2 Field Extension and Preservation, Backward Compatibility The challenges: There is a large installed base of s worldwide Expected life of field is upwards of 25 years Operators may wish to extend their fields and may require more instrumentation with more data Operators may also wish to extend their fields life. The constraints: In electronics, what was new fewer than 5 years ago, is often obsolete today Therefore, it is difficult to maintain the old and provide new equipment compatible with the old Old infrastructure does not support high speeds. 7 Terminal Server Operators can be wary of multiplexed communications on the production communications lines (Multiplexed = superimposition of higher carrier frequencies on the umbilical cores which carry the slower existing legacy communication signals) Fear of interfering with existing system/production Extensive analysis and testing would be needed to sell the client a technology that is viable. Co-existence by multiplexing is tempting The new is pseudo independent from the old But there are risks of consequential interference? SDU And there are limitations imposed by the umbilical e.g. for a legacy 1.2 kbaud system, superimposing a new ~40 kbaud system is achievable, Field extension but for a legacy 9.6 kbaud system practically nothing. 05 February 2018 Slide 7

14 Terminal Server Overview Utilizes standard low power serial board (field proven) with Modified Software. Topside to subsea communication either DSP electrical communication (OFDM) or through optical fibres. Communication to subsea legacy device via Serial FSK modems. Hardware can be installed within a subsea pod, MCM, SRM or can be a separately retrievable sea washed canister. 05 February 2018 Slide 14

16 Example 1: BP Quad 204 Background aging Schiehallion field ~30 wells with 3rd gen. SEMs 1.2 kbaud FSK comms. Client requirements: Extend field life ~20 additional well sets New FPSO with new New umbilical and new distribution But Keep existing subsea infrastructure, i.e. not recovering XMTs/s. The solution implemented: New communicating DSP OFDM Terminal Server at the subsea SDM communicating FSK to the legacy SEMs. For new wells, there is a choice: Quad 204, FSK communication Future wells, we have more options. 17 Example 2: UK North Sea (Company A ) Client requirements: Additional backward compatible well-sets No enhanced speed required. By analysis, however, Aker Solutions knows that doing so would imbalance the communication system Such system with additional backward compatible SEMs would not work. Aker Solutions are thus offering a Terminal Server solution: The terminal server in this case is performing the function of a repeater/multiplexer Plus, it reconstitutes and retransmit the signals Hence, achieving a viable solution without reflections and distortions. 18 Example 3: UK North Sea (Company B ) Client requirements: New umbilical, length exceeding comms. capability Existing communication speed is 9.6 kbaud, FSK EFLs from subsea distribution to wells, kms long Client s existing stock of Aker icon SEMs, to be used (a good recycling / environmentally friendly requirement). Aker Solutions analysis, however, shows that regardless of new, umbilical and distribution, the required distances exceed the range of the existing legacy equipment. Therefore, the solution is: The new to communicate DSP OFDM New umbilical (copper communication) Terminal Server subsea, communicating: DSP OFDM with the FSK at 9.6 kbaud to the SEMs. 05 February 2018 Slide 18

19 Extending the Life of the UKCS In a mature basin, the viability of legacy control systems is always at question. None of Aker Solutions global installed base dating from the 1980s are obsolete! Demonstrated through projects such as BP Quad 204, the Aker Solutions Subsea Terminal Server : offers upgrade of communication speeds through existing umbilicals allows adding modern, data intensive instrumentation facilitates backward compatible tie-in of legacy control modules. Our experience and learning is taken to the broader market, to support life of field extension in the UKCS, regardless of the generation of subsea equipment. Furthermore, for the local market, significant investment in the refurbishment and expansion of the service facility in Aberdeen reaffirms Aker Solutions commitment to provide the best possible service and upgrade of capability. 05 February 2018 Slide 19
