13 What is Disruptive Innovation? It disrupts the bigger and better cycle by bringing to market a service that is not as good as the best traditional offerings but is more affordable and easier to use It is initially a boon to non consumers of a service. Traditional providers ignore it, assuming that their current clientele won t be interested But, as the service improves via the offering of additional features, it becomes a threat to traditional providers Hence, as the advantages such as cost and ease of use of the service are further developed and identified, it, or what is known as the disruptive innovation, becomes attractive to traditional users

15 What is the Threat?TheOpportunity? Traditional rural schools and communities perform the critical, unique functions of educating students and offering services to community members However, because of accelerated change, they face convention and imitation which calls for their re examination and, perhaps, a re setting of these functions If, together, they cannot find innovative, less costly ways of performing their uniquely valuable function(s), unfortunately they re doomed to decline The bottom line? To avoid being disrupted, rural schools and communities must collectively and continuously develop strategies that transcend imitation and develop a culture of innovation thereby making themselves the disruptors
