6 UC Berkeley s OE Model: Pros & Cons Pros: Stable major field only if faculty continues to excel in a research environment. Broad-based collaboration possibilities. Great consultants do not count. Excellent exposure in a big department, outreach by teaching service courses. Class size increases even in specialty courses. Cons: Head-on competition with other hot fields. Quota: ONLY 5~6 admits out of 70 applicants. If OE does well, rest of big department would envy and try to skim from OE. If OE does not do well, then it will fade away in competition with nano-technology, thermal energy, biomechanical system, control & robotics Question?: How to protect, embrace, and expand this specialty in a first-rate research university?
