We bring together organizations that work with and care for animals to end animal cruelty, improve animal protection and promote the humane treatment of all animals. Since we were founded in 1957, we ve earned our solid reputation and enviable credibility as the go-to national voice on animal welfare issues for industry, media, government, non-governmental organizations and the public. We work collaboratively and cooperatively with key stakeholders from across Canada, based on the premise that we can have a greater impact creating positive change by being a part of the process instead of being apart from it. About the Conference The National Animal Welfare Conference is an annual professional development and communitybuilding event for Canada s animal welfare sector. This two-day conference includes presentations, workshops, keynote addresses, panel discussions and a day-long training intensive on new animal welfare initiatives, emerging animal welfare science, best practices in animal sheltering, leadership practices in an animal welfare context, making the link between animal cruelty and other crimes, advocacy and stakeholder relations techniques and animal welfare community engagement. As part of each annual conference, Humane Canada honours those who have made significant contributions to the Canadian animal welfare sector with the Animal Welfare Leadership & Innovation Awards. The 2019 National Animal Welfare Conference will take place in beautiful Montreal at the Hotel Bonaventure Montreal, and it marks our sixth year! It promises to be our largest attendance to date with more than 400 attendees! Why Should You Speak at the Conference? 2 Themes for Conference Sessions Humane Canada's National Animal Welfare Conference is the premier professional development event for the Canadian animal welfare sector, and our program committee needs your expertise and ideas! The committee is looking specifically for a focus on recent programs, projects, interventions or research and encourages submissions that explore innovative and creative responses to animal welfare issues. In order to provide a comprehensive learning experience for the conference participants, the committee is interested in both successful and unsuccessful initiatives. We re currently accepting abstracts on the following topics for our 2019 conference: Animal Sheltering: Emerging shifts and trends in animal shelter management, such as dog assessments; capacity for care (cats, dogs and small animals); reducing length of stay; shelter design (including environmentally-friendly sheltering and other sustainability initiatives); feral cat assessment tools; implementing the Association of Shelter Veterinarians guidelines challenges and successes; in-shelter behaviour modification programs; shelter management and shelter data software, etc. Protecting Vulnerable Animals: Community cat strategies and programs (for example, with animal control, rescue groups, conservation groups, veterinarians, etc.); shelter medicine and community outreach initiatives; public awareness programs; working with animal rescues and smaller shelters; One Welfare programs and initiatives supporting vulnerable populations and their animals (examples: homeless and low-income populations, elderly, women in transition, hoarders, mental health situations). Advocacy and Education: Best practices or case studies on delivering innovative humane education programs, advocacy campaigns and social media programming. Examples: behaviour education services to help keep animals in homes; stakeholder engagement, government relations; advocacy work; mobilizing younger audiences; and education initiatives leading to public behavioural change. Animal Ethics: Moral and ethical approaches to animal use and protection: underlying ideas or values regarding human/animal relationships that drive organizations, individuals and the public to act on key animal welfare issues. Examples: moving beyond the animal welfare vs. rights debates in animal protection, ethical issues facing animal shelters employees and volunteers; policies related to animal use in certain industries; ethical debates on animal welfare issues (research and philosophies). Communications and Fund Development: Emerging trends in our sector; managing and attracting media attention; case studies of public awareness campaigns, innovation in brand management; project management approaches; best practices in media or social media engagement; new tools or technologies; and strategies for achieving a greater share of voice. Emerging trends and innovative approaches to building funding capacity in the animal welfare sector, including donor stewardship, foundation funding, social enterprise and corporate partnerships. Leadership and Organizational Strength: Best practices in human resources (examples: compassion fatigue, managing work/life balance, staff and volunteer engagement); training initiatives; internal standards and policy consistency; governance and board development; and innovative technologies. The program committee will also consider any other important animal welfare topics that are relevant to the Canadian context but not mentioned above. Some topics may include trends in animal welfare and behaviour science; wildlife welfare; use of animals in research and education; legislative campaigns; animal cruelty and protection; farm animal welfare issues; and topics related to First Nations. The committee welcomes submissions for 15, 45 or 90-minute presentations in the following formats: -Lightning Presentations (Knowledge Pods) - 15-minute presentations focused on quick takeaways -Presentation (with 1-3 speakers) -Panel discussions -Workshops Sessions must include a 10-minute question period (except for knowledge pod sessions) and can be delivered using PowerPoint or as an interactive, hands-on workshop.

3 Languages At our 2019 conference, some sessions will be presented in French with simultaneous whisper translation into English. All plenary sessions will be translated from English to French. Please indicate your language of presentation below and submit your abstract and bio in this language. The deadline for submitting an abstract for consideration is Monday, October 1, Decisions Abstracts will be reviewed by the conference program committee, and we will contact you with the committee's decisions between October 24-31, Compensation If your abstract is chosen, each speaker for your session will receive a complimentary conference pass on the day they are presenting and offered a special speaker rate to register for all other days/events. GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION STEP 1 Read Humane Canada's 2019 National Animal Welfare Conference call for abstracts and submission guidelines. STEP 2 Complete the digital abstract submission form. Ensure you have installed the most recent version of Adobe Reader (available free online) to your computer. You will be asked to fill in personal information, answer questions and agree to conditions. You can save your work and return to it later. STEP 3 Once all sections are complete, save the form, attach it to an and send it to conference@humanecanada.ca. You will receive confirmation that we received the form within 2-5 business days. Please note that, if you need to make changes to your abstract after you have submitted, you can contact us at conference@humanecanada.ca. ABSTRACT SUBMISSION TERMS Humane Canada reserves the right to edit abstracts to be in line with our required formatting, as well as for style, grammar, punctuation and capitalization errors. By submitting an abstract, you confirm that the proposed presentation is original content and that you have obtained any necessary permission (i.e.: client approval, copyright permissions) to present the material at our conference. In addition, you agree to the following: 1. Humane Canada will circulate the abstract for review to the 2019 National Animal Welfare Conference planning committee. If your abstract is selected, the abstract and any other materials submitted to us that are relevant to the presentation will be used to populate the conference app and website. In addition, the presentation files you provide will be made available on our website (unless you specify otherwise). 2. If the proposed presentation is accepted, Humane Canada will: o o Include information such as title and speaker name(s) in the preliminary and final program materials. Reproduce the abstract in printed and/or digital documents. You will have an opportunity to submit an 3. updated abstract before the conference begins. Humane Canada may contact you and any other authors appearing in the abstract with information about the 2019 National Animal Welfare Conference. If you are able to, please provide your abstract and bio in both English and French, as not all committee members are bilingual. This is not a requirement but is preferred.
