Ruby Throated Hummingbirds By Anastasia Yates

Introduction Ruby Throated Hummingbirds are one of the many species of hummingbirds. It s scientific name is Archilochus colubris and common name is Hummingbird. This bird is the most common hummingbird in Eastern-North America and is very beautiful. Its Ruby-red colored throat is where it got its name from and how it is recognized. Eating nectar from flowers and pollinating other flowers is it s hobby. J

Appearance Adult male Ruby throated hummingbirds have a scaly appearance with a red or ruby throat as it suggests in the name. An emerald shimmery green color vest like feathers. The Ruby Throated hummingbird is the size of a teacup and weigh 2 to 6 grams. There eggs are tiny white, weighing half a gram or less then 1/5 of an once. The female Ruby throated hummingbird has a grey, plain color and white tipped tail. It has curve pointed wings, the female is spotted with and emerald. [Comparison of a key and the hummingbirds eggs]

Habitat The Ruby Throated Hummingbird live and breed in the woodland of eastern North America. The woodland is a great place for flowers to grow and hummingbirds to feed on them, pollinating many plants in the process. Hummingbirds spend there winter in Mexico and Central America, to get there the hummingbirds have to fly across the gulf of Mexico in a marathon distance flight. The Ruby throated Hummingbird is the most common species of hummingbird in Eastern North America.

Changing Habitats We do not want our future generation of Hummingbirds to be killed off! L

Ecosystems The hummingbird lives in the temperate deciduous forest for most of the seasons and heading off to the Tropical Rainforest for Winter, this being in Eastern North America. Here are some Interactions in that ecosystem: - A biotic interaction in a hummingbirds ecosystem is the hummingbird and flowers. The hummingbird feed off the flowers and pollinate other plants, that s another biotic interaction. - The female hummingbirds build their nests on a tree, usually in deciduous tree such as oak and birch trees. This being a biotic interaction. Because the tree is keeping the eggs safe to predators. - Another biotic interaction is a hummingbird killing bugs or insects for food to eat.

Diet Ruby Throated Hummingbirds are omnivores, eating bugs, insects and nectar from flowers (this being their main food source). People will often have a Hummingbird feeder hanging from a tree with a mixture of water and nectar in it for the hummingbirds to feed on. Hummingbirds need sugar to maintain their metabolism and insects or spiders to get their protein. Hummingbirds have adapted over time to eat nectar from flowers, by using their long tongues and beaks to consume the nectar. Hummingbirds have to eat over half their body weight in sugars each day to fuel their metabolism. "Hummers need nectar to power the bug eating machine that they are." - Bob Sargent

Food Chains & Food Webs Food Web In this food web the water, sunlight, plant and growth is at the bottom transferring the energy to the smaller insects eventually getting to the top of the food web where the cat is an example of the hummingbirds predator. Predators The Ruby Throated hummingbird has been killed and/or eaten by various plants or animals such as the Sharp-shinned Hawk, Green & Bull frogs, Orb weaving spiders, Praying Mantis and fish. They have also been impaled by cactus and killed by other plants.

Flight The Ruby Throated hummingbirds wings beat times per second and up to 200 times per second when diving. Hummingbirds have lots of control over their flight ability, stopping instantly and flying backwards, adjusting their position and flying at incredible speeds. They can also fly UPSIDE DOWN! Here is a video: Ed7_MkDc

Taxonomy The Ruby Throated Hummingbirds scientific name is Archilochus colubris and belong to the (bird) Aves Family.

MRS GREN M Movement R Respire S Senses G Grow R Reproduce E Excrete N Nutrition Humming Birds are living things :)

Classification Ruby Throated Hummingbirds belongs to the Bird Group or to be more specific, Apodiformes. The Apodiformes group has three families: the swifts, tree swifts and hummingbirds. The Ruby Throated Hummingbird obviously fits into the hummingbird family. Apart from that, the hummingbird belongs to the bird group as it has feathers and wings to fly. It lays eggs and has two legs, as well as warm blood and ear holes. The Ruby Throated Hummingbird looks very similar to Anna s Hummingbird with it s pink throat: [Ruby Throated Hummingbird] [Anna s Hummingbird]

Conclusion In conclusion the Ruby Throated Hummingbird is a bird that is found in parts of North eastern America and feeds off flowers and bugs. Changing habitats causes due to loss of food and home. Interactions in the ecosystem are mainly biotic. The rules in MRS GREN say that the hummingbird is a living thing. Overall the Ruby Throated Hummingbird is a cute and amazing animal!
