Fulliam Ave. Muscatine, IA SHOW & SALE INFORMATION: DON GILL & PATTI BOURGEOIS PO Box 834 Westport, MA The 2019 American Art Pottery Association Annual Convention will commence Wednesday, May 1st and continue through Sunday, May 5th, This year we are joining the Washington DC Art Deco Society Modernism Show and The DC Big Flea Antique Market at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, Virginia. Ticket admission will allow our members and customers to view all three shows. Let s not forget they will be shopping us too! All 7,000 of them. We have some educational seminars on tap and two wonderful tours planned, read about them in this packet. Our host hotel, the Holiday Inn, is conveniently located next to the Expo center. This is a busy weekend in Chantilly, be sure to book your rooms early. Registration forms can be downloaded at our website ( info/convention) and mailed to Marie Latta, 2115 W. You are invited to see old friends and meet new members. There will be lots of food and fun! Bring some cash too!!! Our newly formatted auction will be held during our Meet & Greet. We are going to have a small 50 lot auction of donated pots as part of our reception. Please consider donating some pottery. HOST HOTEL: Holiday Inn Chantilly-Dulles Expo, 4335 Chantilly Shopping Center, Chantilly, Virginia Please contact the hotel at or to make your reservation. Make sure you tell them you are coming in for the American Art Pottery Association convention. Total rooms booked will help offset the convention costs, so please utilize our host hotel during your stay. Good news no reserves, no buyer s premium, no shipping and no internet competition. Bring lots of money and a fun-loving attitude. Let s make this event a BIG success. 3
4 Tour Wednesday, May 1st 8 AM to 5 PM THURSDAY BANQUET Our Banquet this year will be held in the Prairie Ballroom in the host hotel. Our banquet begins at 6:30 PM and will include your choice of one of entree. This is a must-do event! Following dinner will be a brief our Annual Meeting. This year s day long tour will escort participants to see some of Washington s most prized ceramic holdings. We ll start the day at the National Museum of American History for a private showing of some of the Smithsonian s most important holdings, including significant works by Ohr, Robineau, Rookwood and many others. Next, we ll cross the National Mall (stopping for pics of the Capitol and Washington Monument!) to visit the Freer, whose founder was an important early supporter of Pewabic and whose museum has important Pewabic holdings. While at the Freer, we ll also view the remarkable Peacock Room, beautifully designed by James Abbot McNeill Whistler to display Asian ceramics. Following lunch and another stop in DC, we ll head over to Alexandria, Virginia to visit the Torpedo Factory, where we ll watch and learn from some of the region s most important contemporary ceramic artists. Join us! Bring some cash as items are for sale. This tour will be limited to 65 so get your reservations in early. Our bus will have us back at the hotel by 5 PM where you will have time to rest and get a quick bite of dinner. A Welcome Meet & Greet for convention attendees will be held at 6:30 PM. A time to catch up with old friends and meet new members. And, don t forget our auction! Art Pottery Show & Sale Dulles Expo Center North Hall 4320 Chantilly Shopping Center, Chantilly, VA Convention Registered Members This year s AAPA Show and Sale, featuring many of the country s premier vintage and contemporary pottery dealers, will be held in the Dulles Expo Center - North Hall. Early admission to the show will be from 6 PM to 8 PM Friday, May 3rd for convention registered members. Open to the Public The AAPA Show and Sale will be open to the public on Saturday, May 4th from 9 AM to 6 PM and Sunday, May 5th from 11 AM to 5 PM. Show admission for non-registered AAPA members is $10 and provides admission to all three events Saturday and Sunday.
5 Seminars Seminar locations will be posted at the Registration table. THURSDAY, MAY 2nd, 9:00 10:30 AM The Art Pottery of Jerry Marek and the American Art Clay Company (AMACO) The American Art Clay Company of Indianapolis is celebrating their centennial during This presentation will highlight the collectible art deco ceramics created by AMACO between 1931 and The talk will feature images of both more common pieces and rarities, along with tips obtained from various longtime collectors. Images from the AMACO factory archives and from the family of their chief art pottery designer, Jerry Marek, will also be shared with attendees. Keep your fingers crossed--and the session will end with a tour of the small pottery Marek operated for a few years after leaving AMACO. Mark Bassett is a collector and researcher with a special interest in American art pottery of the 1920s and 1930s. He is the author of several books on Roseville Pottery and also of Cowan Pottery and the Cleveland School (co-authored with Victoria Naumann Smoot). Since 2010 he has taught full time at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he is presently working with art historian Henry Adams on a history of the school. His courses include first-year writing and American Crafts History. THURSDAY, MAY 2nd, 11:00 12:00 AM North Carolina Pottery - A Journey from Utility to Artistry This will be a discussion of the transition of North Carolina potters from manufacture of utilitarian ware to art and tourist pottery. It will trace the progress of the great pottery families of NC, and provide examples of the wares they produced and their identification. Darrel Styles, DVM, PhD is veterinary microbiologist employed by the United States Department of Agriculture. Darrel was born and raised in western North Carolina where he was first exposed to southern stoneware and art/ tourist pottery. Darrel is an avid arts & crafts ware collector including furniture, glassware, metalware, and handthrown North Carolina and Kentucky art pottery made prior to 1960; Fulper pottery; Pierrefonds pottery; and life would simply not be complete without Burley-Winter pottery. FRIDAY, MAY 3rd, 9:00 10:00 AM Rose Cabat and Edwin Scheier Two Twentieth Century Potters By chance I collected two of the great potters of the 20th Century. Rose I knew very well and Ed I met when visiting my friend Rose. How this came about, the story of my connection, as well as information about these two great icons of American 20th Century Art Pottery will be shared and discussed. Bruce Block is the owner of the Antique Underground in Syracuse New York and creator of City Market Syracuse an Antique and Art Cooperative Market with the Everson Museum of Art. He grew up in New York City and thought he was suppose to wind up in Paris. A lack of sense of direction brought him to Syracuse. Who knew??? Tour Thursday, May 2nd 1 PM to 3 PM In the works, an optional Thursday tour which will take us on a tour of the Smithsonian s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, part of the Air and Space Museum and just a short drive from the conference hotel. There, we ll participate in a specially curated tour by Dr. Tom Crouch, exploring the role of ceramics in aeronautics and visiting some of the museum s highlights. Science and space nerds won t want to miss this tour! This tour will be limited to 28 so get your reservations in early. 5
