(61 m) of onditioned thred (Bsis, p. 13), tth stop ed (Bsis), leving 6-in. (15 m) til. Pik up ylinder eds of single olor, nd work 12 rows of flt even-ount peyote stith (Bsis). The ompleted peyote strip should e 12 ylinders wide, with six ylinders on eh stright edge. [2] Zip up (Bsis) the ends of the strip to form tue. Remove the stop ed, nd end the threds (Bsis). [3] Repet steps 1 nd 2 to mke totl of 30 peyote tues, three in eh of 10 olors. Set one side to use s the toggle r. To djust the length of the relet, mke more or fewer tues s needed. When lined up side y side, the tues should e pproximtely 1 2 in. (1.3 m) short of the desired relet length. Assemly [1] Align the tues s desired. [2] On 3 yd. (2.7 m) of thred, pik up two tues (figure 1, ), leving 12-in. (30 m) til. Working in ldder stith (Bsis), sew through oth tues gin ( ). [3] Continue joining the tues with ldder stith ( d), nd exit the lst tue. [4] To mke the deortive edge, pik up three 80 seed eds, nd sew through the next tue. Repet, dding 80s on lternte edges until you reh the other end of the relet (photo ). Tie the working thred to the til t the eginning of the relet with squre knot (Bsis). [5] To tth the toggle r, use the working thred, nd retre the thred pth k through the 80s nd tues to the other end of the relet. [6] Zigzg through the ylinders in the end tue to exit the seventh ylinder from one edge (figure 2, point ). Pik up ylinder, nd sew through the sixth ylinder in the tue ( ). Pik up ylinder, nd sew through the first ylinder dded in this step ( ). Continue working in flt peyote stith until the toggle strp is t lest five ylinders long ( d). [7] Sew through the sixth ylinder from one edge of the toggle r, the remining end ed of the strp, the next ed in the toggle r, nd the first ed you sewed through on the toggle r (d e nd photo ). Retre the thred pth few times, nd end the working thred. [8] Thred needle on the til, nd zigzg through the lst tue to exit t figure 3, point. Pik up 19 to 21 ylinders, nd sew through the middle two ylinders gin to rete loop ( ). Working with three olors of 110 ylinder eds, I strt t the top of the hrted pttern nd work down, then I repet the pttern, skipping the first three rows. After stithing the relet to the desired length, I finish it with two rows of rem-olored eds to mirror the strt of the relet. You my wnt to emellish the edges with 150 seed eds nd 110 ylinder eds nd use 5 16-in. [4] Work two rounds of tuulr peyote stith (Bsis) using ylinders, nd step up through the first ylinder dded in eh round. [5] Work round of peyote using 150 seed eds, keeping firm tension so tht this round is snug ginst the top edge of the ue. [6] Remove the stop ed, nd, using the til, repet steps 4 nd 5 to omplete the ezel. Sew through the edwork to exit orner ylinder in the enter round, tying few hlf-hith knots (Bsis) s you go. Repet with the working thred, exiting n opposite orner. Do not trim the threds. [7] Repet steps 1 6 for totl of 24 ues, 12 of eh olor. Nekle [1] Using thred on one ue, pik up 150, ylinder, 4 mm perl, ylinder, nd 150. Sew through the orresponding orner ed in ue of ontrsting olor. Pik up 150 nd ylinder, nd sew k through the 4 mm. Pik up ylinder nd 150, nd sew through the orner ylinder your thred exited t the strt of this step (figure 4). Retre the thred pth, nd end the thred (Bsis). EDITOR S NOTES: Mke mthing 7-in. (18 m) relet using six 8 mm ues. Use 4 mm ione rystls in ple of the perls for even more sprkle. [2] Repet step 1 to onnet the remining ues, lternting olors. Do not end the thred on the end ues. Work six short rows on eh side to form the opening, then egin the finl five full rows, piking up 12 eds over the opening. (1.8 m) of Fireline, pik up six 3 mm ue eds, leving 12-in. (30 m) til. Working in flt evenount peyote stith (Bsis, p. 13), mke nd 123 rows long, with 62 ues on eh stright edge. End nd dd thred (Bsis) s needed. [2] Work derese turn: Sew under the thred ridge etween the lst two ues long n edge, then sew k through the two ues on the end (figure 1, ). Work two stithes ( ). Work derese turn ( d), nd work one stith (d e). End the thred. [3] Using the til, stith the mle end of the snp to the top surfe of the se (photo ), nd end the thred. [4] Add 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline in the edwork t the derese end, nd exit the first ue in n edge row, with the needle pointing towrd the edwork. Pik up two 110 hex-ut seed eds, nd sew through the next ue (figure 2, ). Pik up two hex-uts, sew through the next two ues, then sew through the next edge ed ( ). [5] Repet the ed pttern from step 4 ( d) until you hve ompleted 10 rows of hex-ut emellishment. Zigzg through the next three edge ues to position the needle to egin the next set of 10 rows of hex-ut emellishments. Repet for totl of seven sets. End the thred. [6] Add 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline t the derese end. Stith the other end of the snp to the ottom surfe of the se, entered under the first set of hex-ut emellishments. [7] Exit the first two hex-ut eds dded in step 4. Pik up 3 mm perl, nd sew through the next two hexut eds. Pik up perl nd 150 seed ed, nd sew through two ues on the edge nd the first two hexut eds in the next row (figure 3). Repet to dd the perl emellishment to the 10 rows of hex-ut eds. Sew through the ues to exit the first pir of hex-ut eds in the next set of 10 rows, nd repet the perl emellishment. Repet for eh set, nd end the thred. [8] Add 2 yd. (1.8 m) of Fireline in the edwork, exiting n edge ue t the derese end. Pik up 150, perl, nd 150. Sew under the thred ridge etween the first two ues nd k through the lst 150 (figure 4, ). THREAD AND KNOTS Conditioning thred Use eeswx or mirorystlline wx (not ndle wx or prffin) or Thred Heven to ondition nylon eding thred nd Fireline. Wx smooths nylon fiers nd dds tkiness tht will stiffen your edwork slightly. Thred Heven dds stti hrge tht uses the thred to repel itself, so don t use it with douled thred. Both onditioners help thred resist wer. To ondition, streth nylon thred to remove the url (you don t need to streth Fireline). Ly the thred or Fireline on top of the onditioner, hold it in ple with your thum or finger, nd pull the thred through the onditioner. Hlf-hith knot Pss the needle under the thred ridge etween two eds, nd pull gently until loop forms. Cross k over the thred etween the eds, sew through the loop, nd pull gently to drw the knot into the edwork. Adding thred To dd thred, sew into the edwork severl rows or rounds prior to the point where the lst ed ws dded, leving short til. Follow the thred pth of the stith, tying few hlf-hith knots (see Hlf-hith knot ) etween eds s you go, nd exit where the lst stith ended. Trim the short til. Ending thred To end thred, sew k through the lst few rows or rounds of edwork, following the thred pth of the stith nd tying two or three hlf-hith knots (see Hlf-hith knot ) etween eds s you go. Sew through few eds fter the lst knot, nd trim the thred. Squre knot [1] Cross one end of the thred over nd under the other end. Pull oth ends to tighten the first hlf of the knot. [2] Cross the first end of the thred over nd under the other end. Pull oth ends to tighten the knot. Stop ed Use stop ed to seure eds temporrily when you egin stithing. Choose ed tht is different from the eds in your projet. Pik up the stop ed, leving the desired length til. Sew through the stop ed gin in the sme diretion, mking sure you don t split the thred. These eds will shift to form the first two rows s the third row is dded. d e [2] To egin row 3, pik up ed, skip the lst ed dded in the previous step, nd sew k through the next ed, working towrd the til ( ). For eh stith, pik up ed, skip ed in the previous row, nd sew through the next ed until you reh the first ed piked up in step 1 ( d). The eds dded in this row re higher thn the previous rows nd re referred to s up-eds. [3] For eh stith in susequent rows, pik up ed, nd sew through the next up-ed in the previous row (d e). To ount peyote stith rows, ount the totl numer of eds long oth stright edges. Flt odd-ount Odd-ount peyote is the sme s evenount peyote, exept for the turn on odd-numered rows, where the lst ed of the row n t e tthed in the usul wy euse there is no up-ed to sew through. Work the trditionl odd-row turn s follows: [1] Begin s for flt even-ount peyote, ut pik up n odd numer of eds. Work row 3 s in even-ount, stopping efore dding the lst ed. [2] Work figure-8 turn t the end of row 3: Sew through the first ed piked up in step 1 (ed #1). Pik up the lst ed of the row you re working on (ed #8), nd sew through eds #2, #3, #7, #2, #1, nd #8. You n work this turn t the end of eh odd-numered row, ut this edge will e stiffer thn the other [3] In susequent oddnumered rows, pik up the lst ed of the row, sew under the thred ridge etween the lst two edge eds, nd sew k through the lst ed dded to egin the next row. Zipping up or joining To join two setions of flt peyote piee invisily, mth up the two piees so the end rows fit together. Zip up the piees y zigzgging through the up-eds on oth ends. Tuulr Tuulr peyote stith follows the sme stithing pttern s flt peyote, ut insted of sewing k nd forth, you work in rounds. [1] Strt with n even numer of eds tied into ring (see Squre knot ). [2] Sew through the first ed in the ring. Pik up ed, skip ed in the ring, nd sew through the next ed. Repet to omplete the round. [3] To step up to strt the next round, sew through the first ed dded in round 3 ( ). Pik up ed, nd sew through the next ed in round 3 ( ). Repet to hieve the desired length, stepping up fter eh round. Ldder stith Trditionl method [1] Pik up two eds, nd sew through them oth gin, positioning the eds side y side Round 2 Knot Round 4 Round 3 Round 1 so tht their holes re prllel ( ). [2] Add susequent eds y piking up one ed, sewing through the previous ed, then sewing through the new ed ( ). Continue for the desired length. This tehnique produes uneven tension, whih you n orret y zigzgging k through the eds in the opposite diretion or y hoosing the Crossweve method or Alterntive method elow. Crossweve method [1] Thred needle on eh end of length of thred, nd enter ed. [2] Working in rossweve tehnique, pik up ed with one needle, nd ross the other needle through it ( nd ). Add ll susequent eds in the sme mnner. Alterntive method [1] Pik up ll the eds you need to reh the length your projet requires. Fold the lst two eds so they re prllel, nd sew through the seond-to-lst ed gin in the sme diretion ( ). [2] Fold the next loose ed so it sits prllel to the previous ed in the ldder, nd sew through the loose ed in the sme diretion ( ).
