THE ROSARY The bed where I lie has become my church. The Rosary is my spiritual practice. What is the purpose of a spiritual practice? Surely it should draw us upwards into a higher state of being. The life of the spirit. The Rosary indeed fulfills that role. Yet I have come to realize that it can not only give meaning to us and sustain us in this life, it may even rescue us from actual death. For most of the past twelve months I have been completely bedridden. I eat awkwardly on a tray since I can t even sit up. I m as dependent as a baby. (Yet I feel like one of the blessed elderly because I m cared for at home by family.) I feel a special bond with Immaculée Ilibagiza who clung to her Rosary for three months while hiding in Rwanda during the genocide. For three months eight women squeezed into a small bathroom so crowded they could not even stretch out. Immaculée s book, The Rosary: The Prayer That Saved My Life, offers a moving account of the power that sustained her through the terror. She credits having emerged alive from the ordeal to the Rosary. The Rosary was Immaculée s lifeline as it is for me since I have been bedridden. It must have been around the turn of the millennium when I felt drawn to pick up my rosary again after more than a forty year lapse. My godmother had given the circlet of Job s Tears beads to me when I was baptized a Catholic at age twenty. The beads were intact but the links had rusted from disuse. I began to finger the rust away, praying during my daily hike 1

alongside the creek that flows into Crestone, Colorado. At that time Pope John Paul II had just given us a new set of Mysteries for the Rosary, the Mysteries of Light. He was soon to proclaim the Year of the Rosary. As I offered my prayers, I felt caught up in events around the globe. Events beyond my small design. I believe our earth will undergo the great Tribulation as foretold by Jesus. He warned us to watch for signs in world happenings in order to be prepared. When the great trial of the earth takes place, we will all be caught up in events beyond our small designs. The Rosary is a form of reflective prayer focused on events in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. The Rosary includes teachings of the Church regarding Mary, the mother of Jesus, and events in her life, too. These meditations are grouped into four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Rather than vain repetition, the prayers of the Rosary dissolved into contemplation as I progressed along the spiritual journey. I found myself carried beyond the events of some two thousand years ago to their magnified happenings throughout earthly time and space and especially in today s world. In her apparitions around the globe, Mary implores us to pray the Rosary daily. Although we cannot know the exact day or hour for the coming Tribulation, Jesus told us we need to prepare through prayer for what is to take place. Jesus advised us to pray. Mary urges us to pray. I foresee the world will need a lifeline during the overwhelming time to come. The crucifixion of Jesus will expand in scale to become the Crucifixion of the Mystical Body of the Lord s great Coming 2

during the Tribulation. We are members of that Body. In the darkest days after my spine collapsed, sending my heart into a tailspin of abnormal beats, I was too weak and demoralized to pray. I did not know if I would ever be able to walk again. I relied on the prayers of others. But just as soon as I gained a little strength, the Rosary attracted me like a magnet. No other form of devotion or prayer appealed to me. Not centering prayer or my own version of centering prayer. Not any other form of meditation that I knew, and I know several. Only the Rosary satisfied my soul s longing. 3

THE SCAPULAR Catholic tradition tells us that the Blessed Mother gave us two physical objects, the Rosary and the Scapular. Because we are material creatures in a physical universe, we need sensory input. Touching the beads soothed my distress. I could hang on to the circle of beads. I feel fortunate to have received the Rosary as my spiritual practice. It fulfills me. Yet I wanted the other half of the gift from the Blessed Mother. I wanted her Scapular. The brown Scapular in its original form was a full-sized work apron. Over hundreds and hundreds of years the Scapular shrank. The Scapular, as worn by most Catholics today, is made of two pieces of fabric about the size of postage stamps, joined by a string. The string goes around the neck and the pieces of fabric hang in the front, one on each side. Wearing the Scapular is a devotion richly blessed. Years ago I had a strong desire to wear the brown Scapular in its original full size. (I never felt drawn to wear the small size Scapular.) I tried to sew one but the results were a disaster. I have little skill at dressmaking. Eventually, right before my heart attack in 2012, I hired a dressmaker to make a pattern and to sew a brown Scapular. When it was finished, I was too ill to put it on. Although I will never be able to wear the Scapular because of my present health circumstances, I sense its significance. I believe that the Scapular in its present small size is a code from the past. Throughout the passage of many centuries, the small Scapular has preserved a key message from our Blessed Mother. Now, I believe, is the time to activate her message in the code. My 4

children, put on my work apron and work for the earth and its peoples. WORK. Our Blessed Mother has the title Queen of Earth. I m not surprised that her Scapular is brown, the color of earth. I picture the work apron worn for special work projects, not everyday use. I imagine it about the size of a regular apron, just below the knees. Wearing the Scapular in its small size has been a blessed devotion. Wearing the full-size Scapular and working for God will surely shower us with blessings. I believe it will be the spark and visual sign to attract both Christians and non- Christians of goodwill to join together for work projects. 5

PRAYER AND WORK The Rosary and the Scapular. Prayer and work. Two powerfilled spiritual practices given to us to carry us through the Tribulation. I remember the first time I saw a picture of the Blessed Mother holding her Rosary in one hand and her Scapular in the other. She lovingly extended the Rosary and Scapular to us. The picture spoke directly to my heart. The caption beneath the picture startled me. It said, One Day With My Rosary And My Scapular I Will Save The World. I was disturbed when I first read these words. I thought to myself, but Jesus already saved the world. Then I came to realize the meaning in Mary s promise. Jesus saves souls. Jesus, the divine Son of God, died on the cross to give us the gift of eternal salvation. Jesus saves souls. Jesus will continue to save souls. Mary s promise is to save the world through her Rosary and her Scapular. Mary s amazing words were uttered hundreds of years ago, it is said, by Saint Dominic in a prophecy concerning Blessed Mother Mary and what she would one day do. Here is the story: There is a church in Rome which has a chapel honoring the chance meeting of three men who were all later to be declared saints. The men were Dominic, Francis, and Angeles. Followers of each of these men were supposedly present. Friar Dominic was busy recruiting members for his new religious order. Brother Francis was especially beloved of the poor who followed him (as well as the birds and the animals). Brother Angeles had been invited to Rome from Mt. Carmel in Palestine because of his fame as a preacher. 7

The Holy Spirit arranged the meeting, it is said, because each of the three men recognized the others. They made prophecies to each other. Some of the followers who were present recorded the prophecies which were spoken at that time. St. Angeles foretold the stigmata of St. Francis. St. Dominic spoke to St. Angeles saying, One day, Brother Angeles, to your order of Carmel, the Most Blessed Virgin Mary will give a devotion to be known as the brown Scapular. And to my order of Preachers she will give a devotion to be known as the Rosary. AND ONE DAY, THROUGH THE ROSARY AND THE SCAPULAR, SHE WILL SAVE THE WORLD. If the world is what Mother Mary will save through her two gifts, what will she save it from, and when, if not from destruction during the Tribulation? I believe that the Rosary and the Scapular are critical for our very survival. Jesus predicted the Tribulation. Sooner or later the earth and its peoples will have to endure the time of great devastation. Jesus told us that unless the days of the Tribulation would be shortened, no living creatures would survive. (Matthew 24:22) That s the bad news. We will not all survive the Tribulation. The good news is : Those who do survive may enter the first light of the Millennium, the thousand year reign of peace on earth. I like to reflect on the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, especially the great Resurrection which, I believe, is the great Millennium, and will occur right after the great Crucifixion. I think about the survivors of the Tribulation who will be filled with the Spirit of Christ to bring the kingdom of peace to earth. 8

In 1917 at Fatima, Portugal, the Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children. She told the little visionaries to pray the Rosary every day for world peace. Prayer for peace is the beginning and foundation for fulfilling the Lord s will of Christ s Kingdom of Peace to come to earth. We need: Peace within us. Peace around us. Peace with the earth. We need all three. Peace within us comes when we turn to God in prayer. Peace around us comes when we, more and more as one, turn to God in prayer. Peace with the earth comes when we, more and more as one, begin to labor for our planet with prayerfilled goodness and care. 9

PREPARE BY PROMOTING PRAYER Prayer will be our refuge during the unknown coming time of intense global suffering, the Tribulation, as foretold by Jesus. With so much death and destruction, we will likely feel abandoned by God. The Blessed Mother s Rosary is an antidote to falling into despair. Her Rosary is a prayer of hope. The Glorious Mysteries triumph over the Sorrowful. What do we need to do in order to spread the Rosary as a world prayer? Today large numbers of Catholics do not even know how to pray the Rosary. Jesus told us to ask and we would receive. Permanently confined to bed, I wondered how I could possibly contribute anything useful other than prayer. Sleepless one night, I was made aware of an easy way to learn the Mysteries through four pictures. 10

SUMMARY OF THE EASY METHOD TO LEARN THE ROSARY My purpose for writing this section has been to show what I believe to be an easy method for teaching others how to learn the Rosary. This effort is a work in progress which I hope others will refine and perfect, or go beyond into a better method. It is much easier to learn new information if we can attach it to something we already know in our minds, and especially if we can picture it. So let us look at four trees. The picture above each tree can be quickly recalled to memory, and should become associated with the third event in its set in the Rosary. (See illustrations.) 11

SUMMARY OF THE EASY METHOD TO LEARN THE ROSARY: Present the 4 trees in a row. Each tree will have a different picture above it. The number 3 will be inside each tree at the top and will be in bold. Lower down inside each tree will be the name of each tree (Joy Light Sorrow Glory) for the four sets of Mysteries: Joyous, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. Become familiar with the 4 trees in a row and the pictures above them. Hold up a rosary by the Glory Be beads on each side of the 3 rd decade. Point to the number 3 on the trees and call attention to it. Explain that this 3 rd decade of the Rosary is the key Mystery to learn. Next, place beneath each tree the description of the 3 rd Mystery which corresponds to the picture above that tree. The number 3 in the trees refers to the Third Mystery of its set. Here are all the Third Mysteries. Christ Is Born The Coming of God s Kingdom Jesus is Crowned with Thorns The Holy Spirit Descends Learn each of these Third Mysteries of its set. 12

Now we are ready to study all the other Mysteries. See the list of Mysteries 1 through 5 of each set. Place inside the Joy Tree numbers 1 through 5, one by one as they are learned. Imagine the other trees having numbers 1 through 5 placed inside them too. (Number 3 is already in the tree.) As already noted this method will be effective because it is much easier to learn new information if we can relate it to what we already know, and especially if we can picture it. Memory aids and other guides are given in the next section Timeline and Other Memory Aids which explains the method more completely and lists all the other Mysteries. Actually doing this method is simple. The reason I advise holding up a Rosary on each end of the 3 rd decade is so it can be seen that it marks the middle of the five decades. 13

TIMELINE AND OTHER MEMORY AIDS In this section I have kept descriptions of the Mysteries to a bare minimum in most cases. Where I did add any details it was to bring life to the stories as a whole. My focus has been on how to teach the Mysteries of the Rosary, plus at the same time to teach the order in which they are prayed, all of which is taught using the Easy Method to Learn the Rosary. Learning the prayers of the Rosary may be a separate task. Usually the prayers become familiar through hearing and repetition at church or in religious education classes. Many Catholics already know the three main prayers. (The Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be prayers.) Learning which prayers to pray with which beads is fun and goes quickly with a little practice. There are only four trees, each tree standing for a different type of the Mysteries: Joyful Luminous (light) Sorrowful Glorious So we have four sets of Mysteries. There are five Mysteries in each set. Each picture above a tree illustrates the Third Mystery of that type. See the number 3 at the top of every tree. These Third Mysteries are the events to fix firmly in the mind. The Third Mysteries will anchor the others and place them in the order where they belong. (See the Summary of the Easy Method to learn the Rosary.) Now we will add the other numbers of 1 through 5 on the Joy Tree one by one as we learn the Mysteries. (See the 14

illustration.) Each number stands for a Mystery. Imagine the other trees having the other numbers added also. The numbers fall on a timeline of what happened in real life some two thousand years ago when Jesus and Mary walked on the earth. Please note The Third Mysteries are all typed in bold in the following list of all the Mysteries. Read on. THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES 1. The Angel comes to Mary. 2. Mary visits Elizabeth. 3. Christ is born. 4. Baby Jesus is presented in the temple. 5. Jesus is found in the temple. THE MYSTERIES OF LIGHT (The Luminous Mysteries) 1. Jesus is baptized in the river Jordan. 2. Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding at Cana. 3. The Coming of God s Kingdom. 4. Jesus is transfigured on the mountain. 5. Jesus gives his Apostles Holy Communion. 15

SORROWFUL MYSTERIES 1. Jesus, in agony, prays in the garden. 2. Jesus is whipped at the pillar. 3. Jesus is crowned with thorns. 4. Jesus carries the Cross. 5. Jesus is crucified. GLORIOUS MYSTERIES 1. Jesus rises from the dead. 2. Jesus ascends into heaven. 3. The Holy Spirit descends. 4. Mary is assumed into heaven. 5. Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth. 16

THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES The First Joyful Mystery of the Rosary opens with a beautiful vision. An angel appears on earth to a young maiden named Mary. The Glorious Being, after calming Mary s fears, gives her remarkable news. From among all women, she has been given the high honor to conceive the Christ Child. Even more remarkable, this baby will not have an earthly father. The Holy Spirit will overshadow Mary, and she will then conceive. With God, all things are possible, the angel tells Mary. The Being informs Mary that her cousin Elizabeth has conceived in her old age and is now already six months pregnant. This First Joyful Mystery which is such a happy event is known as The Annunciation. The Second Joyful Mystery is called The Visitation. Mary, without delay, travels across the country to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is pregnant with a son to be named John. The Third Joyful Mystery is the birth of Christ. Memory Aid: Timeline The First, Second and Third Mysteries fall in sequence and are easy to recall when praying the Rosary. First Jesus is conceived. Next, Mary, pregnant with Jesus, visits Elizabeth who is pregnant, and then Jesus is born. In the Fourth Joyful Mystery, baby Jesus is presented in the temple. (As it was written in the Law of the Lord, every male child who opens the womb was holy to the Lord God.) This event, as the previous three events, makes sense only in sequence. Obviously, the baby must be born before he can be taken to the temple. In the Fifth Joyful Mystery, Jesus is found in the temple after Mary and Joseph have searched for him for three days. Again, this event falls on the timeline. Jesus is twelve years old now. 17

THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES The Mysteries of Light begin with Jesus standing in the River Jordan. John, Elizabeth s son, is baptizing Jesus. Even though Jesus, the Son of God who is free of sin, never needed spiritual purification, he set an example for the rest of us who do by allowing himself to be baptized. The Second Mystery of Light features water, too, only in this case Jesus is changing water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Memory Aid: Water can help us link the first two Luminous Mysteries together in our memory - - the water of Jesus baptism followed by the water-turned-into-wine at the wedding. (The water in both cases has deep symbolic meaning.) The Third Mystery of Light is the coming of God s Kingdom. We announce the coming of God s kingdom to earth and give the call for hearts to turn to the Lord. Let us keep in mind the sketch above the Luminous Tree of rainbow light emerging from a cloud. We can imagine God s kingdom coming from heaven. In the Fourth Mystery of Light, which occurred on a mountain in front of his closest Apostles, Jesus is transfigured. His body begins to shine brighter and brighter until the Apostles cannot look upon such intense brilliance. Two deceased persons from heaven carry on a conversation with Jesus. The Fifth Mystery of Light is Holy Communion (the Eucharist). Memory Aid: Light. The Third Mystery, the coming of God s Kingdom, is symbolized with rainbow light and ties in with the light radiating from Jesus on the mountain (Fourth Mystery). We can also tie light to the last (Fifth) Luminous Mystery since Christ Jesus is the Light of the world in Holy Communion. 18

Light is our memory link for the last three Mysteries of Light just as water is our memory link for the first two Mysteries of Light. Summary of Memory Aids Water 1. Jesus baptism 2. Water-into-wine Light 3. Kingdom of God 4. Jesus transfiguration 5. Holy Communion 19

THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES The Sorrowful Mysteries of Our Savior s suffering cover the hours before and during the crucifixion. The First Sorrowful Mystery is usually called the The Agony in the Garden. Jesus prays with such distress of spirit that he sweats blood. Three times he asks his Heavenly Father to release him from his cup of suffering, but each time he adds in prayer that the will of his Father in heaven be done. In the Second Sorrowful Mystery, Jesus is tied to a pillar and whipped without mercy. This Mystery is most often called The Scourging at the Pillar. A scourge whip which has sharp metal attachments at the end tears flesh from the body, causing much worse injury than a plain whip. When Jesus is being scourged, blood flows heavily from his body. The Third Sorrowful Mystery is the Crowning of Thorns. A crown of jagged thorns pierces the head of Jesus. Blood drips down his face. The Fourth Sorrowful Mystery sees Jesus carrying his cross to the place of the crucifixion. This Mystery is commonly known as The Way of the Cross. The Fifth Sorrowful Mystery is the crucifixion of Jesus. Our Savior dies on the cross, offering himself for the salvation of humanity. Memory Aid: Timeline. Once The Third Sorrowful Mystery, the crowning with thorns, is placed in our minds in the correct time sequence, all the others fall in line where they belong. 20

Summary of Memory Aid Timeline 1. Jesus prays first before his ordeal. 2. Jesus is whipped. 3. The crowning with thorns. 4. The carrying of the cross is logically followed by the 5. The crucifixion. 21

THE GLORIOUS MYSTERIES The First Glorious Mystery is the Resurrection. The Rosary ends in glory. Jesus arises from the dead. The First Glorious Mystery confirms our faith. For forty days after his Resurrection, Jesus appears in different locations and teaches his disciples. The Second Glorious Mystery is the Ascension. In the Second Glorious Mystery Jesus ascends into heaven. His followers watch as he disappears from sight into a cloud. The Third Glorious Mystery is the Descent of the Holy Spirit. Forty days after Jesus arose into heaven, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven upon the followers of Jesus when they were gathered together. It came upon them with a loud rushing noise like a mighty wind. The Holy Spirit appeared to them like tongues of fire above their heads rather than like a dove. But because the dove is the symbol of the Holy Spirit, it is also included in the picture above the tree labeled Glorious. The Fourth Glorious Mystery is the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. Mother Mary is taken up into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Heaven welcomed her, body and soul, into eternal joy. The Virgin most Blessed who is filled with grace watches over us as a Mother cares for her children. All we have to do is ask her for help and she will pray for us. The Fifth Glorious Mystery is the Crowning of Mary Queen of Heaven and Earth. Saints and Angels sing in Mary s honor. Her beauty reflects God s creation perfected. Memory Aid: Timeline. Obviously the Resurrection of Jesus comes first, the Ascension comes next. Common sense keeps our minds on track. The same is true for Mary. Her 22

Assumption into heaven must occur before her being crowned Queen in heaven. The Third Mystery which is pictured with the dove and the tongues of fire separates the events of Jesus life from Mary s life. The Glorious Mysteries all fall into place. I wonder how many Catholics today actually pray the Rosary daily as our Blessed Mother urged. I wonder how many Catholics today even know how to pray the Rosary. How good it would be if every person who knows how to pray the Rosary would teach at least one other person the Rosary! How good it is when two or three people pray together! How good it is when their prayers include the Rosary! 23

PREPARE BY PROMOTING THE SCAPULAR The Scapular as well as the Rosary will be our refuge during the Tribulation. The brown Scapular symbolizes work dedicated to furthering Christ s kingdom on earth. That work is upheld by prayer. We will need to pray for guidance before working for God. It is enough for us to sit humbly under the wing of the Holy Spirit with our hearts beating in harmony as we pray the Rosary. Linked together with the right intentions, all will be blessed as we labor to preserve the earth. (We must never forget that our Blessed Mother is Queen of the earth.) Those who do not have a brown Scapular can put on the brown work apron in spirit. Yet as soon as possible, and if at all possible, full size Scapulars need to be acquired and worn. The Blessed Mother gave us the Scapular for a reason: to attract willing workers into her projects. See the website Rosary of the Great Coming for more information on the Scapular. Booklet 5 entitled 2012 And Ahead has a design for the full size work apron for men, women and children. This design will probably need to be modified around the shoulder and neck and in addition on the placement of a side strap. Promoting the full size Scapular means that skilled persons will need to design and sew them. The Scapular design will likely change over time depending on the climate, culture, and conditions where it is worn. It should, at least, always be brown in color and designed to permit modesty. 24

ABOUT THE ROSARY What Is the Rosary? The Rosary is a form of reflective prayer based on the mysteries of our redemption. Its purpose is to deepen our prayer lives and to lead us into a profound encounter with the central truths of the Christian faith. The Rosary is composed of four meditations focused on events in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. These events are found in the Bible. The four meditations are: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious. The Rosary includes teachings of the Church regarding Mary, the mother of Jesus, and events in her life, too. Isn t reciting so many prayers vain repetition? Even one insincere prayer can be in vain. Some things bear repeating. Pray without ceasing the apostle Paul instructs in I Thes. 5:17. The repetition dissolves into contemplation as one progresses along the spiritual journey. The quantity of prayer does not matter but the depth. Silence Since stillness helps to nourish contemplation of the mysteries, praying the Rosary in silence can bring many blessings. When prayed faithfully, the Rosary may grow more and more into a love song for God. A decade a day Ten beads are called a decade. Usually the time for at least a decade a day can be found. That is only a few minutes a day for God who has given us life and all that is good. Why beads? Beads make it possible to keep one s place and to keep centered. The heart of the Rosary is the circlet of 54 beads, ten Hail Marys times five, and four Our Father beads. The circle begins and ends with praises to the Holy Trinity with the Glory Be prayers.

The Apostles Creed Prayers for the Rosary I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified; died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name: Thy kingdom come: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread: and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation: but deliver us from evil. Amen Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory Be Prayer Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen Jesus Prayer (optional) O my Jesus, forgive us. Deliver us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.
