also an Indian Blue Robin, a Collared Finchbill and the endemic Sooty Tit. Day 10: 30/05/2011 WUYIPENG (Weather: Foggy + rain as from 3pm) We leave the hotel at 4 am in order to be early at Balang Shan. Due to a landslide around km 76 we can t reach the good area for birding. We decide to visit Wuyipeng but as there is a group of birder with the permit to access this area for two days it means that guards will be at the ranger station. We decide to explore the area from the bottom until the ranger station. We hear several Golden Pheasant and as one is calling not far from us we leave the trail in order to get closer. Finally we find a gorgeous male calling from a low tree. Birding is quite slow but we see some new species: Rufous-bellied Niltava, Eurasian Nutcracker, and lots of Chinese Leaf-Warbler. We heard a Firethroat singing not far but despite some tapping we don t see it. On the ridge between the top of the stairs and the ranger station we encounter a good flock and we find a male Fire-capped Tit. We see also a Scaly-breasted Cupwing. Day 11: 31/05/2011 BALANG SHAN PASS (Weather: Snow -> sunny as from 11am) Again we leave the hotel at 4 am. We stop several times to remove rocks from the road but we finally can reach the mountains. At 5.25 am we are at km 94. The weather is not good at first sight, snow falls and there are 2 cm snows on the ground but in facts it s easier to find birds! Soon as we left the car we heard the Wood Snipe roding. We try a while to see her but it s very difficult. Some of us saw a silhouette but that s all! Frustrating At 7 am we are at km 92 (just before the tunnel when coming from the mountain pass). Here we have a good view on the best area for pheasants. Verreaux's Partridges are calling everywhere and we soon find at least 5, then we find a male White-eared Pheasant calling from a rock before he flies into an open grass place where he stays for 1 hour! At least 3 Koklass Pheasant are calling but despite continuous searches we can t see one! We finally see the most wanted bird of the area: Chinese Monal. A couple is feeding on the top of a ridge 300 m from us. Thanks to the 60x scope we had a very good sighting. Other birds in the area: Snow Pigeon, White-backed Thrush, Blue-fronted Redstart, Rosy Pipit and Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch. Around 9 am we drive to the pass and we see Red-billed and Yellow-billed Chough, Alpine Accentor, Rufous-breasted Accentor, Plain and Black-headed Mountain-Finch. Just below the pass, near a stone monument, we find a Tibetan Snowcock feeding. A little further we see a flock of at least 50 Grandala in flight and at least 30 feeding. Below the Tibetan house we find 1 male and 2 females Red-fronted Rosefinch. We then drive back and along the road we see Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon, Common Buzzard, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Hobby, Chestnut Thrush and 2 Buff-throated Warbler. In the afternoon we walk between Km 92 and the Km 88 but the bird activity is very slow. We add only Hill Pigeon and a male Himalayan Bluetail. China Sichuan

Day 12: 01/06/2011 WUYIPENG (Weather: Sun -> rain as from 3pm) At 6.15 am we are at the bottom of the trail. We walk as fast as we can and around 8 am we are on the ridge. During the climb we stop for Barred Laughingthrush and for a Firethroat, who after some efforts some of us have a good view on it. There is no guard on the ranger station and then we take the trail behind the house. On the first part of the trail we see almost no bird except a Tibetan Siskin and some Slaty-backed Flycatcher. Soon as we reach the bamboo area, birds are more numerous. We find some species missed at Wawu Shan like Fulvous Parrotbill and Black-faced Laughingthrush. We see a Three-toed Parrotbill and a Sichuan Treecreeper, 2 species not so common at this place. The best species of the day is not a bird but a mammal: a RED PANDA. Eva found him lying on a branch of a tall fir tree. We observe it for at least 30 minutes before it descends into to the bamboo and disappear. WAOUW!!! Maybe my most wanted species for this trip We continue the trail until the top and 50 m before it we heard a song that nobody knows. We used the pushing technique and after 10 seconds the bird comes in view. It s a gorgeous male Whitebrowed Shortwing. Around 4 pm we walk back to the car. The descend is uneventful except 2 Speckled Wood-Pigeon. Day 13: 02/06/2011 BALANGSHAN (Weather: Fog at mid elevation - Sun at top) We leave again the hotel at 4 am and we are at Km 94 around 5.30 am. The fog is thick and no chance to see the Wood Snipe, but we heard it again. At Km 92 it s the same. We heard Koklass Pheasant calling but due the thick fog we can t see the place from where they call. We drive down the mountain until we leave the fog and from Km 90 we walk along the road. Soon we add some species: Common, Dark-breasted and Chinese White-browed Rosefinch, Olive-backed Pipit. A Plain-backed Thrush is calling from the top of a fir tree. Around the white obelisk, at Km 88, we find a calling Giant Laughingthrush. On a top of a fir tree I finnd a male Collared Grosbeak and next to him a first year male Crimson-browed Finch. We drive to the mountain pass in the hope of finding the Snow Partridge but no sign of it. We find a singing White-tailed Rubythroat and we see 2 Golden Eagle. Around 4 pm we are at Sawan and with lots of difficulties we find a trail going into the forest. By crossing a cultivated area I flush a Yellow-legged Buttonquail. Unfortunately the rest of the group does not see it. In a flock we find a single Chestnut-flanked White-eye. We continue the trail until we reach the ridge where we encounter a noisy flock of 10 Collared Grosbeak. On the way back, in a flock we finally locate 2 male Slaty Bunting. Day 14: 03/06/2011 Road to Rilong and then to Maerkang (Weather: Fog at mid elevation - Sun) We leave the hotel a bit later today, around 5 am. Once again the area around Km is foggy. We heard Wood Snipe and Koklass Pheasant at Km92. We stop several times along the road but nothing special. We go over the mountain pass and we see our first Himalayan Marmot. China Sichuan

We make a stop around Km 134 where we see 2 Wallcreeper next to the road. Several Whitethroated Redstart are in the area. We cross the beautiful town of Rilong and then we take the direction of Maerkang, along the way we see 2 Yellow-streaked Warbler, a male Hodgson s Redstart, a male Daurian Redstart and several Blue Rock-Thrush. Around 3 pm we are at Mengbishan. We observe in the rain Ashy Drongo, Goldcrest and several Lemon-rumped Warbler. Around km 27 we see a couple of Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker. At 5 pm it s raining so hard that we leave the area. We reach Maerkang under downpours! Day 15: 04/06/2011 MENGBISHAN (Weather: Fog at the top -> Sun -> Rain as from 5pm) We leave Maerkang around 5.15 am and due to a police check we arrived at the summit around 6.30 am. Along the way we see an Oriental Turtle-Dove. During the entire morning we will walk several times betweend Km 29 and Km 26. We see Black Woodpecker, Northern Goshawk, Sichuan Jay, Winter Wren, Buff-barred Warbler, Maroon-backed Accentor and White-winged Grosbeak. The Sichuan Jay is not easy but after seeing 2 birds far away in the canopy, we finally see at least 4 more different birds. We spend the afternoon on the trail starting from the only house situated just below the pass and going through an open field and then a good forest. During this walk we see 2 Blood Pheasant in the fir forest. In the first scrub area we flush at least 2 big birds. I manage to see one of those and it turns to be a Severtzov's Grouse, certainly feeding on buds. We continue the trail until a quite flat area with lots of decidious low trees. There we tape out a Chinese Fulvetta, after some effort everyone has seen it well. In this area we see also a male Gray-headed Bullfinch and a White-throated Dipper. Day 16: 05/06/2011 HONGYUAN - RUOERGAI (Weather: Rain -> Sunny) We leave Maerkang at 5 am under a heavy rain. It will rain the entire morning. The pass just before the Tibetan plateau is covered with fresh snow, fortunately the road is ok. Once on the plateau we quickly find our first target: Black-necked Crane. Two birds are feeding close to the road. A marshy area nearby holds some birds: Ruddy Shelduck, Common Redshank and Common Tern. A little further we observe our first Upland Buzzard and in a nearby field Oriental and Horned Lark. Black Kites hunt over the fields and a groupd of 40 Daurian Jackdaw is feeding close to the road. Just before Hongyuan we observe a Ground Tit and next to it there are Black Redstart and Siberian Stonechat. We don t stop in this town; we take directly the road to Ruoergai. 10 km from Hongyuan we explore an area with low scrub and there we find 2 males Godlewski s Bunting and a couple of Pere David s Laughingthrush. Along the way we see also Graylag Goose, Eurasian Hoopoe, Brown-headed Gull and Azure-winged Magpie. On a rocky area near Km 51 sign we find an unexpected couple of Tibetan Partridge. A little further away we have a rewarding stop with Tibetan Lark, Rock Petronia and 2 males Citrine Wagtail ssp calcarata. A few km before Ruoergai, we find a couple of Tibetan Snowfinch and some Little Owl. China Sichuan

We see several Tibetan Fox and many Himalayan Marmots along the way. Day 17: 06/06/2011 BAXI RUOERGAI to FLOWER LAKE (Weather: Sun) We plan to spend the entire day between Ruoergai to Flower Lake but as Baxi area is only 20 km from Ruoergai we decide to start first at Baxi. We leave the hotel around 6.30 am and we are at Baxi around 7 am. The area starting 5 km from the main road Ruoergai Jiuzhaigou, just before the toll gate, is good for Blue-eared Pheasant. We see our first Ring-necked Pheasant of the trip. We scan each grassy area on hills and finally we find 4 male Blue Eared-Pheasant feeding on a top of a hill. They are quite distant but with the scope we have an excellent view! The road is lined by fields and good bushes. We spent a few hours in this area and we finaly see our other target: Sukatschev s Laughingthrush. Two are presents together with Elliot s and Giant Laughingthrush. In this area we find 2 others unexpected species: a male Black-naped Oriole and a Black-winged Cuckoo-shrike. The latter is chased by all the birds, included Songar Tit. Around 9.30 am we take the road towards Flower Lake via Ruoergai. Soon as we leave Ruoergai, François sees a Snowfinch crossing the road. We stop and check the area where it flew. Soon we find the bird: it s a Rufous-necked Snowfinch. This area holds also Twite, lots of Pica and a colony of White-rumped Snowfinch. The weather is very hot today and it s good for raptors. In a group of Himalayan Vutlure a Cinereous Vulture is circling. 5 kms before the Lake it s a good area for raptors with lots of poles in the fields. By scanning all of them we finally find a Saker Falcon. The Flower Lake seems not so promising so we prefer to walk in a field 1 km before the entrance to the lake. This area is full of White-rumped Snowfinch. Not far from the lake some Tibetan Lark are displaying. An adult Black Stork and then a Saker Falcon fly just above us. The falcon lands on a pole 50 m from us. It even allows us to approach it until 20 m. On the other side of the road, François find 2 Himalayan Gazelle and when checking the nearby hill I find a WOLF lying on a marmot burrow. In a nearby marshy area, a couple of Mallard is feeding. Another top day! Day 18: 07/06/2011 BAXI ROAD TO JIUZHAIGOU (Weather: Sun) We are back in Baxi and the top of the hills are covered by thick fog so we didn t see the Blue Eared- Pheasant today. Along the way I notice a small shrike on an electric wire, it s a Tiger Shrike. We spend several hours in the same area but nothing more than yesterday. We continue a little further along the road and we stop just before the village. The area is still good and we find a pair of White-browed Tit-Warbler that gives us excellent view! It s time now to leave for a long journey to Jiuzhaigou National Park. Our driver told us that we don t need to go back to the main road Ruoergai Jiuzhaigou but we can continue via this road. 2 km after Baxi there is a very good fir trees forest. We walk along the road and soon Eva finds a Snowy-browed Nuthatch. We see no less than 5 individuals! We see also our only Great Tit of the trip. China Sichuan

The journey via this road is uneventful except the very bad state of this road. I think it s better to take the main road. We arrive in Jiuzhaigou around 3 pm. After checking in the hotel it s time to go birding around the town. We went to a good place for Spectacled Fulvetta. After some taping, one individual responds. It takes at least half hour before having a good view of a pair! Day 19: 08/06/2011 JIUZHAIGOU NP (Weather: Sun) At 7.45 am we are at the entrance of the park and it s crowded. We quickly buy our entrance ticket and met the owner of the B&B where we will sleep tonight. He shows us on the map where to get off the bus. We go by bus to stop and he is there waiting for us. We visit his pension and rooms are perfect to stay a night! After the traditional welcome tea we are ready to visit the park. We go back to the bus stop but it s not possible to take the bus to "Center station" there, we must walk until the next bus stop. We walk on the wooden path with hundreds of people around us!!! Once at the bus stop we take a bus and I ask the hostes to drop us a Zechawa Village. They forget us and we arrive at Long Lake. We make 2 pictures of this site and we try to catch a bus to Zechawa Village but it s not possible! We must walk to the next stop. Grrrrr. It s already 11 am and we haven t seen any bird! On the next stop we take one and I ask at the hostes to drop us at Primeval Lake, it s not possible because there is no stop there. They drop us at Zechawa Village and then we walk back the 3 km until the Kezegou Valley Trail. We find easily the trail. At pm we were on the trail and we soon heard the song of a Rufous-headed Robin. In the next 3 hours we try to see it. Finally only I have a very good view on it, roughly 15 seconds of observations in 3 hours. Eva has a quick glimpse of the bird but François can t see it! In order to catch the last bus we leave the area around 4 pm. We take a bus at Zechawa Village and we stop at Around 5pm it begins to rain, this will continue the entire night. In the evening we negotiate, with the help of Sam, a taxi to go to Hidden trail the next morning around 5 am. We have a good supper at the pension. Day 20: 09/06/2011 JIUZHAIGOU NP (Weather: Rain until 10am -> sunny) It s raining so hard that we decide to wait until the weather improves. Around 8 am the rain stopped and we walk to the Rhinoceros Lake to catch a bus to the top. We drive directly to Pear Shoal Falls. There are no many people on the trail and without any problem we take the Forbidden Trail. In the meantime rain starts again. We stay on this trail from 9 am until 11 am. Nothing special except several Snowy-browed Nuthatch in tits flocks. We spend again the afternoon in the Kezegou Valley but we follow the trail until the fir forest. In this nice forest we finally find a displaying pair of the endemic Pere David s Tit. Other bird of interest around is a pair of Sooty Tit. Around 3.30 pm we walk back to Zechawa Village when a bus stopped along the road to take us. It s exceptional because normally they never stop between 2 stops. We stop at Water Falls to pick up our stuff at the B&B and then we take a bus to the entrance. China Sichuan

Day 21: 10/06/2011 Road JIUZHAIGOU NP to Chengdu + Du Fu Cottage Park (Weather: Sun) We leave the hotel at 5 am and when we are waiting the driver we heard an Indian Nightjar singing from the mountain. We are going directly to Gong Gong Lin Pass and we reach the place around 6 am. We stop once on the plateau and we walk in the flat area with low scrub. Several pairs of Dusky Warbler are displaying and busy with nest construction. We find also two singing male of Siberian Rubythroat. The White-browed Tit is sometimes seen around but we didn t find it. We decide to take the road for Chengdu and we stop again several kms later at the first fir forest on the right side of the road. It s our last chance for this endemic. We spend 1 hour in this exploited fir forest and we finally find a distant singing White-browed Tit. A Chinese Thrush is singing from the top of a fir tree. We see at least 2 pairs of Blood Pheasant with chicks. In the late afternoon we make a quick visit to the Du Fu Cottage Park. We arrive around 4.30 pm so it means that we have only 1.30 hour to explore the area. We see a party of Black-throated Tit and numerous Vinous-throated parrotbill. We taped out a beautiful Rufous-faced Warbler. When driving to our hotel we see flying Gray Heron and Black-crowned Night-Heron. China Sichuan
